Creepy Funeral Relics and a Sheepish Encounter | Fylingdales*

- Join me on a cemetery walk at Old St Stephen's Church in Fylingdales (Yorkshire) where I have an encounter with the sheep that roam the graveyard. After my visit I was thinking about how I'd feel about my grave or a family members grave being walked on by sheep....Interested to hear your opinions.
#grave #sheep #farming
You know it's 'Fylingdales', & not 'Flyingdales', right? 🤔
I don't think anyone noticed. Not even me lol. I'm dyslexic :(
@@deadgoodwalks haha 👍🏻
@@paula3124 Thanks the heads up btw Paula
@@deadgoodwalks ha ha ha 🙄😆
I didn’t notice either 😅🤫
Actually there are quite a few places that rent sheep and goats to clear up the overgrowth , It's an environmental way to completely remove unwanted plants. Goats are great because they can eat things like poison oak and other toxic plants that are harmful and eradicate them and their droppings used as fertilizer . Its a win , win strategy .
Yes I was just going to say this. It’s a very smart way to control the grass in such tight spaces
Once the term you pay for is up for the grave I think it would be a good idea as families have moved on and no longer take flowers. It will stop it getting wild I suppose.
And goats provide an extra layer of protection. A goat (and even better a donkey) will take on a stray dog or a coyote (not that those are an issue on that side of the Atlantic)... I'm just surprised that it was sticking with it's herd so easily. Every one I've ever met has thought that fences were more of a challenge than an actual agreed upon barrier. lol. As a line from a favourite, but relatively obscure play, that I love says in regards to goats: "They can't be fenced, they smell bad, and they have a poor reputation in literature." That being said, I love the little weirdos.
We should do that over here in the US. Because we have so many Graveyards that are overgrown with grass and trees.
@@bionicnichola9251 “once the term is up”? What does this mean?
The sheep keep the weeds and grass at manageable levels If it weren't for the sheep you would never see the gravestones Better than a strimmer catching the gravestones and causing damage Love the blog always interesting keep up the good work
Thats a good point about the strimmer, thanks Brian
Please Lord if I am put in the ground let some sheep graze on me!! Love this video!
Thank you sexy nun
Oh Lordy. You just reminded me of the time I found some wild strawberries in a graveyard … They tasted like bubblegum🤷🏻♀️😅
I have been to grave yards where it is impossible to visit an ancestors grave owing to thick growth of weeds etc.Sadly often congregations are dwindling and nobody wants to take on jobs such as keeping the graveyard cleared. I think its a great natural and effective solution to the problem to have Gods innocent creatures find food and do the job in the process .Its certainly far better than the old remove all the graves so someone can easily mow that has seen countless historic churchyards emptied and the history on the stones lost.
I think it is a great idea. It feeds the animals and clears the brush and grass. 🙂
Absolutely not disrespectfull, is a good thing. Cleans up area from unwanted weed growth
animals in graveyards are totally common, i've even seen everything from deer to coyote (need to watch the coyote!) in cemetery tours in Los Angeles! as for walking on graves, cemetery caretakers say, they have to walk on them to mow the grass, or you wouldn't even know there was a grave there! i really don't have a problem with the sheep or goats, for that matter, they don't know anything about disrespect, they're just eating grass and weeds, with no evil intention in their hearts 🤗 bless them, they're okay 💞
I’m glad we don’t have coyotes over here…just foxes which are probably a lot smaller. That’s true about having no evil intentions…lovely x
@@deadgoodwalks 🥰
Heck no, it isn’t disrespectful!
Thanks Dan, I love it when you go into the old church’s! I really got a giggle out of you and the sheep!❤
I like squirrels and goats for cemetarys.
And learned something again... English sheep sound like German ones 🤣.... Thanks for the video 😊
😂 Very welcome Sabine
kind of like everyone smiles in the same language 😂
I love this cemetery... One of my favourite... The little sheep, the location and that church is so beautiful... Thank you for the promenade...
Sheep, natures lawnmower, ;-)
Thank you Dan for the beautiful walk. What a beautiful, well maintained church. I love it ❤️
Loved the sheep distraction & giggling! 'Well this is awkward' 🤣🤣😂🤣 'not bending over to read that' 🤣🤣😆🤣 they look like ewes, rams have horns, I think it's goats that charge from the rear lol. Sheep seem nice, doesn't feel disrespectful, probably for grazing so they don't need to cut the grass! I love Shaun the sheep 😂😂😂
Hahaha thank you
You're a courageous guy with an interest in history, and people like you are engraving history into online annals. After all, cemeteries are history, a priceless & precious history, that needs to be archived and preserved. Daniel, You have an important mission.🤩🤩🤩
The church is very plain not what I would expect for a church like your vid and the scenery is beautiful
I've spent many Happy Holidays in Robin Hoods Bay when my kids were little Dan.. I think North Yorkshire is such a beautiful place.. Even in Winter and that is a lovely little church, the sheep are doing a grand job of keeping the grass down, probably done it for years.. Thank you for sharing, from a cold East Yorkshire 🌻
No, it’s a very cost effective way to keep a church yard tidy. Sheep wander over hill forts where the long dead lay from battles or burials, their graves are as sacred as those with stone monuments. Much nicer than a noisy mower that can’t get around the stones easily.
What a gorgeous day!! The sky is so blue!! The view from the church is just spectacular!! Thank you!!😁🇺🇸🙏❤
I have been watching for awhile and love your videos. I am addicted to the really OLD Graves. I have also found Abandoned Chapels with Floor Tombs. It breaks my heart, to think that these People attended a Beautiful Chapel that is now in Ruins. Nobody from their family is visiting or praying. SO SAD 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you for watching my videos. Yeah some of the places are really sad but hopefully their spirits are in a better place
One of your cutest walks ever because of the sheeps around the cemetery..loved it, thank you DGW
From northern Michigan by the way, this is my favorite cemetery channel now. Thank you!
Village near me has sheep 🐑 in the churchyard which I think is ideal for them. Is a small farm near by and yeah I sometimes come across them 🤣
Can't blame the sheep for hanging around that cemetery, it's a beautiful place, with the ocean and mountains for a view, who wouldn't want to be buried there, or eat rhe grass 😊 great video, thanks.
Well kept graveyard and all done by nature .👍
The sheep keep the grass cut
That’s not a bad idea at all having sheep grazing. It will stop strimmer damage to stones & of course it can be very awkward to mow around. Another excellent video. Thank you for taking time out to make them. I find it curiously interesting, a visit to the ancestors.
Such a lovely church!
Oh my gosh! This is too funny! I don’t want any trouble bandits! 😂😂😂 I enjoyed that immensely 😊
Yep coats are good for the land 👍
Great walk, Dan. Hope you're feeling better soon!
Thank you Chris 🤒
Thank you for showing such details of the church arrangement. I, except for films (Sleepy Hollow, Silent Hill), haven't seen anything, like this anywhere.
Thank you for doing this vlog on that beautiful church, l cannot help but think, when you wandered inside that it looked very much like the layout of a very old court house.
From a lot of angles, that cemetery looks like it could just as well be an old pioneer cemetery along the Central California coast - even the sheep. And definitely one of the coolest old churches I've seen.
Great to see something as old respected and untouched. Here in the R. Of S.A. it will sadly be broken, destroyed or burned.
I think it’s lovely. Our bodies go back in to the ground and back to nature. Sheep help keep it clear. As with some you have visited, all over grown and not cared for. Beautiful cemetery. Thank you as always.
Beautiful scenery outside
Lmao, you walk through creepy graveyards and the sheep freak you out?
This place is stunning!!! I’m hoping to come to the Uk one day and I don’t think I’d ever have enough time to see all these places!! ❤
I haven’t been getting notifications for your channel. Was scrolling and saw you had a video. My dad was raised in Oklahoma the church that is there now his father and my father plus brothers built it. My father, when he was a young child you got your pew reserved for one’s family for a donation every month. Nobody sat in your designated pew. Seeing the pews in this video made me think of what he said. The goats being in the grave yard might be the way of keeping the grass cut back because goats are good for eating away any kind of plants. Help keep the grave yard clean.
Gorgeous view! Simply breathtaking to see, your videos get better and better!

Great video. Very interesting church and I would rather have a sheep walking across me keeping the grass nice and short than being overgrown with weeds and grass and completely forgotten and hidden. I think it is an excellent idea. One aspect of these videos sis that for a brief moment these long lost and forgotten people are remembered by an audience who would have never known about their lives or very existence if it wasn't for your videos. I also love the easy, relaxed and natural approach you take, no hype, no gimmicks, it really is an excellent channel.
Thanks for taking me along.these are not that far from me.but as I'm in a chair it difficult to get around these places
Beautiful church and cemetery, so peaceful too.Thank you for taking us around.
I think the church is quite nice and it has a lovely view very peaceful I enjoy your video's hope to see more take care Possum 😊
I see benefit in letting the farm animals (not cows, obviously - the smaller animals) graze to keep the graveyard mowed down. I see the downside as being a visitor could step "in something". As for disrespect, I know that I would rather have someone see my parents stones rather than a pile of weeds and briars, so I see nothing of disrespect. Other than a pile of poop that will weather away in short time.
I suppose it is how one looks at it.
Well put, Yeah it's just the poop that I'd have an issue with
And the poop is fertilizer
Just discovered your channel and enjoying it very much this was a lovely place with a really interesting church and some great Shetland sheep lawnmowers ! Putting water on the gravestones can sometimes make them easier to read 😊
Lovely walk as always. This time it made me think it was summer again. Listening to that crunchy dry grass. 😉☀️
Wow,very pretty place!!🪦😻
Thank you, the biggest laugh of my day was at you and the sheep 😂
You have to turn the electricity on to play the organ 😂. Beautiful church very well kept cemetery, beautiful view to the Robin Hood bay ❤
I enjoy the places you visit, and let us go along with you.The view of the sea was so peaceful and quiet except for the odd baa🐑.I am a transplanted liverpudlian residing in Toronto Canada.I miss the British country side. Will have to take a trip back in the near future 🇬🇧🇨🇦🇬🇧🐑
We visited Giggleswick Parish church in 2003. And had to pick our way through the droppings. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
The only Lawn Care Crew you need to fence in lol. They work for food, keep the grass trimmed down do all the trimmings. They work early morning’s late nights, 7 day’s week, never ask for time off or pay raise 😆. You might get a bah here or there, just saying we’re still here working (eating). 🇺🇸
It's natural. My goodness ppl complain over nothing.
Dan, I am glad you didn't have a baaaad experience with the Sheep. Anyway thank you so much for the tour and the church outside was very pretty along with the grounds . If you ever go back there take a few of seconds of the ocean please. It looks very pretty with the water. Thanks for the tour Dan and have a great week.
haha thaks Joel
The beauty of the region and cemetery are quite interesting. Love quiet seaside villages/towns. Keep up the good walks.
I really enjoyed this video. The sheep are doing a good job of keeping the grass and weeds manageable. They really kept an eye on you. 😂
Greeting from Chicago! I found your channel by accident and now I’m hooked! Your narration makes me feel like I’m exploring alongside of you. Keep them coming, please!
The church is very atmospheric.🤩 I wonder, how many and what kind of parishioners there. 🤔🧐
I think you made a few friends. The church and graveyard are quite well maintained. Loved this video.
I ran into your videos the other day..I love them ,I’m such a fan thank you for your amazing videos and for future videos as well your voice is so relaxing ❤
Thank you Krissy, glad you’re enjoying them
❤
Your so welcome I am enjoying, and I’ll continue to support you on all your adventures
1751? Wow, that is an old Cemetery and church. I Wish the old pipe organ still worked, good show!
Gravesheep... could be a name you might encounter on a stele in Yorkshire... lol.
It’s a fantastic way to clear weeds. Safe for the environment. Fertilizes the ground. I don’t see the issue.
They keep it clear, and make use of land that would otherwise be useless.
what a lovely old church, being a bigger guy i dont think id have risked going up those stairs id have probably gone straight through lmao
Fantastic building that looks very original. You can imagine the original Georgian parishioners in there.
Wonder how many of the families still live locally.
I had a chuckle when you were avoiding the sheep.😊
I think them being there is beneficial in keeping the growth down. I would imagine no one is properly taking care of it anymore so the sheep do the mowing. ❤
That was hilarious... "Well this is awkward..."😆 they are darling sheep... People also get sheep instead of using lawn mowers...
Thanks for the tour, great history, with a twist... P.S. please never clean headstones, that erases the historical value...🥰
The organ works!! Its a pump organ. You sit down and put your feet on the peddles and pump them up and down. There are billows that force air through the pipes as you play them. 🎵🎶
Great episode thanks
some lovely old stones
Love the old organ n the church it self
Those 'pews?' remind me of Victorian Era sleeping benches with the numbers on the sides.
Just an easy relaxing walk. 👏🏼
Hi Dan loved the video. Never seen goats at a cemetary before. They will eat up the grass and all. Couple of them wanted to follow you around. Enjoyed it. Love from Georgia USA
Thank you Joan, Yes they were a little curious....hopefully they will subscribe to the channel lol.
Super
Creepy old looking cemetery wow. Wafer thin headstones dated over centuries old and well preserved I guess.
Such an interesting church, I have never seen a layout like this. Love your videos, thank you !
You're out dealing with Demons and Geists and Vampire tombs and the spookiest graveyards and kirks in Europe and UK ... and sheep shook you? Somehow that is just adorable. lol
Fear nothing but sheep! lol. Thanks for the kind words
Uk fan keep up the good work 🎉
I noticed right at the beginning when he entered the graveyard. He also said it a few times.
The sheep are lovely.
I love going for walks with you...
Awww thank you x
You have to pump the pedals for the church organ to work 😊
ahhh lol
I really enjoyed all of this. Thank you so much.
Very nice church ⛪ ❤😮😂😊🎉
Bremerhaven North Coast of Germany I've worked there a few times.
Bedankt
😮 Wow Martha, Thats incredibly kind. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and Bedankt for your support!. 🤯 ❤️
You welcome
Your’re welcome

With no disrespect but the Lamb of God maintaining holy ground seems so appropriate.
It's a great idea....they will trim the grass! Plus they are cute 🐐 I'm sure the dead don't mind some visitors 😊 I'm not bending over 🤣🤣🤣 Beautiful cemeteries there!
I ❤️ the 🐑
I liked it the sheep guarding the dead❤
I once watched a Polish blogger, who studied the Chernobyl (Pripyat') cemetery at night. But it's definitely not safe to go there alone.
"Well, This is Awkward..." lolololol
Keeps the grass down and saves Money on gardeners. Good idea really. Should be introduced
To all overgrown graveyards.
Shut them councillors up!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
