Just returned from my first visit to Bamberg two weeks ago. LOVE IT! Rauchbier at the Schlenkerla is now in my top-5 beer experiences in Germany (I take people on beer tasting trips). Wunderschone Stadt!

I was born and raised in Bamberg until I married and moved to the USA . Bamberg is in my blood and will always be there . sorry I can not find anything bad about my hometown . Make a local friend and let them show you all the hidden beautiful things other than the historical part which is wonderful including all the legends . It is a very romantic city and I lived the romance with great formal balls , carnival "fasching" , the " famous bamberg symphony " teaching children about classical music , Walks along the river "regnitz " for miles to end up in the small town of "Bug" to stop for coffee , food , wine or beer .... walking the street at night with lighted hills around you , castle and churches and the sound of the river beside you . Stop for a great glass of "Franconian Wine " or a mug " Stein of famous Smoked Beer from the Schlenkerla " It is a city for romance and love ! I think I have "Heimweh " homesick .... Thank you for showing the Video !

I lived in Bamberg as an army brat way back in the mid 60s when the army base was there. It really needed a sprucing up back then. Went back in 92. Base was still there. Everything looked better. It looks like its about the same now as in 92. Now..as an adult, I appreciate Bamberg like never before. It is one of the best places in all of Germany and if I were to relocate back to Germany, I would definitely want to live in Bamberg.

Lived there 6 years in the military. The food is amazing!! Beer and bars are great. Everyone is frendly and most places speak English. It's amazing. This is truly one of the places in life that you say I could live here if I had to go some place else.

As someone living in Bamberg, this video makes me smile and a bit nostalgic, because Walter is discribing a Bamberg, which is more and more vanishing, due to an extreme increase in tourist numbers.
Bamberg is beautiful, sometimes a bit to much - So you have to be aware that you have to share Walters beloved (and mainly consumed by tourist...) smoke beer, Klein Venedig, the Sandstraße and the "most beautiful city hall" with far over 7 Million other tourists per year. This in a quite small town of only about 76.000 citizens, mainly living outside of the old town, due to the fact, that almost every house there has been transformed in some sort of tourist accomodation within the last years. But it's by far not enough for the always increasing numbers of tourists ! So yes, accomodation within and outside the old town, even in the whole county of Bamberg is very scarse, and you have to do your reservations extremely early, especially if you plan a visit between Eeaster and October or around Christmas - the town will be completely packed with tourists, not only at weekends and by far not only by German tourists - in fact there's a remarkable increase of Chinese, Japanese, Eastern and Southern European and especially American tourists, within the last four or five years!
And no, in the meanwhile a lot of locals get more and more annoyed by the sheer masses of tourists and start avoiding most touristic areas or getting in too much contact with tourists. So it's gone by fare more difficult to get in contact with locals, than 5 or 10 years ago...
Fortunately Bamberg has a huge University, and therfore a lot of Students too - They are mostly not real locals, living and studing within the town only for a few years, but they've got a far more higher tolerance for tourist masses, than ordinary Bambergians do. So, there is still a chance to get in contact with some inhabitants of the town - And yes, it's always a nice and very welcome idea to spend one or two beers to your "hosts" - due to the tourist boom, prices and rents have increased a lot, so talking and drinking with tourists has become a quite costly "hobby" for most locals and especialy students...

The walk up to the Altenburg gives you a fantastic view of the town. It’s fairly straightforward, but can be strenuous. Take your time and enjoy the moment knowing that in addition to wonderful views from the top, one can purchase a life-sustaining beer. There is an excellent, albeit pricey restaurant at the castle. We used to take the walk down the backside of the hill into Wildensorg to have lunch. Post-Covid the restaurant is only open for dinner, but one can take a bus back into Bamberg.

My parents lived and married there, I never lived in this town, but we have visited it so often I knew where every picture you showed came from. This place is just so incredibly beautiful and romantic!
My top suggestion if you decide to go to Bamberg: Go to the "Spezi" or "Wilde Rose" Keller, it's those beer gardens on top of the hills. Going there on a warm summer evening is just the most enjoyable thing there is!

every time we went there the Service was good, we brought our own Food in a Picnic Basket and ordered the Beer and enjoyed the view and tranquility. Since I knew that most of the hillside is / was former Storage Cellars for the old Breweries , the Beer tasted even better- I am a former Beer Brewer from "Schlenkerla", one of the oldest Smoke Beer Breweries in Bamberg (1678)..

Although Bamberg, at one time, had more breweries per capita than any other other city, there is more to that town than Rauchbier and Biergardens. I did not see anybody mention the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, which has world-renowned quality. Also, during the summer you may enjoy outdoor serenades in the beautiful Rose Garden overlooking the city by night (I used to love attending those performances when I lived there). -- Another place to visit is the beautiful Schloss Weissenstein in Pommersfelden, a barocque jewel, a short car trip outside Bamberg. It, too, offers classical concerts as part of its music academy during the summer.

Mostly German tourists? There are like millions of Asian and American tourists everywhere you go in the centre :D
And I think there are tons of things to do in Bbg...theatres, symphony, serenades f.e. in Rose garden or Seehof Castle, many small museums, hiking tours, etc...But of course it's quite small and consequently there are less sights than f.e. in Munich...:)
    And for the Rauchbier-lovers:
    - If the weather is nice: Go to a supermarket, take a bottle to a place you like (f.e. the canal), drink it there, much more relaxed,...
    - If you're really so keen on visiting Schlenkerla, go there at f.e. 2 pm on Tuesday and not at 5 pm on Saturday
    - Try other brands of frankonian beer such as Huppendorfer, Mahr's, Fässla, Wagner, St.Erhard or Trunk (Vierzehnheiligen), to name but a few...

    some more things to enjoy:
    1. The best Schäuferla (traditional crust roast) for me is found at Mahr's Bräu. Their beer is amazing too and the pub is very cosy.
    2. Visit Altenburg. Its a small castle two kilometers from the town hall. There is a tower you can climb which gives you a phenomenal view over the surroundings.
    3. Walk near the river Riegnitz to the south and visit the Theresienhain and Luisenhain (park areas). They are located on the half-island of Bamberg.
    4. If you fancy italian food, go to Salino. Ichi-San for sushi/japanese.
    5. The Bambados has both a nice swimming area (suited for kids too) and a great sauna area (18+ by law). Points on sauna culture: no clothes (trunks, swim suits etc.) allowed. In the area you can walk around in your bathrobe or towel (can be rent). Inside the sauna you are expected to sit on you towel. Your skin should not touch the wood. If you do not feel comfortable sitting there naked, it is no problem to cover your private parts with a towel.

The food even if from a food stand, shopping in Hertie Square and seeing the dancers come out of the huge clock when it's on the hour, the rose garden when it's in bloom. You could walk anywhere and find something amazing to see and have that feeling you're transported back in time. Lots of religious statues and the architecture of the old buildings are breathtaking! The accordion busses were also fun to ride! Have you visited Idar-Oberstein? I'll have to check your videos. I miss Germany!!, especially Bamberg!

    1. I love that it’s not international touristy, I was actually searching for not-very-English speaking midieval towns (we have googke translateat our fingertips nowadays so all’s good!) and you summed it up beautifully when you mimicked foreign tourists 😂 and 2. The whole town’s a museum!!! I see no negatives to visit at all - just positives PLUS there are outdoor concerts and a symphony according to some commentsI 3. I am not a big meat eater BUT I will try pretty much anything authentic - which this town has! I wonder how it is during winter 🤔 and IF 1 stays a bit further from the historic town - is it walkeable and is there public transport?

I visited Bamberg in September so was pleasantly surprised to see this video pop up. It's interesting to hear your views about this town as it's not especially well-known (compared to Rothenberg and Nuremberg).
My visit was part of a touring holiday, so only a 4 - 5 hour excursion but a favourite as this is a walkable town (though cobbly on the way to Domberg) that, as you mentioned, isn't overly touristy. The views from the top of the town are lovely.
I wandered into the Upper Parish/ Obere Pfarre for some quiet time and was surprised at the interior as it's rather plain on the outside.

On a side-note: Most of the time you can see some of the central buildings of the arts and humanities of the Bamberg university in this video.
The flat building right behind Marc is he seat of the department of geography (it was build as a slaughterhouse). The building to the left with the tree is the library for history, archaeology and geography (the TB5). And the big building to the right (the Hochzeitshaus) is the seat of the history department. There you literally learn and live inside of history.
Most of the buildings of arts and humanities are located in the old town. Between classes you don't walk over the campus, you walk through this beautiful town with its breweries, cafes and annoyingly slow tourists. I miss it. Even those tourists.

Many young Germans speak English, they were taught at an early age and may not be quick to use it, but try a little harder, and you'll find yourself making new friends. I was in the Army there in the 80s. It was some of the most memorable times of my life.

Is there a way you could do a video on the Kaserne (Warner Barracks) that was there? I'm sure many people who were stationed there would love to see how it looks now, no matter how desolate. Thanks...love your videos💗

So I live in Bamberg and I think you haven't seen everything yet! :) We have a really great orchester and theatre here, especially the E.T.A. Hoffmann Theater! Also, have you ever been to the Hain or Erba? They are perfect for nature loving people. (2 parks, one next to Park and Ride and the other is an island on the river next to Gaustadt.)
And if you're more interested in history and culture, you should look a bit around Bamberg. Like small Villages (Memmelsdorf, Lisberg, etc.) because there are many castles and other stuff around them.
Enjoy your future stays here! :)

I've visited Bamberg under your recommendation! Didn't stay for the night tough, I've slept in Wurtzburg and it was a really easy drive. Great Rauchbier, lovely town, one full day was enough to walk around everywhere. The big church uphill (can't remember if it was the cathedral) was closed for tourists. I've been in the exact sidewalk by the river you are now, lovely houses with porch by the water!

I was stationed in Bamberg during the mid 80's . I am now disabled and seldom leave the house. One of the things I regret most in life is that I never got to go back to Bamberg or the surrounding cities and towns. It was such a great experience for me.
Though I was just 19- 20 years old and didn't know how to truly appreciate where I was. I do know it was a different time in the 1980's and their were quite a lot of the local population who really did not like us . Or like that we were there anyway.
But for the most part the local population was warm and treated us always as welcomed guests.

Bamberg has been a garrison town since Kaiser Wilhelm. The U.S. Army had a base almost in the middle of town from after WWII till just a few years ago. With there having been a about a dozen U.S. Army bases around Franken up until the mid 2000s, Bambergers are pretty accustomed to Americans and English language speakers. So I wouldn't say they aren't set up for foreigners, more that visitors seem to fall in love with the region so much that they want to learn the area and language. And the locals want to teach you. I noticed an attitude shift when I left Bamberg for a base further west. Whereas "Franks" helped me learn German, in Kaiserslautern, many spoke english English almost out of rudeness. Many Rheinländers used English with me, I felt, so I would get my answer quickly and leave them alone.

Having weisswurst is appr. as traditional in Bamberg as it is in - well, Paris, Rome, Moscow, on the moon?
Weisswurst is a Munich thing, well, it might extend to southern bavaria, but at least outside of there it is absolutely uncommon. You'll find it in butcheries, since in G. you tend to find nearly everything that falls in the wurst category. But, ntl.: average consumption of weisswurst per person is probably higher in NYC than Bamberg (non-residents uncounted).

    • @medowucha
      @medowucha Před 6 lety +4

Rubbish! Weisswurst is JUST a bavarian thing. NOT a traditional FRANCONIAN thing. If Mr. Wolters gets in in Bamberg, then its set out for tourists, out of convenience. BUT the Nurnbergian or Franconian Bratwurst is more common .. and also, looks almost identical ..

    • @ulrichlehnhardt4293
      @ulrichlehnhardt4293 Před 6 lety +1

you know.. it is like saying Pizza is ONLY eaten in Napoli... good things find their way to other places and NOW you can have Weisswurst in Munich, in Bamberg, in Suttgart and even in Berlin...and it is for sure easier to find a Weisswurst in Bamberg than to find one in New York, so get over it...
