Part 1 of a conference lecture given by Leonard Susskind on Holographic Cosmology.
The holographic principle provides an extraordinary new picture of quantum gravity and the universe. Ideas are gradually beginning to take shape on how concepts like holography (and other deep insights uncovered in the past two decades) may lead to new fundamental principles for cosmology. Undoubtedly new insights will emerge on long-standing fundamental issues in cosmology: the nature of the big-bang, the initial conditions and fate of the universe. However, these new approaches will most likely lead us in new directions and allow us to formulate the "right" questions. This informal workshop will bring together leading researchers working in cosmology, string theory and quantum gravity to exchange ideas on recent progress and discuss promising future directions. - Věda a technologie
Susskind is in a league of his own. His indefatigable enthusiasm for cosmology is infectious and the impress of his teachings and generosity of spirit has left an indelible impress not soon to be equaled. Thank you, Leonard.
Kim M. Clark, OD what the simultaneity is?
I think Leonard Susskind may be more intelligent than me.
I am actually almost sure of it.
If people will watch this video in the future to see Mr. Susskind, they will wonder if video cameras were very rare in the first part of the 21st century.
Amazing! Thank you for simplifying complex theories of the Universe.
This was enlightening and informative, thank you 🙏
Amazing! Love his dry humor!
He is giving a lecture to a class that has people in it that have contributed RULES on how to calculate the probability of an observer. There is so much brilliance in our times and we hardly hear about it. How cool.
Thank you for the video.
ive been listening to physicist after physicist not understanding a thing. but this guy allows me to understand it finally
I think the key in this shift does actually get down to the heart of "forcing it". It actually defines what humans are trying to achieve with physics. To force it not only in our favor but energy as well. To collect it. At best slow it down and torque more. We have more than enough space to store it. Why not!? We collect everything else. Perhaps if there is an owner of it they would appreciate all that we could give back. Not sure how that would go though. Either way it is a win win situation we have here.
Nice share.
I do find it quite interesting that not only can we not see past our current horizon...we can't see past BH horizons either. A very interesting analog.

I couldn't agree more.
Does the Everett interpretation of QM change something for the time of appearance of an observer?
+BatteryI agree it does make you think that
where did this lecture take place? anyone knows?
I'm completely lost from 18:24 forward. Where can I start to learn this?
Just ignore the adjectives. It will be easier then. If not, you need to study cosmology.
He is talking about inflation and the well known problem of counting probabilities and measuring spacetime consistently when every neighboring region in space keeps inflating exponentially after your own region has stopped doing so and they end up being the overwhelming term in all your calculations.
H and h are the Hubble factors of inflation of the region at large and the local universe from where you are measuring
@10:10 sure Lenny, but why gauge fixing? Gauge is a field concept. I think Arkani-Hamed and others are doing good work showing fields are not fundamental. I'll take a stab at suggesting more fundamental reality being topological degrees of freedom, as in geon theory, which aligns closer with amplituhedron methods, where gauges are not needed.
gotta love papa
Steve Scerbak, good for you...
What's with the subliminal shots ?
this is a great example of building the model which is pure illusion.
Zero and one are mutually exclusive in physical probability. So time is either there or not, and since cosmological scales are energetic, the rest just follow dimensional analysis where some mathematically true equations become physically irrelevant and others which survive the test of dimensional analysis become physically relevant in cosmological observations and predictions.
Can we get a better quality than 240p upload pls?

"If a quantum tree falls in a quantum forest and there's nobody there to observe it" assumes the the tree falls. I think the question is important enough to warrant rephrasing to eliminate unproven assumptions. My attempt would be, "If a forest is observed to contain a fallen tree, was the sound of a falling tree created by the tree coming to be in that location?" or something like that. We only have observations and logical inferences from those observations. Plus, all of Science is based on the presumption that observable, measureable reality is causally-consistent.
I just noticed an error. I refer to a "fallen tree". Maybe, "a tree that appears to have fallen"? Weeding out unstated assumptions is tricky.
Complimentarity of boundary. Quantum mechanics does not have an outside. The missing link between the outside and the inside of the boundary of a back hole, is undefined by the hologram or the square bubble in deSitter space (other theories). However I like Leonardo's holographic boundary where the information is stored. We know t=0 at the boundary, but space is for some reasons turned/squeezed into a film of hologram (perhaps related to the quantum field, outside as a compliment), perhaps defining what is inside.

I can't understand a single thing he said, I dunno why I watch these videos.

The Universe as a Golden Supercomputer
Claregate Metaphysics Group
Probability can be defined as the proportion of possible Universes in which a certain property holds given some other properties. e.g. For all the universes in which exist the Milky Way galaxy, the planet Earth, a casino, and a gambler who has the brain configured with the memory of just having rolled two dice. The proportion of Universes in which the pair of dice on the table will be snake-eyes will be 1/36 all things being equal.
One can calculate this as the sum of all histories of the Universe from a presumed unique big bang state.
So I don't see any conflict here with the observer being part of the system in quantum mechanics. Just that one could never calculate exactly such a big system only approximate it with heuristics. Just like no dice is exactly perfect.
I believe this is called the Many-World interpretation of quantum mechanics. I thought most physicists took this view. The "collapse of the wave function" with god-like observers interpretation is very old fashioned.

What's with the insane camera switching?
Obviously someone is extremely proud of having multiple camera viewpoints he/she can play with but each is set to a slightly different color temperature, and each 'flares' on start-up.even the volume level goes up and down as if someone is switching mics too.
The lecture is fascinating - but it gave me a headache to watch it.

It’s how ya look at.
Metaphysics is essentially philosophy.
All roads are paved with mathematics.
IMO...quantum physics has hit the proverbial brick wall.

If the information must be conserved, and myself (including my mental and body configuration and consciousness) is information, what happens to that information when we aren’t aware of ourselves (if you are not aware of yourself, it would mean some informationis has been lost, al least during that state lasts).
For example state of sleeping, being unconscious for any reason or, taking it to the limit, being dead.

Wow, you're calling for a paradigm shift in 2015. Recently (this is 2019) I was exposed to some anomalies of 'scientific fact'. The paradigm is not going to be, is this true, or that true... which created, and continues the flat earth movement? (Questions about the plan- et itself, or the firmament w/ the sun, moon and stars embedded in it...) It's going to be: If all that's true, then: Are we in a black hole? or Just where are we?

*sigh* I'm not a stupid man, but once he gets into the math, this stuff rapidly goes beyond my ability to follow....
Math is a tool. I took 2 years of calculus and differential equations and when I got my first physics book it was all word problems, the teacher said: “if you get the physics right and the number is wrong at the end, you get an A”...
Way to keep the Faradays away.

"How long it takes an observer to form?"
(1.)You would think that Stanford could afford an HD video camera... and this is pathetic. (2.)The 'bangers' seem to be getting restless and frustrated with their own tired fairy tale, very interesting....(3.)Also, if the universe is 1000 times bigger then the present visible portion (I agree on that) then the big bang could not have happened.
+oracleofottawa take his advice and LISTEN.
+oracleofottawa I'm glad you agree with some of it. Perhaps you should've given the lecture?
+oracleofottawa math on #3?
There is no pre set limit to inflation (commonly thought of the Big Bang, but that is incorrect). In my personal view, we should get rid of the idea of space being something to move into. I know it sounds weird, but by thinking of space as a physical object it gets easier to understand that space is just entangled energy that does not care about time and distance. It just does not interact with them. Time and distance are emergent properties of other energies interacting with space. Well, that is my personal thought. Nothing scientific here. Move on please.
Just Listen to how asinine this teachers logic thinking is..1-Cor 2:1-16.
+rebel oneal Did you just reference mythology in a science lecture?
