Buddha’s first sermon, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, was preached to the five ascetics at the Deer Park near Benares on an Esala poya day, marking the start of his public ministry. Significant events associated with this day include the conception of the Bodhisatta in Queen Maya’s womb, his Great Renunciation, the performance of the Twin Miracle (yamaka-patihariya), and his first preaching of the Abhidhamma in the Tavatimsa heaven.
Esala poya holds special importance in Sri Lanka due to the first ordination of a Sri Lankan, Prince Arittha, the nephew of the king, who entered the Order at Anuradhapura under Arahant Mahinda following the introduction of Buddhism. This day also saw the laying of the foundation for the renowned dagoba, the Mahastupa or the Ruwanvelisaya, and the enshrinement of relics by King Dutugemunu. The combination of these events has led Sinhala Buddhists to ceremonially observe Esala poya by holding festivals throughout the island, with the internationally famous Kandy Esala Perahera taking a prominent place.
Esala poya is also significant for another ritual of Sri Lankan Buddhists: the annual rains retreat of the monks, ‘Vas’, which begins on the day following the Esala full moon. Monks who failed to commence the normal Vas on the day following Esala poya can enter the ‘late Vas’ on the next poya day, Nikini (August).
