    Great St. Louis memories here. My buddy and I entered the first Fantasy Coachworks "Run for the Sun Road Rally" in 1984 (I think), I was the driver, he was the navigator. They gave us a route around STL with various stops and questions that you had to answer at each stop. Lots of cool sports cars in the rally, and here we are in my four-door Buick. Most of the pack took off and was trying to get to each location as fast as they could. But my buddy and I quickly figured out the winner would be whoever answered the most questions right. So we took our time and tried to do that. I distinctly remember one of the stops was a Pantera's Pizza out in Maryland Heights or St. Charles, and the question asked how many hot air balloons were pictured on one wall of the restaurant, so we went in and counted them. We ran the route and finally came to the end of the run at Laclede's Landing (STL riverfront tourist area). We were one of the last, if not the last, ones to arrive. Turned in our sheet, and after all the scores were tallied...we WON the race, because we had the most correct answers of anybody. That was a shocker for both me and my buddy, and probably Jim Smoot too, but he was very nice about it and gave us the award, which is still buried somewhere in my basement. And that's how the first Fantasy Coachworks "Run for the Sun Road Rally" was won by two nerdy teenagers in a blue 1980 Buick Skylark with houndstooth seats.

      @@jimsmoot2985 You know what is funny. I remember the custom vans back in the "good old days" at your shop. Really neat vans (and cars, and trucks). About 13 years ago I became a church van driver for our church on Barracksview, just down from Dave Sinclair Ford. Doing it still today. Polar opposite vehicles...just typical 15 passenger vans with lots of "quirks and features", lol. That teenage kid in the race never would have thought I'd be doing this, yet wouldn't trade this ministry or the people I've met for anything. Turns out vans have played a major role in BOTH our lives.

    • @earlbrown
      @earlbrown Před měsícem

      I installed car audio in quite a few of those back in the 90's. God they were awful.
      Wood inserts screwed into the plastic dashes with deck screws, lots of stickers and rope lights. It's hard to describe just how tacky those 'custom' cars were. And that's during the tail end of the 80's.
      For those that's never seen one of those cars, trucks, or vans in real life, it's pretty much impossible to describe just how horrible that ''custom'' work was.
      On the upside, I made about 4X the money on repairing faulty wiring from them as I did on the stereo work I was there for. So I didn't hate seeing them show up.

    You all have to do a follow up with Jim at some point, he has more stories than this. I used to hang with some younger guys that worked for him in the fat and lean years and they had a crazy ride. Women in the back room with his young employees doing god knows what people did back in the 80s. If I remember correctly Jim and his brother did the Cannonball too. There was a big circle of guys around St. Louis that did it. Some guys that lived down the street from me, in Fenton, did it in a Lotus Esprit and the Fantasy guys did it in that orange van. We all used the same mechanic, The Sports Car Centre. I had a Datsun 510, a Mazda B2000 lowrider and eventually a Saab 900 Turbo. I think that Fiero in the picture was my friends. He eventually took all of the springs out of it and drove around on the bumpstops. He lived right by where I went to High School, Lindbergh HS in Sunset Hills MO.

    As a native Saint Louisan, can confirm these guys were all over the place in their heyday. The vehicles they built looked positively stupid in period, but we're talking about an era where Chrysler K-cars sold like hotcakes, so it's hard to fault Jim for that. He knew his market and catered to it flawlessly. Loved the reference to Pantera's Pizza and the owners' stable of Panteras. Their north county location was across the street from our store and a Pantera was generally backed in to the parking space in front of the door every weekend night.
