Bathing Guinea Pigs: Information, Products and Handy Tips!

- How I bath my piggies, the products I use and recommend and helpful advice about bathing guinea pigs in general!
Many owners choose not to bath their piggies, this is perfectly fine - they do not enjoy the experience and many short haired breeds are perfectly capable of keeping themselves clean. However, longer hair can become dirty easily and bathing can help keep the hair and skin in a good clean condition, especially around the butt area! I also find it useful for removing any matts (tangles in the hair) which might have developed unnoticed. Bathing is also useful to rid the hair of dead parasites after treatment and for treating any skin conditions.
WHAT YOU NEED: Shampoo, towels, a bath/sink/washing up bowl, a cup or something similar to help pour water over the piggie.
THE WATER: Should be luke warm, no deeper then 2 inches or about 5cm
THE SHAMPOO: Always use one formulated for guinea pigs. Even then, some "guinea pig shampoos" can contain controversial ingredients. KEEPING STRESS LEVELS DOWN: Guinea pigs usually hate being in the water and will often struggle, making things harder for you. Try relaxing them by pausing and taking things slower, or letting them sit with their front paws out of the water (this helps a lot with my piggies). If they will not stay calm (like Sprite) you may have to try and get it over with quickly! Remember to always completely wash out the shampoo though. It may also help to wash them in the bath, that way they cannot see an escape route and will give up trying to jump out. I wouldn't recommend washing them in the sink, especially if there is no counter, piggies can leap unexpectedly which could be fatal for them if they fall onto the floor.
DRYING: Pigs kept outside should be completely dry before being returned to their hutch. Indoor piggies can go back to their cage semi dry. Keep their surroundings warm for them by turning up the heating to avoid them catching a chill from being damp. Rub them with a towel to get most of the water off - they might enjoy this, my piggies seem to! Vibrating is normal, they do this because they are nervous and didn't like the bath, not because they are cold. You can use a hair dryer, coldest and gentlest setting, not too close to their skin or face.

If a female has yellow stains on her bottom is that normal because my fleece isn’t wicked yet and I’m guessing maybe she sat in it so I’m trying to clean it to prevent an infection of any sort

This video is probably my favorite ever, it was instructive and hilariously cute all in one. Lola was so fuzzy when she started to dry and it was the cutest ever. They all are absolutely gorgeous piggies.

I washed mine outside in the summer I used to have three and watching this I used to have a long haired much like two of your ones and I used to go gentle with her she used to sprawl her legs out eventually and got used to having baths in the summer I only ever washed them when it was summer but they had plenty of grooms. Which I read is a great way to spend time with your guinea pig and its a good way to get them used to their owner. I always towel dried them after and gave them a brush

I asked my vet (exotics vet) about bathing and he said only if absolutely needed (like if they had fleas or got extremely dirty) otherwise a non-scented baby wipe would be enough. I love how gentle you are with the bathing and that you emphasized that they shouldn't be bathed too much.
Great advice :) Bathing often isn't necessary for short haired breeds, I find it useful especially for Annie's long hair, even though she doesn't like the experience she always seems much happier after a bath and a trim! :)
Hi the little brown guinipig in the litter tray tray can really stand it's grownd nose peckering so funny . Lola gets me upset as she is like one iv just lost.it nice to see them well looked after and probably wrinced.great show and advise.piggies are the best.

my guinea pig seems to enjoy his bath as long as I'm holding him in some way. my hand has to at least be under his belly, or else he'll get skiddish about it. all of your piggies are so cute

I am using a hair dryer with a large diffuser, resting on its side on the ground on lukewarm / middle heat - and use my hands abundantly through my guinea pigs' hair, so I can feel the temperature. It has to be slightly warmer than skin temperature, as we know for ourselves: it can quickly feel cold even at around-skin temperature when we are wet. Anyway, your hands will guide you for maximum comfort for your little One :) But it's worth making sure that they are totally dry quickly after the bath. This, as much from my own intuition as on my vet's recommendation.

One of my piggies Suzie loves a bath, she would actually sit there all day if she could :) I use gorgeous guineas posh & go on her as she has long hair. Ive recently rescued 2 other girls. Maisie is smooth coated & is still nervous so Im not bathing her yet as she looks clean. Our other newbie Daisy had a lot of problems when we got her, but thankfully now has fully recovered. Just has dry patches of skin left from the mites so I have ordered gorgeous guineas manuka & neem shampoo & coconeem melt. Going to bath her today, so hope she likes it. Thankyou for your video...it was so cute :)
Yes they can if they get cold and wet at the same time, I had heated up my bathroom to keep them warm so they were fine :) I also dried them with towels and left them in the warm room until they were almost completely dry and ready to go back to their cage :)

Great video piggies and cage look so lovely and clean! They all have such beautiful hair! i went over the piggies with the hair dryer last time they didnt seem to mind.. i think coco even enjoyed it lol! their hair takes sooo long to dry its really thick! ! twinkle is like a little dog shaking gettin me soaked lol. but the gorgeous guineas shampoo posh n go is amazing for long hair their hair was soo shiny! xx
