Fairlead is a maritime term. On a shipboard winch, fairlead means to pull in a straight direction on and off the winch drum, rather than pulling at an angle and creating a bird's nest on the winch drum. A fairlead on a self-recovery winch makes the winch line feed straighter on and off the winch drum, even if the line is at an angle outside the fairlead.
✌️🐸💨
Yep spent years on the oceans of the world. Have videos on my channel that prove so.
I think it's more general than that, you can install a fairlead anywhere on a vessel where you need a line to run "fair". For example, the routing blocks for a genoa furler line could readily be called fairleads.
I WONDERED WHERE THAT CAME FROM , THANK YOU !
37 year Military sailor here. Fair- to bring into perfect alignment. Lead- to guide.
A fairlead is a device to guide a line, rope or cable around an object, out of the way or to stop it from moving laterally. Typically a fairlead will be a ring or hook.
„Fred can’t be Fred without being red“ Rory:“Hold my beer“ (sending „Old Blue“ to get a green paint job.) lol.
From "Blue" to MMS hot green 😂👽🗿👽🤖
Yes!! 😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Maybe the cab interior will stay blue for sentiment
He's sending his truck to paint. I think it should get repainted blue, but swapping a Ford to a Cummins Will take a year in you tube. I'm gonna miss ole blue, but I will be happy to see Rory saving somebody's day in that awesome truck soon.
A 460 engine is a BEAST. Typically enough power to pull a curvy country road straight if you can get hooked up to it right. A little TLC should go a long way with getting that sick engine well!
All the HP and torque in the world is useless if you can’t get the power to the ground. Lockers are a MUST!
@@MrGarfield4 depends on whether you want 1, 2, or 4wheel drive. 😳
Every one I’ve been around is a turd like this one lol. A lot of the big blocks from that time period are pretty weak though. They don’t breathe good with all the emissions parts on them, and often they’re de-tuned from the factory. But this truck is also a wore out work truck, so that engine is probably loose as a goose internally and just needs to be taken out to pasture
@@jesseleesamples I’ve owned two in trucks. Both were box stock, but well maintained. My only complaint about them is fuel consumption. They have a serious fuel economy problem, but the power was very impressive for stock power plants. Sad but true about emissions gear. It has been sucking the life out of engines since around the early 70s. We need to assume that our air quality would be significantly had those systems not been in place, especially because of the massive fuel burn.
@@hgj2019 I’d take a 302 over a 460 tbh, they can make the same power on less fuel lol 460’s are great at turning tons of fuel into noise though
22:44 These scenes remind me SO much of when I was robby's age. My wife didn't usually work away as we had 4 kids, and when they were ready to go do shopping visit grandma or she'd get the kids and herself all fixed up nice, people would say they all looked like a million dollars :)
AND, I was always working on one of our cars, or the van or the flatbed :)
My wife got sick and died many years ago, and the kids are moved away, I hardly ever see them anymore, but it's nice to have all the memories :)
Thank you for sharing
I'm going to turn off CZcams and see if my kids want to go for a walk -- thank you for the reminder that these days are limited, it's too easy to think this is forever
[5 min later... nobody will go for a walk, everyone is on their phone]
I’ve gat a Ford with a 460. Very reliable but yes, not the fastest out of the hole. Heard from an engine builder that Ford purposely slowed the engine by retarding the cam by 6 degrees and put in a weak 1st gear so that it would protect the u-joints and rear end. Fix those things and it would spin the wheels on a dually all day long.
the 460 is a beast. fix the wheel spin traction issues and it will not disappoint after the tune up and other issues
after crimping always solder it, then shrink tube it. add an extra battery
A little work on that 460 and you wouldn't need to swap the motor. Start with the exhaust issues and work your way up. The trans could use some TLC also. You found an interesting way to get the dirt off though. Talk to Rory about your suspension. He could steer you in a good direction for what that truck is going to be asked to do.
A fairlead (or fairleader) is a a really old word form wooden sailing ships, then it's just be a hole or a few holes in a plank.
fair lead beng two words "fair and "lead"
Ropes on ships are often called "leads" and fair is an equally old word that means "pleasing"
So the Fairlead is just "pleasing to the lead" or "easy on the rope"
:)
Part of your power and fuel mileage issues is the exhaust leak. It's feeding oxygen to the o2 sensors and throwing the fuel mapping off.
And the timing. It needs more timing! The emissions standards killed them
Replace the entire exhaust. If there is a Cat, it may be plugged.
He would rather complain about a Ford than fix the obvious.
yeah!! wind the dizzy up a bit till it pings then back it off a bit. she'll bark up then!@@joshuaearnheart2756
@@TheChaztor yes. So he can say how much better an LS is
Like the build so far, do performance upgrades on the 460 before diesel swapping and you need to talk to Rory about a good leaf spring set up front and rear instead of 4 link. Keep it simple good luck cant wait to see it done
Agreed. Keep it simple.
Nah it would be a waste of money and time to upgrade it, before swapping it.
It'll get there. When you buy an older truck, you can't fix one problem, without finding 10 more problems. That paint scheme will look awesome.
Hey robby I don't know of you know this but alot of 460s are detuned by retarting the cam timing you can get a straight up timing set and make alot more power
Take the truck to an engine shop who is well versed in big blocks, they will get that 460 singing just like a song for you Robbie. And pulling like a freight train
I love Robby 😂 it’s all fun and games till the mini boss gets mad 😂
Colton is a solid addition to the crew.
He’s competent, yet inquisitive; steady but ready to laugh, too.
That 250 alt is a sexy beast, but don’t tell “The Boss”. She might get jealous.
Colton is going to be a great addition with his experience and look.
Robby, if you saved the old spotlights from the back of king Fred, you could put led headlights in them for perhaps a future project.
Here from Donut, Thanks for facilitating and being a huge part of their project, youre a skilled dude, keep sharing what you do!
Hope you get that engine running well, I don't think that big Diesel is what you want off road.
I think a fairlead was originally used on ships to guide ropes and keep them from fraying.
The exhaust leak is one of my PET PEEVES but Matt, Paul, and Rory has them too.
And super common on these 460s.
With all those commercials, good luck getting to a million subscribers!
Nice alternator, Robby, may I suggest a four core radiator for Fred, and a thermostat. All that bounching around on the last recovery might have shaken up stuff inside, and caused it too clog and blow. But on the flip side everything else is now cleaned with antifreeze. Have a better week and count your blessings amen.
The paint job I think will look great on the wrecker. Can't wait till you complete the build!
Fairlead is just what you call a device used to Gide your line back onto the spool or let out with out snagging on sharp corners
They can have rollers or just be a smooth surface with rounded edges to help keep friction from causing your line from failing
And fairlead is a device that is and was used on sailing ships
Can't wait for the 12 valve swap!
But it would be awesome if you would swap a pre emissions cam and timing gear set in that sleeping giant.
The 460 is an absolute monster when set up correctly.
Robbie complained when the wheels were still rotating in bad traction.
Don't expect a diesel to like wild wheel spinning technique in mud. Low RPM Torque. Still need traction.
I agree I think they should have rebuilt that 460
460 is the best for that truck probably never had tune up maybe needs injectors cleaned
@@monkeybusiness63
And it has a nasty exhaust leak . I would hope Hillbilly takes good care of the engine .
Wouldn't a Timing Light be needed to check the timing?
In off-roading, a fairlead is used to guide the winch cable and remove lateral strain from the winch. A roller fairlead is used with steel cable and a hawse fairlead is used with synthetic cable. Fairleads are used on almost every sailboat.
12 valve is a great way to go. Can’t wait to watch the build!
King Fred needs a 7.3 Godzilla. Make it happen!!!
For your air filter, you get the 2 hoses in between. There's that plastic piece they're called the horns. Cut the horns off and reduces air flow.
That's the best looking alternator I've ever seen!
fancy jet paint job is cool , but honestly , i’m just happy to see Fred be Robby-Blue ☺️ cheers
Even the new alternator is ROBBY BLUE, like the neon sigh in the office! I even have a pic of Robby, Hillbilly and myself in front of that sign the day it was hung on the wall. Thanks guys.
Boy... How many times did my Dad and I get each other with the horn honk? Oldest prank in the book that still works in 2023.
Adley's AC/DC shirt!, she knows good music! so cute with her jokes of the day! Love the show all :)
Me and hillbily would have had a few words on this day... Colton did a great job of keeping his cool!
Robby, I believe that vacuum solenoid is the EGR Thermactor solenoid. I've had that same issue with the gas guage needle after removing the cluster. You'll have to pull the cluster again and tilt it to left to reset the needle and it should work again after that.
Dual layer heat shrink tubing has an inner layer of glue that makes it water tight. Good for keeping corrosion out of the crimp.
Robby you amaze me all the time with how much you know. When I first started watching your videos back when the Golden Nugget was recovered I thought you was a body and paint guy only. Now I know you have so many skills. It's always good to know how to work on things besides just doing one job. I learned Plumbing carpentry and Electric for housing and I can fix just about anything on vehicles. I just started messing around with rust repair since I bought my welder.
Hill Billy! Don't let Robby install a Cummins! Go for a Godzilla swap, that will be cool!
For King Fred I think you need an old school cylinder-shaped beacon on the roof right in the middle because you could paint some of the amber plastic to make it look like a crown.
I love the constant Hillbilly wise assing, and Colton seems like a great addition to the team! Wish I could find a guy like him to work with me at my auto shop in Richmond, CA.
A fairlead is a device used to guide a rope or chain to prevent it catching or fraying. Fairleads allow your line to be pulled in a direction that is not always straight. For example, when raising or lowering sails the rope passing through the fairlead is pulled horizontally, while it hoists the sail vertically.
Hydraulic die crimpers are way better than that impact thing. They push the wire strands in together instead of apart, creating less gaps for the copper to slowly flow over time and loosen up. For permanent connection in building 460v, we ALWAYS use the hydraulic crimper to avoid callbacks from hot spot related issues. If you want the best ground, get you a hydraulic crimper set. They're awesome. You'll see what I mean when you use it. It looks nicer and will perform better. They're like $20-30 for a small one that does this size, so worth trying.
Good call, I wondered why I didn't get a set years ago after I got the set. I had used the smash crimp or solder for years.
yep, they are available at harbor freight for a reasonable price
All of our crimping from tiny 0.5mm is done with the correct tool. We have a ratchet crimper in work that goes up to 120mm square cable.
I usually just solder them
@@terencegrams5799 Crimping is considered the best method as it pressure welds the cable and terminal. Solder can fail due to vibration, creep and adds another layer to conduct through.
Oh also those headlight switches and plugs are notorious for melting my old idi ate them. The headlight power runs through the switch. You can buy a harness that adds a relay so the headlight power doesnt go through the switch
💯 correct!!!
Good tip.
I was going to make the same comment. The wiring and such are undersized from the factory for the load on them. Pretty much anything of this era or older needs the headlights on relays along with any aux lighting controlled by the switch.
You all are having a good run of what I’ll call “Paul Cox Luck”. On ward and upward! Glad to see the team working together so well. Those 90s Ford trucks could be buggers! Growing up my dad had a 1990 F-150 with the straight 6 300ci and a 5 speed manual. It had decent torque and a fuel tank switch problem. We’d just carry a spare fuel tank switch as it would melt it once a year or so. That was the only problem we ever had with that ol girl though. At the end I could see Robby straining to hold his tongue about Ford problems 😂 It happens to all makes a models. We had a Chevy Lumina that gave me PTSD when it comes to anything with a Chevy emblems but I don’t mind GMC’s 😂
Cummins for the win definitely gonna give Fab Rats an old school lesson in torque.
It would be cool to see Fred. Get a little fluff and buff befor it gets painted.. I'm really curious how well that original paint would shine again
@RobbyLayton. The fairlead comes from the marine industry. It is a guide for a mooring line which enables the line to be passed through a ship bulwark or other barrier, or to change direction through a congested area without snagging or fouling.
It was later used for land vessel, wagons, etc., that used ropes for pulling, and now it is used to guide winch line on vehicles.
Paint job is going to look amazing I would just also suggest lockers as well, with the 4 link and lockers it will never get stuck, good luck guys!
The sticking ignition switch is a common issue and is dried lubricant on the rod inside of the steering column that bridges over the tilt mechanism to push on the starter switch mounted under the dash where it meets the steering column. Pull all shrowding, the steering wheel, and after pulling the two hinge pins, the tilt mechanism. Now, you can see the rod covered with dried up with grease. Put a rag where it can't drip on the ignition switch and spray down the rod from above with your favorite spray lubricant. Reassemble, and your problem is a thing of the past. I've had to do this on my 88 E350 Moter home and my 1988, 90, and 92 Ford F350 pickups. By the way, the E350 has the E460, and with some mods, I can drag my 2K Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 behind it uphill at 70 mph like a dream. But like its replacement, the V10, the 460 is a gas hogg! The pickups all had the 7.3 diesel and would pull a brick wall. Warning: watch the timing of the ignition switch cylinder holding mechanism as you remove it to get the tilt mechanism off.
After the first horn blow.... Unplug it works fantastic
A fairlead is a device to guide a line, rope or cable around an object, out of the way or to stop it from moving laterally. Typically a fairlead will be a ring or hook. The fairlead may be a separate piece of hardware, or it could be a hole in the structure. There are two types of fairlead: roller and fixed.
It was great meeting you guys , Sounds like Fred is going to be a beast
The Boss is correct. We want to see a nice paint job that is protected by Avalon King.
Yens got a hell of an exhaust leak, fixing that will get you a couple more horses.
Mini Boss with Dad Jokes for the Win.😂😂
FAIRLEAD is a sailing term. Lines, Jib sheets, and halyards pass through fairleads before tieing to cleats where they are secured. Thus, a fairlead is a guide that routes a line from work to a final secured destination :-)) cheers from L.A.
I’m so happy you’re making Fred into a Fummins!
Now you know the blue alt works. 💙 heated up light switch really good. NOW, to find the rest of the shorts.....sniff, look for glowing wires or LARGE fires!
Robby! I contacted Tucson alternator day before yesterday because I have been a customer of theirs for a few projects. They are a really good company and when you call a real person answers. I told them to check out your CZcams page and get in contact with you to collaborate with the engine transplant in the off road wrecker. They seemed pretty excited! Hope it works out
The way you paint Robby, it'll be awesome! My opinion is you could do a nice 1/4" wide pinstripe on the outside edges of the yellow. Just a thought!
Your truck is made for road recoveries so the gearing is not vertical rocky climbs, still an awesome truck as it is.
Robbie should add a second or dual batteries with isolator. It'll keep the load demand on the alternator to a minimum. Let the batteries do the work and let the alternator do the quick recovery charging. Custom coach (Ambulance) wires them this way and they have B/K 250 Alternators with the same setup. Some 15, 20 years still goin. ✔
Wow I was hoping you’d at least diesel swap it, but I didn’t think you’d actually Cummins swap it. That’s gonna be awesome. It’s gonna immediately go from being totally gutless, to having probably too much power lol. It’s gonna be awesome to watch you guys do a diesel
Need to strap that battery down lol. Great video like always. Glad you got some things fixed on king fred😂
I love watching this channel!
I watch Hillbilly talk sometimes, and I wonder if he has “Broca’s Aphasia” like I do.
You’re my favorite Duder, Hillbilly, on this channel!
Hey, Robbie, ask Chad about the Godzilla Ford V-8 he's putting in Griz. We have one in our new motorhome and it's a torque monster!
"Fred is not Fred without red."
-Robbie Layton, 2023
😁😁😁😁😁😁
If you did the engine valve covers and other accents along with the brake calipers and other suspension accents like the link arms and steering arms done in a bright wrinkle red that would be clean and look absolutely amazing with that paint scheme from the airplane you showed!!!!!
24:29 I was JUTS fixing the windshield wipers on my Chevy, P-30 StepVan this week! :) it has two windshield wiper motors (two piece windshield) .. I could NOT figure out why the driver's side is working on and off, so I switched the plugs, at least I have a driver's side wiper now!
The heat gun solder connectors you recommended on one episode work GREAT!
The widget you found is the EVR, egr vacumm regulator and the noise on shut down is normal. Don't mess with it, it can affect starting and power delivery, the $15 part caused me a lot of grief on out 1990 E250, not the easiest to diagnos, all looked/tested fine but it was a problem.
Love it Robbie going to look great can’t wait to see it completed.
Your ignition switch issue is most likely the actuator rod that runs from the key tumbler to the actual ignition switch itself at the bottom of the column. Just had the same problem on my 93 Bronco
Mini Boss yelling get back to work has my sides splittin
My summer car irl. Ya'll are doing the young gentlemen who owned this before proud!
Add me to the 'don't do a diesel' camp. You don't need all that weight up front. Just set up that 460 correctly.
I think it would be cool to see him pull that motor and have someone that knows what they’re doing go through that motor and get rid of all non-essentials under the hood and a manual transmission the truck will go fine. It irks me to no end when he’s calling it gutless when it’s in 2 Wheel on a gravel road going up a steep hill with the tires spinning.
i got a super duty f450 460 brush truck at the fire house i would say is not gutless number one things we have to tell drivers is to slow down on off road trails we got to put it in 4 low not because of it being impassable but it real gears her down to a maintainable trail speed.
Hey on that alternator you need to run about a 2 gauge wire. (The stock wiring you use is nothing but a fusible link)
Fairlead is an old nautical term that dates back to 1855. To "fair" something was to "bring it into perfect alignment". It was often used in relation to rivet holes in construction. Hence 'fairlead' is to bring a lead (rope etc) into perfect alignment.
Like the paint design, when the truck is finished it will be brilliant.
Welcome Colton. Love your kids in the videos. Very sweet Robby and Demri. God bless
What a unit this is going to be.
Hope that new Alternator fits the new engine on the way. 👍🏼
Hey Guys.. those light switches are notorious for burning out and causing wiring problems. I'd replace it and keep a backup switch available. Good luck and God Bless Y'all..
I got to say!!! I love the paint scheme ❤.
Once Fred has a Cummins this will be the coolest recker on CZcams.
Way better than mr junkyard LS Matt.
Love that paint skem is going to look so good
Love your videos btw, You probably have a probably with your iac valve my 460 pulls great i pulled a 40 foot travel trailer from Oregon to New mexico with it i couldn't even feel the trailer.
FYI, 460's have special cam/timing settings for low end torque or high rpm smokin the tires!
Correct, and for a tow vhehicle you want low end torque!
Looking good. That Wire Pro comes in handy for you a lot. That was a great gift and very useful!
That sounds like a great engine swap, thank goodness it wasn't an LS
What is fairlead in ship?
A fairlead is a device used to guide a rope or chain to prevent it catching or fraying. Fairleads allow your line to be pulled in a direction that is not always straight. For example, when raising or lowering sails the rope passing through the fairlead is pulled horizontally, while it hoists the sail vertically.
You'll love your new 12 valve Cummins. Good choice.
Best part of the video is the little boss telling her jokes and telling you guys get back to work. That made my day thank you little boss 👍👍👍
Big Red soda can paint job with Big Fred spayed in place. Heck they even make Big Blue Soda so whatever route you go would be pretty cool.
Adjust your distributor to 14° base timing (you may have to run higher octane in the summer) it will may a big difference for the type of work you are doing with the truck.
FAIRLEAD : to bring into perfect alignment, to make beautiful
A fairlead is a device to guide a line, rope or cable around an object, out of the way or to stop it from moving laterally. Typically a fairlead will be a ring or hook.
I like the mock airplane paint scheme. So I vote YES!
