We just had a case near me in the UK this week where a man murdered not only his partner and her 2 children but also a friend of one of them who was having a sleepover

Born and bred in Australia circa 1958. Some of the most famous murders in Australia from that time are the Beaumont disappearances, assumed murders, and the Wanda Beach murders. In all my life, until today, I had never heard of the Crawford family murders, and given the details, how can I not know of such notorious murders?
Because the police never got close to finding him and publicity dropped away rapidly. There is a book about the case written by a police officer who had been a boy living in the same street at the time.
I think that (coming along a bit later than you) Beaumont and Wanda were stranger danger cases, and your parents may have drawn your attention to them. Mine did.
There was lots of newspaper coverage.I was a kid at the time and always read the papers.I never heard of the above case.
It is interesting how some crimes make ALL the headlines sometimes for months to years & others DON'T.
How sad that this monster was never caught.
What I found weird to this case is how a superfriendly and pretty social and helpfull man can be this evil. I never would have seen it coming. He probably kept it to himself, and all of a sudden (not for him all of a sudde ) killed his complete family. Very very sad and shocking😢

His intent will have been to have the car plunge into the ocean (not burst into flames), thereby delaying the discovery of the murders which he had crafted to appear like the work of a disturbed mother. The history of the location provides further clues as to what he intended and how he would have liked the murders to have been perceived, in my opinion. There is a book about the case written by a police officer who had been a boy living in the same street at the time. The title is Almost Perfect: The True Story of the Crawford Family Murders. The officer now lives in the USA and has changed profession - I would love to see him on Dr. Grande’s channel ♥️

For someone so mechanically inclined, it doesn't make any sense that he neglected to set a small ignition fire in the car before pushing it over the cliff. It is an almost ridiculous oversight. Then again, he was insane. Part of the insanity was how he had little reason to need to do this ghastly crime and that he would risk life in prison for the senseless act.

He wasn't insane. He knew that what he did was wrong and tried to cover his tracks. When that failed, he left for parts somewhat unknown. He had no conscience. Having no conscience by itself is not insanity; he was well aware of the risks of getting caught and managed to evade law enforcement and justice.
@@2manybooks2littletime25 Absolutely. Shouldn't have used the word "insanity" when I meant "sociopath" or "psychopath". There is a difference legally. He is not legally "insane" if he planned and committed the crime, because he knew it was wrong and he had forethought.
@@eucliduschaumeau8813 yes!. It is difficult for most people to distinguish the differences between personality disorders and mental illnesses. I was a practicing medical professional, so I've been educated in those differences. Even so, there are people who walk that fine line between personality disorders and insanity. It's why multiple forensic psychologists/psychiatrists often have differences in their diagnoses of a perpetrator of a violent crime.

It's a mistake to assume the police made a mistake. They may have simply seen an opportunity for some sweet overtime pay just before Christmas. It's in Trumptardistan, aka, Florida. ALSO, Trumptards will most likely see this "mistake" as being "tough on crime".
Why should it have been under surveillance? The car was spotted on the cliff but wasn't retrieved until the following day by which time Crawford had absconded, with not a single clue where he went.

I was a volunteer ( before the institution closed,) at an institution for the
("insane.")
One of the residents had been there for over forty years. She was there because she was thought to be clinically depressed and mentally ill, so she was not released.
At the time, Post Partum Depression was unknown, so she was misdiagnosed and her depression deepened.
Denied her release, her despair led to lasing depression.
How tragic for her, living with a depression that generally lasts only for a comparatively short period.
The fact that the crime went without punishment is crazy.

It's likely he's dead already. Back then it was pretty easy to just make up a new identity for yourself and have no one ever know or question it. Could have had a family under a different name, other wife, kids, even grandkids, etc. Then passed away under his assumed identity and no one ever is the wiser.

Not sure how clever he was. If the cops just simply watched his house, he would've been caught very quickly. It was more police incompetence rather than his intelligence that led to his escape

I would theorize that having botched the attempt at framing his wife and subsequently losing control of his assets he became destitute. The sudden loss of material well being drove him to end his life where his body would never be found.
Interesting that this possibility is almost never raised in this case. It is certainly true of some similar cases.

At around 13:57 you mentioned a “colonial inquest” but I think you might mean “coronial”? The coroner’s office holds an inquiry as to the potential evidence to see if there’s enough to bring charges. Also, the gas (petrol) cans in the car at Loch Ard would possibly have been needed because at the time gas/petrol stations closed ridiculously early and you just couldn’t refuel 24/7 as can be done now. My parents often tell the story of racing to the hospital to have a baby, panicking more about the low fuel level in the tank than the impending birth.
He intended for the car to drop into the depths of the ocean, not explode.
Speaking of Australia, ever heard of the Beaumont Children, the Adelaide Oval disappearance, the Family Murders (these three may be related), and the Somerton Man (totally unrelated; the Isdal Woman in Norway is similar)? edit: and Mr Cruel?
I am so over the Beaumont children. It has been gone over and evaluated by so many detectives, journalists, authors, podcasts and so on.
The Somerton Man and the Isdal woman make me so sad. Okay, the drawing of the woman that was spread looks like a chikd drew it, but the face of the Somerton Man was photographed and still nobody knows him. Nobody ever missed these people? That's terrible.

It takes a lot of preparation to make that happen. He didn't know that. Imagine his chagrin when he saw the car just sitting there.
His intent was to have the car end up in the ocean. He likely did not see that it had only just failed to make it into the water. The point at which he pushed the car over (at night) drops into deep ocean water.

As an Australian true crime nerd I hadn’t heard of this case either. Then again, family annihilators aren’t exactly unheard of. A year or 2 ago up in Queensland a man locked his wife and kids in their car and set it on fire before committing suicide. More commonly a recently separated father will kill his kids to get revenge on the mother. I just read ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ which covers seperate cases of both of these types of murderers.

He did kind of in a Q & A type thing if I recall. I know he is married and I think has three kids, was in an accident that paved his path to the here and now. It explains a little as to why he chose his career in psychology. He likes his cactus plants. Dang, sorry, I binged so many of these until I noticed some things that I didn't like. So, I catch one here and there when they show up.

Sleep deprivation really is a form of torture. My babies woke very frequently for feedings and changings. I didn't get much sleep, and after months of this, I felt I was going crazy. I cried, I was super emotional, even small things felt like more than I could handle. I don't think people truly give enough credit to how much sleep deprivation affects women who are already trying to heal from a major event (birth), and are expected to care for an infant and maintain the house and cooking at the same time. It is insane. There is no village anymore.

Its educative for me when you talk about diagnosing personality disorders, and it's quite shocking that even these extremely dangerous people might not be officially diagnosed with any disorder!
Mental health and the law are not well meshed. Many criminals have mental health problems and many mentally challenged people commit crimes. But the two realms do not intersect in smooth or fluid fashion. This is one of the big problems society faces!

G'day I actually closed the car door when it was loaded up and a tarpaulin covering the back seat. I went to school with James. My big sister went to school with Catherine the eldest daughter. I remember mum coming home from shopping, crying. Saying that police had found the family car over a cliff.

The case disappeared from view quickly. He may have succeeded in escaping the country. Or done as you suggest. There is a book about it called Almost Perfect.
