    • @yuenlucia5454
      @yuenlucia5454 Před 2 lety +1

      I do understand his humbleness, as in movie industries, there are REAL kungfu practitioner out there in Hong Kong work with Stephen Chow to design all the moves, although he himself is good at the move, there are real experts there behind the scene.

    • @Kijinn
      @Kijinn Před 2 lety

      While I agree that he's probably too humble, it's also easy to see in all of his movies, that his martial arts skills don't compare to actors who devoted more of their life to the sport. He doesn't have the range/diversity of moves, nor the precision of movement.
      Even Andy Lau, who's also not a devoted martial artist, gives a better looking performance. Or at least he did when he was young.
      Btw, I don't think Chow was denying himself as a kung fu "practitioner". I assume he meant to say "not a master".

      😏Nowadays movies/dramas It's over because nowadays no new actors/actresses that can acting, it's not about the script, even simple family dramas/movies in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s are better than nowadays dramas/movie . Why? Not because of the script or because the chinese mainland not allowed hongkong to make good movies/dramas .the main reason is the actors/actresses can't acting especially chinese mainland actors /actresses they overacting, no good director nowadays director also lazy the same like the actors/actresses .the video camera for filming from old video camera to digital, everything count. It's not just hongkong but all over the world, no more good movies/dramas. The only one country that i think improved a lot during all these years is singapore i am impressed with their acting skill, they did not impressed me at all couple years ago but recently their dramas i watched it's just simple family drama but the acting is what caught my attention. They really improved a lot. Of course still can't compare to old hongkong movies/dramas. But i don't watch new movies /dramas anymore only this singapore dramas i watched although not full eps or not 100% very focus, because i was working when my tv on so i stopped and watched for a while, they got my attention i am impressed with their acting skill, the korean movies/dramas are just terrible with nonsense story line, they can keep making drama that beg for sympathy from us, like cancer leukemia or whatever disease they can think, all their dramas like that, always begging for sympathy and too much drama.

For example, that naked child used for comedy in King of Comedy is simply no longer acceptable in today's post Me Too world, and neither is the scene where Chow is visibly playing with the child's private parts. You can thank cancel culture for most of that prohibition, and common sense/child protection for the rest of it... none of which has to do with China. But he totally skips over the evolution of Hong Kong action cinema in the 60s and 70s before Bruce Lee. And the hallmark of these films was that everyone had to do their own actions scenes which meant being athletic(there were no stunt people for the most part). The over the top violence and acrobatics was always present but it took a while for the effects to become more sophisticated. And all of these films are based on older forms of media such as books, legends and puppet theater from long before film.

      It's true that he skipped over that. Rather unfortunate, but at least it gave him more time for the aspects he covered. He probably returned from his Hong Kong trip with several hours of recorded material, but was only given that 1 hour time frame for talking about it. Including the movie clips.
      I'm not very fond of the 60s and 70s of HK cinema. It was an important time, but most of the action just doesn't look fancy or convincing enough. There are a lot of amazing movies from the latter half of the 70s, though.
      If you could name any HK movies from the 60s, that have impressive action scenes, I'd love to check them out.

      @@Kijinn I never really watched any of the 60s Shaw Brothers films until recently but when I did, the familiar tropes and formula was all there. This is why I made the statement. A few of those films were sent to international film festivals including "the Glorious Concubine" and "Come Drink With Me". That is why I said most of the major innovations of HK cinema was already developed in the 60s and the 70s and 80s were more about refinement. The films I most recommend that I actually am familiar with from the early 70s are Triple Irons(new One Armed Swordsman), Five Fingers of Death and Lady Kung Fu. The core issue still is that those actors who actually knew martial arts always made the best action sequences, even though most of them also were trained in Chinese Opera as the basis for the fight choreograhpy.

      Stephen was great movie star before the 1997 too, but his golden age was actually 2000’s, after HK’s return to China where he championed the world through Shaolin soccer and Kungfu Hustle. Why? Because China’s mainland’s massive market enabled him to do so. And although he doesn’t act anymore as he isn’t interested in acting anymore, he’s still great movie star as a director and champions China’s market every time he makes a movie.

      So Stephen Chow’s migration to mainland as a movie star might be sad for Hong Kong movie industry, but it also might be good for Stephen Chow himself as it opened up more opportunities and possibilities to him.

    Stephen Chow is by far my favorite Hong Kong actor and film maker. Besides the more well known movies, his Fight Back to School movies are great. Something people in the west may not know is Chow had ties to the triads (the Hong Kong version of the mafia), since it's pretty much impossible to make movies there without those relationships as the industry is run by the Triads, so a lot of the comedic violence he incorporates actually references stereotypical Hong Kong style gang violence. Also, in the movie God of Cookery, there are a lot of references to gang culture, which is probably lost on the western audience.

    Nowadays movies/dramas It's over because nowadays no new actors/actresses that can acting, it's not about the script, even simple family dramas/movies in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s are better than nowadays dramas/movie .
