    I bought the Rode mic about a month or so ago after having my older cheap mic crap out on me. I honestly love the hell out of this thing. It works perfectly fine for discord and I just applied filters directly in streamlabs so it sounds perfect on stream. Honestly, it's the best I've ever sounded.
    But I don't have much to compare it to, so your mileage may vary.

    Great video and I very much agree with your conclusion.
    I noticed two things, though:
    I think you're forgetting the Elgato Wave's ClipGuard, which can replace a compressor for a lot of streamers and having it built-into the hardware at this price point is at least a little special.
    And when I googled what the Exciter and Big Bottom things to, I found out that they are not EQ. Neither boosts it's targeted frequencies like an EQ would, they add harmonics to them. Which is probably one of the reasons they are so subtle.

    • @PastelSpellTV
      @PastelSpellTV Před 3 lety

      @@Artbug this doesn't work if you want to use the wavelink (virtual mixer) software (which lets be honest is WHY you buy a wave). Your entire mix is one source in OBS. If I added a noise gate, it would also be gating soft game sounds, etc. If I add the mic into OBS on its own and gate it, I can't use it in the mixer. We NEED a noise gate filter in app.

      @@FaithZe yeah but then you cant monitor your overall audio balance. I'm aware there's workarounds - none of them are good, and defeat the purpose of the mic. • @AnnaVannieuwenhuyse
    @AnnaVannieuwenhuyse Před 3 lety +4

  • @oven2066
    @oven2066 Před 3 lety +3

    I just love having physical faders though. Software is great, but if you want to change shit up on the fly while streaming or gaming, it's so much easier and more intuitive to use an actual physical fader than to tab out and tinker with the mouse. Would be great if Elgato could release that. Actual faders with virtual audio cables/routing built in, so you can buy it separately to the Wave, but also that ties in with Wave Link

  • @JonRatzlaff
    @JonRatzlaff Před 3 lety +1

    It’s the noise gate. I’ve had this issue with my Rodecaster Pro since day 1. After many calls with Rode they basically said that’s just how it operates and that noise gate can sometimes conflict with the limiter or other settings. I was very disappointed in the noise gate feature and the fact that over the years it hasn’t been fixed.

    After a decade of cheap mics I finally bought the regular Rode NT USB mic years ago and I love the sound quality. It's been a great mic for vocal recording or recording my own samples. And with a simple noise gate in OBS for streaming I've never been happier. I think the only thing I would have done differently is gone with the XLR version. One of my favorite things on mics like this one is the ability to hear myself with the fader knob that changes the mix that gets sent to the headphones, and not have to do it with software so there's no latency. Which from what I can see is missing from the NT Mini. Can just turn a knob and hear what's going on in the other room or more easily hear someone knocking without having to take off my headphones mid-game.

    FWIW - I’ve owned the Wave 3 since day 1. There are known issues within the software that cause issues on some apps.
    In discord for example, I sometimes get told my voice is “like a robot” by my teammates. The only fix is unplug and replug to where you miss all your audio until it resets.
    The other small issue is to think if you sometimes use your system without the mic. For example, I may watch videos with my speakers. Well, the audio always defaults to those software inputs. You need to manually go change the output to your speakers
    If you close a web browser after fixing, it will do it over again.
    Some small things, but they add up

Only downside is being able to mute the faders through the goxlr unless you do hotkeys. That way you can adjust the volume for your headphones and it be set on stream.. Hopefully they recognize the need for the updates to the software and get it on par with Elgato's but for now I'll use the RodeCaster with the Elgato Software and my Stream deck, and keep an eye on Rode's updates.

    Your shotgun microphone sounds great, Could shotgun microphones by use for maybe Vr Content as built in Vr headset mics sound terrible. Also i wish GoXLR software was as fresh & new feeling as the Wave software.

    since you can use the WaveLink software with most mics, and the NT USB Mini is cheaper than the Wave 3. It makes sense to just get the NT USB Mini and use it with the WaveLink software. best of both worlds then, affordable good usb mic + good software

    Recommend the VB-Audio VoiceMeeter Potato software for 3+ virtual input outputs sub mix features, multi track record. I think it helps almost any quality mic sound great.

    The exciter type circuit had been a secret of the music industry since the 70s. These used to be proprietary and studios were charged thousands of unadjusted dollars per hour to use them. Before many things migrated to plug-ins and software, these were boxes made by BBE, Aphex, and all the knock-offs. These days, it lives in plug-ins and also stomp boxes from TC-Helicon called Adaptive Eq. Done tastefully, it sounds like a veil has been lifted from ther speakers. Taken to an extreme, it sounds shrill and the midrange sounds sucked out.

    I know it is a *very* niche market, but I would love to see someone produce that software for Linux. I should be able to do much of the audio routing and sub-mixing with existing tools, but they can be complicated. It also doesn't solve the problem with external mic control (like the LED lights) and such. But with more and more games running on Linux, and stability getting better and better every day, there's a huge amount of potential. Plus, I'm selfish as a Linux user; I love my outboard analog audio gear, but having a simple and portable solution would be super-nice.

    To be fair as far as i can tell all these extra things do now is add ease of use. If you are willing to spend some time learning your gear and learning obs and a few choice plugins you can do everything so easily. Virtual audio cables plus the audio monitor plugin for obs does basically the same thing as the elgato wave software (apart from the ratio lock) and you can put all your eq stuff in obs anyway and have way more control than the few options in the rode app. I know some people find ease of use to be worth more than customisation but I am not one of this people. To me even if I had an elgato wave i would probably not use the software because my audio monitor plugin setup lets me do the same thing from inside obs, and i dont have the extra controls for things i dont need a sub mix for like my mic

    My son has the Rode NT-USB rather than the mini. Looking at the FAQ for Rode Connect, Rode state that it for the mini only as it relies on the internal digit processing of the mini for critical aspects of the software. They do however state that expanding support for other Rode mics in the future is a potential feature. He's away this weekend so I can't ask him to try and see whether Connect *can* interface to the NT-USB but I'll let him know of the existence of this software so he can at least try it (he's been a bit disappointed about the lack of control he can get over of the NT-USB).
