- How do Mexican people celebrate the famous holiday 5 de mayo? I've heard that 5 de mayo is a very popular holiday where people all around the world celebrate Mexcian traditions and customs. But how is 5 de mayo celebrated in Mexico?
Come with me and I'll show you what's going on in Mexico this cinco de mayo. I'm taking to the streets of Queretaro to show you what is really going on and how Mexican people in Mexico are spending the day.
I was surprised to find out that cinco de mayo is so popular for Americans when in Mexico, this is not one of our major holidays. It's an interesting piece of history and I wanted to tell you what cinco de mayo really is and where this tradition comes from.

Hi...some viewers might get confused about WHICH Napoleon did what in Mexico during.this time. The most well known was Napoleon the 1st. The Waterloo dude. However there were two other Napoleons related to the 1st who took power. I think it was Napoleon the 3rd that sent more troops to Mexico in the 1860s.
Jay Mo It was Napoleon III and he later abandoned Emperor Maximilian who was shot by firing squad in Queretaro. Maximilian could have escaped earlier on but did not.

Great video!! My daughter is a bartender and she is very busy working every Cinco de Mayo! 😂🍸🍺🍷🍹 I wish Americans appreciated Mexicans every day of the year. It is nice to see everybody happy and getting along during celebrations here in the US, whether the celebration is historically accurate or not.
Alas, the partiers are mostly not Mexicans.
The Mexican restaurants celebrate for their customers to make money.
In fact, we (Mexas) rarely go to Mexican restaurants. The food is insipid and we don't like it.
@@lucio.martinez aren't good Mexican restaurants over there?
@@LaKarencitaMX
No. Not in Florida.
You get good Mexican food in Texas and Califas---that's it.
Maybe Chicago, but I've not been there.
I just watched the parade in Puebla. It was incredible, absolutely massive.
I knew about the Battle in Puebla and about the alcohol marketing in the US, but that was about all. The story of the French wanting to join the confederates was very interesting. I never knew about all that! Thanks Karen!
Yeah, I've read about it.
The Confederates also wanted to take part of México's northern territory.
Actually ! It's New Year's Day * a lil bit of truth to end all the idealism of false tradition or culture shock
Its same here in the Philippines we celebrate like Flores de Mayo
Excellent video. So, I am one of these who try to explain to Mexicans and Americans that the I nor my family crossed the border, it crossed us in western Texas. As a Mexican-American, I was expected to be part of a Cinco de Mayo celebration. Yet, it was never a day that was part of our family culture. In my younger school years in LA, the teachers would force me to dance Mexican dance and be happy for the day. I'm glad that you brought up 1848 and a little bit of the history. That is part of the Chicano history that is not being told anymore. Thank you for doing that this video.
Thanks for watching the video. It's interesting to see that Cinco de Mayo is something that schools also celebrate.

Jajaja teachers forced you to dance at 5 of may, it would have been humiliating.
Man, no freedom back then?
Hahaha (j/k).
No es fácil la vida de un mexicano en Mexilandia.
😆 That intro was FUNNY.
I was searching your channel for a vlog about this earlier today, Too funny
We celebrate in Canada at my house. An excuse to bring in the spring and get outside for the first time with our friends. Shots of tequila or margaritas with tacos and guacamole. Just our way of expressing our love for Mexico.
Nah, your kidding.
Jajajajajaja ajá sí claro
Happy Cinco de Mayo🇲🇽🇲🇽🌮🌮
My understanding is that Cinco de Mayo in the US is analogous to St Patrick's Day. In the same way Irish-Americans use St Patty's Day to celebrate Irish pride and culture, Mexican-Americans use to celebrate Mexican pride and culture. However, like St Patty’s day, Cinco de Mayo has been morped into another drinking holiday for WASP Americans.
And most of them hate Mexicans, figure it out.
Thank you. Simple explanation 👍🏼
I (was born in and) grew up in the part of the United States that used to be part of Mexico. The population in that part of the U.S. looks very different than the population in the eastern U.S..
¡Karencita me encanta tus vídeos! They are some of my favorite. You always cover such interesting subjects that others don't. :)
Excellent history lesson and you touched on something that not even college students know. Napoleon appreciated the wealth of Mexico but underestimated its people and their desire not to be enslaved by foreigners. America sent a message to Mexico objecting to French soldiers on its soil because of the Monroe Doctrine and would invade after the Civil War. Mexico was in a no win situation and rose up against the French. I always felt Benito Juarez should have spared Maximilian’s life and sent him back to Europe.
Roosevelt looked to Mexico to make up for the lost production when 14 million Americans fought in WW2, so he wasn’t that honest. Small wonder that Mexicans are suspicious of foreigners. ( The soldiers in the red pants were called Zouaves and were the best in the army of France.) Great 👍 video!
Thank you for the details. I think the same way about Maximiliano. I didn't know that soldiers in red pants were the best in the army of France.
Love this real historical account.
Muchas gracias
I need a Sombrero like this lol
Jajajajaja el intro fue muy gracioso.
Fun video interesting. Your town is so beautiful so amsr.
Amor? (Love)
Gracias por tu video! Es verdad!!!
In the US It's just an excuse to party and drink cheap margaritas and 25 cent off Mexican beer
Same with St Paddy's day. The Yanks would throw a party over a fart if they could.
Karencita,
Love your videos!
One important fact that I feel is missing in the video is that in the United States during the Chicano Civil Rights movement of the 60's and 70's, people within the Chicano community began to identify with the "underdog" theme, and the struggle against colonialism that are parts of the larger story of Cinco de Mayo, and the Battle of Puebla. Unfortunately, by the 1980's this holiday became very co-opted by commercial interests.
Thank you very much
I am so glad I watched this video!! I began planning an event for my fourth grade class and began research! I have several Hispanic students, so I desired to be mindful of their culture! I am sooo glad you shared this! We had a Fiesta during Hispanic Heritage month, and I'd considered a parade. However, the insight you provided was so much more valuable. Relating the students to their peers and study of the relationship of the holiday to the Civil War will be absolutely fascinating! Thank you for shining a light on my ignorance!!
It's all about beer, tacos and the party at the bar in the USA. But yes it is claimed as the Independence Day of mexico. Thanks for clearing this up.
What a stupid people at USA, isn't it?
Really l love your videos because I study in English
I love how your videos have some comedy and characters acting out skits, very entertaining. The history background was clearly explained, thank you. I honestly need to do my history research to learn more on the subject. Now I’m scratching my head, if the Mexicans are not celebrating it like us, then what the hell are we so excited about? Now that I recently visited Queretaro and SMA, I am ready to take your Spanish course. I definitely need to learn more Spanish!
Did you know?
We, Mexican-Americans, appreciate and love it when non-Mex-Americans, speak Spanish.
How did you like Querétaro and San Miguel? I hope you enjoyed it. And yes, I would be very happy to meet you in one of my courses 🙂
@@LaKarencitaMX We stayed 3 days in QRO and 3 Days in SMA and loved every minute. Our stay at the Apapacho Hotel in Guadiana (SMA) was amazing. On their rooftop bar we could see La Parroquia while having breakfast and we watched fireworks every night with a glass of wine. The parks were quiet, clean and the people were the best part, everyone was so friendly. We had a tour guide show us both cities on different days so we can see all the neighborhoods and real estate. QRO had the best night entertainment at the Plaza. It was such a pleasure to see how family oriented everyone is. The people in the plaza were generational and together; grandparents with their kids and their grandchildren, everywhere. It was refreshing and amazing. Here in California, most kids don’t want to be seen with their parents in public, especially where there is gatherings and entertainment. My wife and I felt so safe, the entire trip day or night. We could definitely call Mexico our retirement home in the near future, but it probably won’t be in these cities. I will have my 81 year old mom living with us and she wants her last years to be a coastal area (what mama wants, mama gets :)). So, on our next trip, we will be searching for a place that will suit her and my Great Dane (5 yr old dog). We are open to suggestions.
Here in the USA 🇺🇸 people celebrate drinking beer 🍺 and eating Mexican food 🥘
Nice video!
That's something I didn't know
Happy cinco de mayo
I learned a lot from this video. I'm in my mid 70s, thinking about applying for residency in Mexico, and wishing I had done it 10 years ago. I live in Las Vegas, Nevada, where a lot of tourists don't realize that they're visiting The Meadows, Nevada. (A lot of locals do know that).
There are two sides to Cinco de Mayo here. Of course, there are huge parties and events in the casino areas. But also, Las Vegas is 28% Hispanic. Hispanic/Latino/Latina children are the largest group in the County school system. So, in addition to the big Cinco de Mayo parties downtown and on the Strip, the County put on a Cinco de Mayo celebration at a park in the most heavily Hispanic neighborhood in the County. That's the one I went to. (I'm Northern Irish, by the way, born in Belfast). It was a huge event. I got there at 4:30, half an hour after it started, and there wasn't a parking spot within a half mile of the park. By the time I left, you probably would have had to catch a bus from your parking spot to the park. It was truly a community celebration of enormous pride in heritage. The food was awesome (and genuine), and the music was awesome (and genuine). I am so glad I went.
Wow. I bet it must fun. I like parties and celebrations. Some foreigners told me it's inevitable weird to see that there's no celebrations now that they're in Mexico even though they know why. I understand
I expected you won't get disappointed once you come to México because we don't celebrate that date.
Well done

yo prque no me quiero poner peda, esa frase estuvo chida ,cuidese
I was in Cancun last year for Cinco de mayo, and they didn't really celebrate it there either lol
Haha thanks
Maybe we should switch to celebrating in September
It’s like the Irish Americans they celebrate saint patricks day just to party but they dnt realize it’s a religious holiday LOL.
To us in the United States, Cinco de Mayo is just a fun holiday where we celebrate the heritage of our friends and neighbors who happen to be Mexican. I’ll be celebrating by making fajitas later tonight!
BTW, I’m aware that there are much more important days on the Mexican calendar, but we like to have fun.
Fajitas is not Mexican is Tex mex
Fajitas is not a Mexican dish, is American. Do you like to troll mexicans with this, isn't?
@@gustavoperez5480 I don’t know how you think I’m trolling you. Fajitas did come from Texas, and they were made popular by the Mexican community there. How is that bad?
No me quiero poner peda 🥳😭😂😂
Cuantos aztecas.
instead of saying how to celebrate like a Mexican, it would be how to celebrate like a person from Puebla, most of the Mexican Republic does not celebrate May 5th or even make a big fuss about that day like the US people do
Hola! Gracias!
Si
No fireworks here in San Miguel de Allende. Everything here is worthy of fireworks... Not Cinco due Mayo.
I would have good food..good drink.👍
Mexico does celebrate Cinco de Mayo just not all of Mexico from my understanding it’s more celebrated in the state of Puebla
Yes. They do a huge parade in Puebla and that's it
I'm Mexican, born in Mexico and I can tell you we could not care less, I mean we don't give a rat's behind about celebrating 5 de Mayo. It isn't Mexican independence day.
I'm always telling people that 5 de Mayo is a racist holiday. i hate how they play on the stereotypes placed on my Mexican heritage. I wish we could stop "celebrating" here in the US.
Yep. Chicanos here in Cali, some of my family included, love to rub the "Hey I'm Mexican" in your face. They take it too far. Real Mexicans living in Mexico are completely different.
As an Irish person whose blood pressure skyrockets on St. Patrick's Day, I think I can understand a little of how you feel. (You know what's a popular drink in Galway on St. Patrick's Day? Milkshakes. Try telling that to people ordering an "Irish Car Bomb" to get drunk on, here in the US)
I always assure people it isn't. 😂
Unless your from Puebla a real Mexican doesn’t do crap for cinco de Mayo
US French bashing typical
us Mexicans We don’t celebrate cinco de mayo, but white people do celebrate it
Le hubieran puesto subtítulos en español, no gustar porque está en inglés 😡
If the French had won the battle and settled you might be teaching French instead of Spanish🙂
5 of may is and insult for mexican that know history. 5 of may was the beginning of robbery from the US (America is a continent) to mexico, after that it was they took more than half of mexican territory, and Zaragoza was born in Texas, so for mexican is and insult to celebrate 5 of may when what we win against French was just not let them take mexico for the French to give it to the States
Real Mexicans don’t celebrate 5 De Mayo lol
they eat beans.
Theres nothing wrong with Mexico.. The problem is Americans will always look for any reason to get drunk..
