After all, in real life, nobody is going to sit and compare your travel photos taken with the Google Pixel 2 or the iPhone 8. The best camera is the one we have with us, and more often than not, the most important element of the camera is the one who's pressing the shutter.

Mr. Brownlee provided the answer: an algorithm. He also reviewed the basic scoring system and chided tech writers for not doing same. He advised us to look for the scores of the variables that matter most to each reader/photographer. He also informed us that DXO does consulting work. I knew this already - don't know whether I read it on DXO's website, or in an article about sensors or something like that - and I don't think it reflects poorly on those involved. Be it education, industry, professional associations and so on: benchmarks, standards, testing all exist for good reason. Thanks.
You are correct, but if you know something about cameras then you would know that portraits are taken at a higher focal length, thus the Note 8 which has the same Bokeh rating will produce a better image than the Pixel because it has a camera with a higher focal length with the same Bokeh.

That happens because "everyone" can be a Tech reviewer nowadays. They think is just read the technical sheet, use the device for 1 week and they're done. For example: I couldn't find one single youtube video saying that you have to plug the MacBooks on the power and connect a mouse\trackpad\keyboard to keep it away from sleeping while with the screen closed.
I'm a sociologist and i found your video kinda awesome in an epistemology and methodology way. I make a lot of researchs in different areas and also work as a consultant for financial entities. Sometimes we have to weight the results in order to achieve a) the measures the universe is "suppose" to have or b) to put priority on what is important for the client. As a sociologist i know that measures are always artificial and imperfect but if it is done rigoruosly, and that's the key word, it can help to achieve the objective (not perfect or universal but helpful). We have to understand that we, as humans, can't measure things in a pure objective way, there are always a lot of variables that aren't included in the researchs and the tools we use to measure are relative to our perception. So always grab investigations, researchs or reviews with a grain of salt, or better try to understand how the research was done.

Dxo scores aren’t out of something greater than 100, their a score based on how good the camera is. If a camera was good enough it could get a score of a million.

The average user gets easily fooled by what you call it "media" and sort of reviews that trigger only a certain point of a product. Good solid reporting! I think the problems with DxO procedures go even deeper. Take for example the bokeh test which sets the camera in a fixed distance from the front object and the front object from the background object. Well, that’s useful if every photo you take uses those distances but more than likely NO photo you take will have those exact relationship distances. It would not be a valid conclusion to think DxO’s bokeh test will tell you anything about a photo you make if it has different and likely very different distances. I loved the fact that they have a viewing panel of experts who view “real world” photos and then judge which camera was most accurate. Even 5 experts will disagree about this sort of thing, you only need to look at a camera forum or a high end hifi forum to see how differently people react to the same images. I could go on and on. The attempt to be “scientific” means DxO has to standardise conditions, temperature, light source colour, locked on a tripod, etc which means if you replicate the situation then you should get repeatable results. But real world shooting means NO conditions are standardised. In fact most high end smartphone cameras can make better photos than the people doing the shooting. It’s false to think anyone can find “the best” camera. Now go download CIPA’s white paper on Image Stabilisation tests for another eye opener of meaningless stats.

He explains things in such a good manner, which is easily digestible by non-techies, yet palatable for the geeks. It's probably the best review website for smartphone cameras available on the Internet right now, but people are misusing a whoooole lot. Thanks for the explainer Marques, you are right on the money. You basically cannot have a single score that is completely representative of camera quality because not only there's a whole ton of variables and a whole ton of photography needs, you also end up with some pretty subjective stuff mixed in between. For instance, some people might find a color profile that is completely uncalibrated over a perfect calibration. Ever wonder why people use filters so much? There's a miriad of factors that work just like that. Even a broke down score sheet with several different judging factors is leaving out a whole lot of stuff that matters. And even outside all that, people should know that you can get some pretty awesome smartphone cameras in smartphone that will give you a pretty bad experience in everything else. This isn't happening so much these days since features have plateaued quite a bit, but I do remember hybrid smartphones of the past that tried to make plenty good cameras, but ended up with a smartphone that was really annoying to use and carry around. Finally, let me add just one bit about CZcams reviews in general... people should know that what you see on CZcams regarding videos and photos from cameras might not be good enough for reviews. Simply put, CZcams compression has a major influence over it. Not saying it shouldn't be done, not saying they aren't helpful, but much like review websites caveats, it's something to know about so you don't completely rely on one source or another exclusively and end up with a bad device as result.

It's probably the best review website for smartphone cameras available on the Internet right now, but people are misusing a whoooole lot.

You basically cannot have a single score that is completely representative of camera quality because not only there's a whole ton of variables and a whole ton of photography needs, you also end up with some pretty subjective stuff mixed in between.
For instance, some people might find a color profile that is completely uncalibrated over a perfect calibration. Ever wonder why people use filters so much? There's a miriad of factors that work just like that. Even a broke down score sheet with several different judging factors is leaving out a whole lot of stuff that matters.
And even outside all that, people should know that you can get some pretty awesome smartphone cameras in smartphone that will give you a pretty bad experience in everything else. This isn't happening so much these days since features have plateaued quite a bit, but I do remember hybrid smartphones of the past that tried to make plenty good cameras, but ended up with a smartphone that was really annoying to use and carry around.
Finally, let me add just one bit about CZcams reviews in general... people should know that what you see on CZcams regarding videos and photos from cameras might not be good enough for reviews. Simply put, CZcams compression has a major influence over it. Not saying it shouldn't be done, not saying they aren't helpful, but much like review websites caveats, it's something to know about so you don't completely rely on one source or another exclusively and end up with a bad device as result.
