The idea of a character actually 'reading' a cutscene with the player in a non-meta way is so novel and I'm delighted to be able to add that to the list of the many charming things this game does.
Also, I just went down a rabbit hole trying to figure out if Daisuke Amaya still gets royalties from Cave Story ports. I really can't tell, so maybe someone else can clarify, but I should point out that Daisuke seems to have had full creative control in the ports and remakes. Ah Cave Story, a truely beautiful game. Many years ago, one fine day in my school's computer room, we were given a free period to use the computers as we liked. While other students opened up paint, or practised their email skills; I spied an odd little folder hiding idly... simply titled "Doukutsu". I don't know how it got there, it wasn't on the other PCs. probably wasn't supposed to be there either, perhaps the admin didn't notice it yet. I was just at the right place, at the right time, with the right amount of curiosity... and that introduced me to one of the best gaming experiences of my life. Impacting me to this day. Whomever the rebel that was *bold* enough to put the Masterpiece creation on that particular computer I used that day... thank you, you are a real MVP
nobody really talks about the music creator he made. I remember downloading cave story and it came with the music maker and i was so invested in making little tunes it was so nice even though it wasnt the best way to make music
@@CerealKiller Actually there are quite a few people that still use ORGmaker, there are lots of great tunes made every week on the ORG discord group and the source code to the program got dumped last year on top of it.
I'm writing a fanfiction sequel to Cave Story and as a massive fan, this sequel has great potential. I see more in Cave Story and I will make it happen.

I have so much respect for you and the way you branch out and just talk about whatever you're passionate for, video games, anime, life, etc. Great video, Cave Story has been on my plan to play list for a while but this makes me want to check it out right now, the story is a lot more involved than I expected and the gameplay looks sick.
As someone who has only ever played the PC version... this is actually something I've desperately wanted -- to avoid backtracking through the level so many times.
Quote/Curly would fit so well in Smash. With all the talk/controversy of an indie character getting in, I think it plays naturally to Smash's celebration of gaming for the pioneer of indies to be represented. Not to mention it's been ported to like EVERY modern Nintendo console.

Funny thing is there was another indie game heavily inspired by Cave Story & Earthbound, called "The Underside," & is likely never to see the light of day [which makes me want to weep because of how awesome The Underside looks & plays (it even had a small demo that has a lot of content in it)]
Ah... the Ballos fight. I died hundreds of times before getting the true ending on normal. I almost thought if I just suck at the game. Hearing that only 4% of people on Steam got the true ending made me feel much, MUCH better.
I never even bothered to go to the Sanctuary. I got like three different endings playing the game normally without any hints from anyone else, found out about that level, looked at how hard a time I already had with the normal endings, and went "nope".
As far as I care, the "true" ending is saving Curly and getting her the mushroom so she gets her memories back and is among the companions who survive after you destroy the Core. I believe the entirety of the Sanctuary and Ballos to be jarring and out of place from the rest of the game, but I can give that segment a try anyway... ...is what I _would_ say if I didn't consider the machine gun essential to platforming through the Last Cave (and for that matter, the Labyrinth).
@@RoninCatholic to be precise, you don't cave to have the spur, you only need the booster v2.0 and iron bond, and if you are bored to replay the game you can always take save files from the official website
This is my first time hearing about Ballos, I've previously just attempted to get the best ending, and I am currently unable to beat misery, the doctor twice, and the undead core in one run. still i picked the game back up about maybe a week ago, and I am almost done with the best ending, however, Never heard of ballos.
My goodness. This is absolutely beautiful. Thank you SO MUCH for getting word out about this amazing game. If anyone's reading this and hasn't played it, go play it! You will NOT regret! It's an absolute masterpiece, and this video sums it up perfectly.

i remember my older absolutely loving the hell out of it its been quite some time from then still remember peeking over his shoulders from the bed to watch it always had so much character
dude your video gave me so much nostalgia, I remember replaying the demo over and over again on the Wii when I was in middle school. In High school I finally got the full game, though I only got through about 3/4 of the way through the game since I couldn't beat one part I just kept replaying it, but man I love CaveStory its one of the best games I've ever played. I'm about to go replay it again hopefully I can beat it this time though ahaha :)

I really love all the videos you put out, but this one is special to me. Cave Story is one of my top five favorite games of all time, and I hate that it isn't more recognized than it is, so I really an glad to know that there are people out there who would spread the word about this game. Cave Story was also the first game I remember that ever made me cry so yeah...I hold it pretty close to me.P.S I was in the middle of the blood stained sanctuary and I could NOT for the life of me figure out how to beat it. So I go to gamefaq to get some tips and this guy goes, "Cave Story isn't that hard why do you need help." -__- Forget that guy. I did end up beating it on hard a few years later and, man, was it brutal.
I've always found Cave Story as a hidden stash of diamonds. Despite it's tremendous value, it's a thing that very few people find. I think it shouldn't follow Undertale in entering mainstream and reaching global appeal. I've heard many stories of peoples' experiences being ruined on account of dedicated fans' praise. Overexpectations can be dangerous. I'm glad I found it, and I'll never forget it. It has a special place in my heart, alongside my personal favorites, alongside Mafia 1, Beyond:G&E and TWEWY, which i regard similarly. I'm not wishing the game to be unpopular, I just think that everyone should have their own blind experience, both with finding the game, as well as playing it for the first time.
Well it definitely was one of the first indie games and I love cave story and undertale but I agree there definitely there own identity I don't think either steals from eachother
Undertale didn't even attempt to become a mainstream hit though, it just happened out of nowhere. It's nice to see indie games explode in popularity like that.

One of my favorite games as well. I remembered when I first played it, barely hearing or knowing anything about it. Getting the true ending of this game is still one of my proudest gaming achievements.
Cave Story isn't just a game: it's a seminal masterpiece for its time, and of which its impact is still felt to this day. Given that it has a freeware version, there's absolutely no reason anybody shouldn't give it a try and see if they can't form an Iron Bond with it. Also, the site mention also hosts the Cave Story Forums, which is pretty much the mecca for all things related to this charming title, and has plenty of stand alone mods made by the community that are a blast to play. In particular, there's Jenka's Nightmare, which is pretty much a harder fan sequel to C.S. that has a pretty good plot, great map design, can actually utilize the original's game's save data to give players bonuses based on how/what they did (What weapons you collected, how many life capsules you collected, keeping the Little Man or not...), and comes with its own handy guide so that nobody can get hopelessly stuck! If anyone out doesn't want to let go of their Polar Stars just yet, or want to pick it right back up, JN is the fangame for you!

this is the first game i played through entirely with the different endings and it holds a really big part of my heart as a gamer and when i bring it up to my friends they are hella lost but either way i love this game so i cant be mad

I still remember when I first got Cave Story. Had to have been 2012, back when it was a downloadable title for the DSi shop. I was at my G. Grandma's house, siphoning wifi from the neighbors, and waiting patiently so I could play the game. It took me a little while to get into, and even longer to beat, but holy crap if it didnt have an impact on me. Since then, I've downloaded the Wii demo for it, bought the 3ds port, bought it on Steam and bought an XBox controller so I could play it on steam, and even got a physical Switch version. I *LOVE* this game, and everything it has to offer.
I've been stuck on Last Cave for over a year at this point. Even so, this is still one of my personal favorite games, and I can't recommend it enough. One of these days, I'll finally get the best ending.
When I was a kid, I always wanted this game on the wii shop channel. I would play the demo over and over and over and over. It was a huge part of my childhood, just that demo. The music, the characters. I always wanted to see what would happen after egg zone. I bought it on switch, and beat it for the first time six months ago. The rest of the game was not a disappointment, but a fulfillment. It's just as good as my 5 year old brain could've imagined, and then some. Thank you for this video.
I haven't played Cave Story in forever, last time I did was the original freeware version, but next time I play it, I'm considering getting the Steam port. I feel this game has become a bit overlooked since the first ports came out, mostly because of other indie titles coming out, but I do still think Cave Story is the gold standard of how indie titles should be, alongside Yume Nikki, another indie game that came out around the same time as Cave Story.
I loved hearing and sharing in your memories of this game. I have bought Cave Story four times as well and have great memories of playing it through out high school and up to this day.
Really enjoyable video, and coming across this randomly was actually what prompted me to take Cave Story off my "I'll play that someday" list and play through it. Something I then did practically nonstop for the last few weeks until I got all the endings, on original difficulty, of course (well, I'm playing through again for the Mimiga Hat ending now, but still). It's a game that you're very quickly able to see why it's so beloved, an instant classic, and that's from someone who's very wary of platformers and was dreading the Hell area for it's famous difficulty. One note though about the Steam Statistics, I think they're probably a little lower than they should be due to what I can only assume is a bug. I've beaten the game three times now and I haven't gotten an achievement for any of the victories, even though I've got the achievement for killing Ballos.
I remember first discovering Cave Story several years ago, when my friend introduced it to me. ( It was the freeware version.) It has since then become on of my all-time favorite video games, and holds a incredibly special place in my heart. Funnily enough I learned about it sometime in 2011 as well, but honestly had no idea that a remaster existed at the time, I hadn't even heard of Steam at the time. ( Which again, funnily enough, the same friend who introduced me to Cave Story would end up also introducing me to Steam)

I found this game in 2010 on the DSi online store, I never beat it until 4 years later, really I just forgot to beat it. I first played this game MANY years ago. I don't know what compelled to buy it when I was a kid. It is also, one of my favorite games of all time. I really know NO ONE who knows this game apart from my brother. I love this game so much and the music is amazing!

As someone who has been playing this game for years, and speedruns it, I can safely say Cave Story is a flawless game. its gameplay is addicting, its level design is masterful, its soundtrack and artstyle have aged perfectly, and its narrative keeps on giving. And it was made by someone who just wanted to make a game, out of sheer love, and gave it for free out of sheer humbleness. Cave Story talks about hope, about standing up and fighting and making a difference, despite all odds. It's about trust and loyalty, and about power and ambition. It keeps saying stuff even today, and especially today. And it deserves to be talked about and remembered and ported to newer consoles so new generations experience it. Thank you, really.
You forgot to mention the Switch version also has a local 2-player mode! That being said, great video, it really shows your passion for the game. I was a huge fan of Cave Story back in the day and it's great seeing people still loving it ~15 years after its release.
I remember this game vaguely from my childhood, years ago my brother was playing Cave Story 3D and i got to watch him a little. I also remember playing the Wii demo, but only getting as far as the mimiga village. Then this game completely exited my mind. I started out with Cave Story on the 3DS, too, and I ended up beating the true final boss on normal mode about 2 years later on a car ride to Colorado for vacation. When I beat it, i just sat there and contemplated for about the next 30 minutes, wondering about what I should do next because I didn’t want this feeling of pure joy to end. Cut to 3-4 years later, I’m in high school, and I see a game on steam: “Hollow Knight.” After putting almost 80 total hours for both Switch and Steam versions, I can confidently say that it has given me the same experience, and almost feels like a spiritual successor in some ways. Im glad another person cares for Cavestory as much as i do, i play the switch version but I remember when i played the DS version. You gave all reasoning on how good this game is, Doukutsu wanted people to play his amazing game, and thus people did. If im honest, you pointing out every amazing detail Cavestory offers made me shed a tear, ive played Cavestory for a couple years now and still love it so much.
I have played this game many a time and it rests at the lofty position of my 2bd favorite game just a hair behind subnautica. I was introduced to it by a friend who had gotten it as wiiware. I remember him hyping it up as much as elementary school boys could and with all he had said I was expecting a game with graphics that destroyed anything that came before because being a small child that was what determined the quality of a game but when I got to the game I was greeted by unassuming pixel art and music that was unlike anything I had heard in games before. After spending most of the night there and heading home in the dark I was hooked. I got to the labyrinth and like most people was stuck. I drifted apart with that friend and forgot about it for a few years. One day me and that friend reconnected and he had cave story+ in his steam account and I went home and installed the shareware version, that was the first time I beat it all the way through. I now have it on switch finally getting the true ending in hard mode just a few short months ago. Today I convinced a friend to buy it and after he beats it plan to refer him to this video. This game is the reason I’m into gaming as a whole and the reason I’m learning C# so I can be like the other kids who grew up playing masterpieces and I for one know I’m going to make shit games but it’s fine because my hobby isn’t making them but if I ever make something worth playing I’ll post it here.
I remember a lot of my friends being into Cave Story but never gave it a try myself, I will try to make time for it. I enjoy hearing you discuss and shed light on mediums other than anime; it's interesting seeing what threads of appreciation you share throughout. EGS giving Cave Story+ for free brought me here! I've just swallowed this game whole in 5 hours without stopping, though only getting a normal ending. I actually plan to go through the process of getting the best one and saving the main game waifu (how dreadful I felt to just let her, well, save Quote throwing away her life in his stead). For some reason, even after playing many modern games, I very rarely experienced the same emotions as after and during Cave Story. It makes you laugh sometimes, it makes you dance to the bit, it makes you think about global problems and humanities best and worst moments. It challenges you to think - and to play. It never feels too forced, and it's short enough to keep you on your toes and long enough to not fill rushed. This game is a gem.
Found it years ago, at a flea market, on a CD from some PC magazine, those normally had demos on them, but a few times they had full games, one of them was Cave Story, and I played it for HOURS. No matter what, it's underrated.

I first discovered this game on the Wii and about 4 months ago I downloaded it onto my computer. Now I've made it further than ever before. I have talked about this game to many people and they say that they've never heard of it. I was very surprised because they all have had a Wii before and played it all the time. I agree that more people should know about this game because it is a classic that inspired more people to make their own games.
My cave story experience is a strange one: I first got cave story as freeware for my dsi just grabbing some free games to play cause I was bored. I didn't expect much from cave story, which is how I fell in love so quickly. At first, it was harsh... then enjoyable! I fell in love deeply with it. I have yet to beat blood stained sanctuary [after 5-6 years] and my love STILL grows no matter how much stuff try to overshadow it. It's grown on me, and I'm proud to admit it.

I remember wandering around some website with psp homebrews in search of something interesting or themes for my psp. Suddenly i stumbled upon Cave Story. I liked the pixelated look of it and it also was translated to my language, so i decided to download it. I entered it with no expectations and i was amazed by it. The story, the art, the music, the gameplay - all of it is gorgeous. And what amazed me when i played it once again is that has got lots of replayability. It's definitely one of the best games ever, imho.
I love this game so much, i used to play it on the wii when I was a kid. Today it will be free on epic games, cant wait to relive the childhood memories i had.

Cave Story is my all time favorite game, and back when I first got into it, as far as I can tell, most people passed it up, and really only saw the Game Grumps do their Steam Train episodes on it, along with a few other gameplay videos... I'm glad it's gotten more attention over the years!
I saw Cave Story in my recommends and clicked on the video instantaneously. This is a really good video, I can actually really kind of relate with your feelings toward the game. I had the WiiWare version as a kid, I picked up the Switch version a few months ago and got around to finally getting that best ending.
I remember playing this in 1-2 grade of school in ASP, everyone was gathered around the old windows PC and was hyping the person up that was playing it. Now i re-discovered this game which makes me super glad cause it just puts memories in place like a trophy (Basically memory hunter lol) The game will be free on EPIC GAMES 3.12.20 and i cant wait to play it.. I've played this game years ago, time an time again in my middle and high school years, and its amazing to see people bringing up this brilliant creation once more. I was planning a hybrid artists animation for Cave Story, spanning large sections of the game, but this video has given me a morale boost. Now i've got to see it through. I was 7 or 8 yrs old when I first got cave story on my old dsixl. Good god what a game it was, i loved the little characters, the platforming and crowds of enemies. When I reached the final cave and the doc boss, I just couldnt beat it for the next 4 years. When I was 13 and finally did it, oh man what satisfaction that was. "Okay. Finally jeez..." Then I thought, "Wait what if I come back to the blacksmith? What if I brought him the Polar Star?" I was completely free of spoilers still by that point, and so I met the Spur, really an ultimate weapon, "WOAH this was in the game the whole time???" I then learned about the Sanctuary and then I entered. "What the hell.... this is freaking crazy..." took me another year for me to actually face Ballos, now playing on my larger switch. And yet damn, I still haven't beaten him. Still I always will love this little game by Pixel and the little robot.
Thank you for giving Cave Story the review it deserves. It's, without a doubt, one of my favourite videogames of all time, and one of the main reasons why I am pursuing videogame development as an independent programmer.
It feels like this is the game that really helped jumpstart the indie game scene because of its popularity and as a result it showed general audiences that non-AAA games can be just as good or even better than the big releases.

I have never played Cave Story+. When I was younger my dad brought me a laptop and played Cave Story with me. I mostly watched because I was so young every critter would kill me, but, since I was so young, watching my dad play was enough. He also tried to translate it for me to Polish, which was fun too since he wasn't very good at it. Later, when I learnt English thanks to my dad, I played the game again. I was having much trouble with Last Cave, and running hell was impossible for me to get though. I loved this game, the soundtrack I listen to all this time, the story, the old Pixelated graphic, every aspect of this game I found perfect. It is definitely my favourite game. Fun fact. After all this time it turns out that I was playing the fan-version translation. I could never see this game without Grasstown or Balrog saying Huzzah.

Quote/Curly would fit so well in Smash. With all the talk/controversy of an indie character getting in, I think it plays naturally to Smash's celebration of gaming for the pioneer of indies to be represented.

Ah... the Ballos fight. I died hundreds of times before getting the true ending on normal. I almost thought if I just suck at the game. Hearing that only 4% of people on Steam got the true ending made me feel much, MUCH better.
And here i am, on switch, trying to complete hell on HARD mode. I'm getting fucking insane... i got to ballos second in my best attempt.
I never even bothered to go to the Sanctuary. I got like three different endings playing the game normally without any hints from anyone else, found out about that level, looked at how hard a time I already had with the normal endings, and went "nope".
As far as I care, the "true" ending is saving Curly and getting her the mushroom so she gets her memories back and is among the companions who survive after you destroy the Core. I believe the entirety of the Sanctuary and Ballos to be jarring and out of place from the rest of the game, but I can give that segment a try anyway...
...is what I _would_ say if I didn't consider the machine gun essential to platforming through the Last Cave (and for that matter, the Labyrinth).

This is my first time hearing about Ballos, I've previously just attempted to get the best ending, and I am currently unable to beat misery, the doctor twice, and the undead core in one run. still i picked the game back up about maybe a week ago, and I am almost done with the best ending, however, Never heard of ballos.

I was never able to get the full game so I played the demo on my Wii, but I absolutely fell in love with it just from the demo.

dude your video gave me so much nostalgia, I remember replaying the demo over and over again on the Wii when I was in middle school. In High school I finally got the full game, though I only got through about 3/4 of the way through the game since I couldn't beat one part I just kept replaying it, but man I love CaveStory its one of the best games I've ever played. I'm about to go replay it again hopefully I can beat it this time though ahaha :)

I really love all the videos you put out, but this one is special to me. Cave Story is one of my top five favorite games of all time, and I hate that it isn't more recognized than it is, so I really an glad to know that there are people out there who would spread the word about this game. Cave Story was also the first game I remember that ever made me cry so yeah...I hold it pretty close to me.P.S I was in the middle of the blood stained sanctuary and I could NOT for the life of me figure out how to beat it. So I go to gamefaq to get some tips and this guy goes, "Cave Story isn't that hard why do you need help."

I've always found Cave Story as a hidden stash of diamonds. Despite it's tremendous value, it's a thing that very few people find. I think it shouldn't follow Undertale in entering mainstream and reaching global appeal. I've heard many stories of peoples' experiences being ruined on account of dedicated fans' praise. Overexpectations can be dangerous. I'm glad I found it, and I'll never forget it. It has a special place in my heart, alongside my personal favorites, alongside Mafia 1, Beyond:G&E and TWEWY, which i regard similarly. I'm not wishing the game to be unpopular, I just think that everyone should have their own blind experience, both with finding the game, as well as playing it for the first time.

Undertale didn't even attempt to become a mainstream hit though, it just happened out of nowhere. It's nice to see indie games explode in popularity like that.

Cave Story isn't just a game: it's a seminal masterpiece for its time, and of which its impact is still felt to this day. Given that it has a freeware version, there's absolutely no reason anybody shouldn't give it a try and see if they can't form an Iron Bond with it.
Also, the site mention also hosts the Cave Story Forums, which is pretty much the mecca for all things related to this charming title, and has plenty of stand alone mods made by the community that are a blast to play. In particular, there's Jenka's Nightmare, which is pretty much a harder fan sequel to C.S. that has a pretty good plot, great map design, can actually utilize the original's game's save data to give players bonuses based on how/what they did (What weapons you collected, how many life capsules you collected, keeping the Little Man or not...), and comes with its own handy guide so that nobody can get hopelessly stuck! If anyone out doesn't want to let go of their Polar Stars just yet, or want to pick it right back up, JN is the fangame for you!

I still remember when I first got Cave Story. Had to have been 2012, back when it was a downloadable title for the DSi shop. I was at my G. Grandma's house, siphoning wifi from the neighbors, and waiting patiently so I could play the game. It took me a little while to get into, and even longer to beat, but holy crap if it didnt have an impact on me. Since then, I've downloaded the Wii demo for it, bought the 3ds port, bought it on Steam and bought an XBox controller so I could play it on steam, and even got a physical Switch version. I *LOVE* this game, and everything it has to offer.
I've been stuck on Last Cave for over a year at this point. Even so, this is still one of my personal favorite games, and I can't recommend it enough. One of these days, I'll finally get the best ending.

When I was a kid, I always wanted this game on the wii shop channel. I would play the demo over and over and over and over. It was a huge part of my childhood, just that demo. The music, the characters. I always wanted to see what would happen after egg zone. I bought it on switch, and beat it for the first time six months ago. The rest of the game was not a disappointment, but a fulfillment. It's just as good as my 5 year old brain could've imagined, and then some. Thank you for this video.
I haven't played Cave Story in forever, last time I did was the original freeware version, but next time I play it, I'm considering getting the Steam port. I feel this game has become a bit overlooked since the first ports came out, mostly because of other indie titles coming out, but I do still think Cave Story is the gold standard of how indie titles should be, alongside Yume Nikki, another indie game that came out around the same time as Cave Story.
I loved hearing and sharing in your memories of this game. I have bought Cave Story four times as well and have great memories of playing it through out high school and up to this day.
Really enjoyable video, and coming across this randomly was actually what prompted me to take Cave Story off my "I'll play that someday" list and play through it. Something I then did practically nonstop for the last few weeks until I got all the endings, on original difficulty, of course (well, I'm playing through again for the Mimiga Hat ending now, but still). It's a game that you're very quickly able to see why it's so beloved, an instant classic, and that's from someone who's very wary of platformers and was dreading the Hell area for it's famous difficulty.
One note though about the Steam Statistics, I think they're probably a little lower than they should be due to what I can only assume is a bug. I've beaten the game three times now and I haven't gotten an achievement for any of the victories, even though I've got the achievement for killing Ballos.

I remember first discovering Cave Story several years ago, when my friend introduced it to me. ( It was the freeware version.) It has since then become on of my all-time favorite video games, and holds a incredibly special place in my heart. Funnily enough I learned about it sometime in 2011 as well, but honestly had no idea that a remaster existed at the time, I hadn't even heard of Steam at the time. ( Which again, funnily enough, the same friend who introduced me to Cave Story would end up also introducing me to Steam)
Cave Story is by far my favorite game ever. Im glad you enjoyed it too. It is one of two of games I like to speedrun. Im also very glad you appreciate the plantation having the main theme. I found this game in 2010 on the DSi online store, I never beat it until 4 years later, really I just forgot to beat it. I love this video, and now I am determined to get three more achievements to pass your count.
I first played this game MANY years ago. I don't know what compelled to buy it when I was a kid. It is also, one of my favorite games of all time. I really know NO ONE who knows this game apart from my brother. I love this game so much and the music is amazing!

As someone who has been playing this game for years, and speedruns it, I can safely say Cave Story is a flawless game. its gameplay is addicting, its level design is masterful, its soundtrack and artstyle have aged perfectly, and its narrative keeps on giving. And it was made by someone who just wanted to make a game, out of sheer love, and gave it for free out of sheer humbleness.
Cave Story talks about hope, about standing up and fighting and making a difference, despite all odds. It's about trust and loyalty, and about power and ambition. It keeps saying stuff even today, and especially today. And it deserves to be talked about and remembered and ported to newer consoles so new generations experience it.

You forgot to mention the Switch version also has a local 2-player mode! That being said, great video, it really shows your passion for the game. I was a huge fan of Cave Story back in the day and it's great seeing people still loving it ~15 years after its release.

I started out with Cave Story on the 3DS, too, and I ended up beating the true final boss on normal mode about 2 years later on a car ride to Colorado for vacation. When I beat it, i just sat there and contemplated for about the next 30 minutes, wondering about what I should do next because I didn’t want this feeling of pure joy to end. Cut to 3-4 years later, I’m in high school, and I see a game on steam: “Hollow Knight.” After putting almost 80 total hours for both Switch and Steam versions, I can confidently say that it has given me the same experience, and almost feels like a spiritual successor in some ways. Thank you, Pixel, and you too, Hiding in Public, for this wonderful experience

I just started playing this. And it is amazing
I have played this game many a time and it rests at the lofty position of my 2bd favorite game just a hair behind subnautica. I was introduced to it by a friend who had gotten it as wiiware. I remember him hyping it up as much as elementary school boys could and with all he had said I was expecting a game with graphics that destroyed anything that came before because being a small child that was what determined the quality of a game but when I got to the game I was greeted by unassuming pixel art and music that was unlike anything I had heard in games before. After spending most of the night there and heading home in the dark I was hooked. I got to the labyrinth and like most people was stuck. I drifted apart with that friend and forgot about it for a few years. One day me and that friend reconnected and he had cave story+ in his steam account and I went home and installed the shareware version, that was the first time I beat it all the way through. I now have it on switch finally getting the true ending in hard mode just a few short months ago. Today I convinced a friend to buy it and after he beats it plan to refer him to this video. This game is the reason I’m into gaming as a whole and the reason I’m learning C# so I can be like the other kids who grew up playing masterpieces and I for one know I’m going to make shit games but it’s fine because my hobby isn’t making them but if I ever make something worth playing I’ll post it here.

I've just swallowed this game whole in 5 hours without stopping, though only getting a normal ending. I actually plan to go through the process of getting the best one and saving the main game waifu (how dreadful I felt to just let her, well, save Quote throwing away her life in his stead). For some reason, even after playing many modern games, I very rarely experienced the same emotions as after and during Cave Story. It makes you laugh sometimes, it makes you dance to the bit, it makes you think about global problems and humanities best and worst moments. It challenges you to think - and to play. It never feels too forced, and it's short enough to keep you on your toes and long enough to not fill rushed.
This game is a gem.

Found it years ago, at a flea market, on a CD from some PC magazine, those normally had demos on them, but a few times they had full games, one of them was Cave Story, and I played it for HOURS.
No matter what, it's underrated.

I first discovered this game on the Wii and about 4 months ago I downloaded it onto my computer. Now I've made it further than ever before. I have talked about this game to many people and they say that they've never heard of it. I was very surprised because they all have had a Wii before and played it all the time. I agree that more people should know about this game because it is a classic that inspired more people to make their own games.
My cave story experience is a strange one:
I first got cave story as freeware for my dsi just grabbing some free games to play cause I was bored. I didn't expect much from cave story, which is how I fell in love so quickly. At first, it was harsh... then enjoyable! I fell in love deeply with it. I have yet to beat blood stained sanctuary [after 5-6 years] and my love STILL grows no matter how much stuff try to overshadow it. It's grown on me, and I'm proud to admit it.
Cave Story is beautiful and I make sure to play it every Halloween or Christmas

I remember wandering around some website with psp homebrews in search of something interesting or themes for my psp. Suddenly i stumbled upon Cave Story. I liked the pixelated look of it and it also was translated to my language, so i decided to download it. I entered it with no expectations and i was amazed by it. The story, the art, the music, the gameplay - all of it is gorgeous. And what amazed me when i played it once again is that has got lots of replayability. It's definitely one of the best games ever, imho.

Cave Story is my all time favorite game, and back when I first got into it, as far as I can tell, most people passed it up, and really only saw the Game Grumps do their Steam Train episodes on it, along with a few other gameplay videos... I'm glad it's gotten more attention over the years!

This is a really good video, I can actually really kind of relate with your feelings toward the game. I had the WiiWare version as a kid, I picked up the Switch version a few months ago and got around to finally getting that best ending.
I remember playing this in 1-2 grade of school in ASP, everyone was gathered around the old windows PC and was hyping the person up that was playing it. Now i re-discovered this game which makes me super glad cause it just puts memories in place like a trophy (Basically memory hunter lol)

I’ve just started playing this game on my Dreamcast. I’m really enjoying it. I just beat the frog in grasslands.
I was 7 or 8 yrs old when I first got cave story on my old dsixl. Good god what a game it was, i loved the little characters, the platforming and crowds of enemies. When I reached the final cave and the doc boss, I just couldnt beat it for the next 4 years. When I was 13 and finally did it, oh man what satisfaction that was. "Okay. Finally jeez..." Then I thought, "Wait what if I come back to the blacksmith? What if I brought him the Polar Star?" I was completely free of spoilers still by that point, and so I met the Spur, really an ultimate weapon, "WOAH this was in the game the whole time???" I then learned about the Sanctuary and then I entered. "What the hell.... this is freaking crazy..." took me another year for me to actually face Ballos, now playing on my larger switch. And yet damn, I still haven't beaten him. Still I always will love this little game by Pixel and the little robot.
Thank you for giving Cave Story the review it deserves. It's, without a doubt, one of my favourite videogames of all time, and one of the main reasons why I am pursuing videogame development as an independent programmer.
Loved how you explained how a first mini boss is now a casual enemy and how the game is telling you just how far you've come.
It feels like this is the game that really helped jumpstart the indie game scene because of its popularity and as a result it showed general audiences that non-AAA games can be just as good or even better than the big releases.

Great video and very interesting look at one of my favourite games of all time, it always warms my heart to watch any content analysing this game :)
I have never played Cave Story+. When I was younger my dad brought me a laptop and played Cave Story with me. I mostly watched because I was so young every critter would kill me, but, since I was so young, watching my dad play was enough. He also tried to translate it for me to Polish, which was fun too since he wasn't very good at it. Later, when I learnt English thanks to my dad, I played the game again. I was having much trouble with Last Cave, and running hell was impossible for me to get though. I loved this game, the soundtrack I listen to all this time, the story, the old Pixelated graphic, every aspect of this game I found perfect. It is definitely my favourite game. Fun fact. After all this time it turns out that I was playing the fan-version translation. I could never see this game without Grasstown or Balrog saying Huzzah.
This is one of my favorite games of all time, and I have always been upset not many people know of it. I played the Demo of it back on the Wii in 2010, and since had me hooked. Everyone needs to play this game.
