appreciate it. there are so many viewpoints on the distinctions between songwriter/composer vs. arranger vs. orchestrator vs. producer
and then all these definitions vary across genres
and then they all vary across history
and then some music has more division of labor while other musicians try to "do it all themselves", further blurring the lines
no matter how you create your music though, I think it helps to have a better understanding of the traditional "flow chart" of music creation within your era and genre!!
    plus relevant historical genres!
    thanks again :)

I am 99% sure your example is not what arranging is. that's what producing is, like a director of a film they make global decisions. But arranging is about using different instrumentation and making choices of which instruments play which notes and when... You can also make solo arrangements but it's the same process of finding creative ways to have the song played.

Nice video! But I just ask what if I write songs (both lyrics and music) and kinda have an idea reagarding the overall outcome. Should I still hire a Producer? Or I should go straight with Arranger and Music Engineer? Thanks

That's entirely up to you and your budget.

That's such an inaccurate description of what an arranger is, let alone what they do. An arranger will create the score, designating which parts are played by particular instruments. They do not change the structure of a composition.

Janice Slater thanks Janice, I would agree with you, it’s not a complete description of what an arranger does. Yes, they do work also with tempos. They notate the songs if necessary. I think the mark of a great arranger is when they can take an idea and “arrange” it into something that flows nicely and has a powerful structure by working with each piece of the song, adding and subtracting instrumentation. They also can help a song-writer decide how long each part of the song should be. They work with harmony, too. Thanks for the comment.

@@Taylorsound I appreciate your response but we are living in a world where young musicians are lacking in basic fundamentals of music. With new technologies, producer , arranger, mixer have a completely different meaning from earlier generations. Even the term publisher isn't always understood. I think it would be invaluable to your audience to intriduce those differences in roles and their possibke meanings. I've never come across an arranger who rewrites a composition. If they did they would or should become a cowriter. I appreciate your courteous response.

Janice Slater no thank you. In the rock and roll world, terms like that are often misunderstood and I think it’s very good to clarify. I don’t claim to know everything. I just try to share what I know and it’s not always a complete picture. Thanks again for your help. Anything to help young folks navigate the world of music business and music creation is a good thing.
