Channapatna is a town situated on the Bangalore Mysore highway in Karnataka. It produces world famous wooden toys and colourful dolls that carry the coveted Geographical Indications (GI) tag. This video is dedicated to the artisans who have been keeping this art alive for decades.

This art of toy making is native to the town of Channapatna and belongs to its hundreds of artisans and families who practice it since centuries.
Then Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan, impressed by a lacquer-coated wooden artifact he received as a gift from Persia in the 18th century, invited Persian artisans to India to train the people in his realm. Now, more than two centuries on, the artisans here, in what has been christened the ‘toy town’, make everything from decorative boxes, pencil stands and miniature musical instruments to chess boards, tableware, jewellery, lamps and vases. And of course toys.
