Kyo's vocals are without doubt the most versatile and dinamic vocal range of all the bands I know from every genre, Dir en grey is probably my favorite band... I have been requesting Ne Obliviscaris or Chtonic - Takao would be interesting too!!
DIR EN GREY has a couple of weird Music Videos but they have quite a lot of normal ones too, the weirder ones usually convey a deeper message through their visual which are almost impossible to understand without knowing the lyrics. The obscure video was about abortion and so the video was kind of meant to un glorify sex.
Everyone is right when they say Dir en grey is very diverse in what they have to offer. I know you said they're not your thing, but give them a listen on your own time. they've got a tooon of songs to choose from. I mean they've been around for almost 20 years, and really more than that if you count the whole band had another group before that except the bassist Toshiya.
"Dozing Green" or "Vinushka" should have been a better choice if you are not a fan of the growl part. And as you seems to like SiM, try "Amy" by SiM. You can also try Radwimps - "Jikkyou Chukei" ( compared to DeG or SiM, it's calm, really calm )
Thank you for checking them out. I too at first didn't like them, but as I kept listening to more and more of their songs, it grew on me. Plus I like Shinya's drumming.
It was very similiar for me too. They have something in their music that I can't find anywhere else. Some songs I like more, some less and don't listen to them all the time but I always come back for this "something" :)
I would say if you're going to try Dir en grey again, go for Dozing Green or Lotus, both mid-tempo but heavy while still being melodic with no harsh vocals. And the videos have cool imagery without being straight up gross and shocking.
Kyo's vocal changes are weird or boring????? wat??? You should see Dir En Grey Uroko. Its one of their recent-ish ones show u the vocalists WIDE range of vocal changes. Which I think its fucken sick!!!
Love it when people are speechless after hearing Dir en grey for the first time. They're simply the best. And love it when big bad guys are grossed out by them while Dir en grey's fanbase consists of girls for the most part :D or at least you would think so when visiting their shows. Mostly girls like me at the concerts :D
Actually the octopus or the tentacles are a big thing in japanese culture/mythology especially in regions where the sea is/was a common working place. I guess that's why they choosed it for their video cause a lot of stuff from dir en grey is inspired by japanese culture... at least that what I think.
This song was done as a response to the 2011 earthquake/tsunami in Japan that lead to the Fukushima nuclear power plant incident. It makes more sense from a cultural context if you look at the giant squid as an analogy to natural disasters.
They set themselves apart with the wide vocal range and determination to set their own image. They definitely taken to tragedies in most of their best songs. It's an experience you have to take on your own to enjoy their music because each one is of its own sound. Their earlier music sets so far apart from what type of sound they are going for now.
Saru2191 Actaully at this time they had a bill board in Times Square that said "nuclear fucked the earth" so i do belive the tentacles are meant to represent radiation and how it is a man-made monster.
Awesome man! FYI, so far you've happened to pick their two weirdest videos lol. Most of their other videos are more normal. Vinushka is about the Hiroshima bombing and the video is serious. I definitely recommend it as well as Dozing Green, Rinkaku and Lotus.
With Dir En Grey videos/music, you just listen to the end because you have no idea what to expect! That's the beauty of Dir End Grey. Surely, not many people will like it and stick to more pragmatic styles of metal, but this is very interesting, as you said.
It's hard to guess but this PV has a message about the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster after the massive earthquake in Japan. Their PVs often has messages hidden behind the extreme images. Please listen to "Uroko". You don't need to watch PV tho. Their producers of PVs go too far sometimes even for the band members but they let the guys make crazy stuff anyway. The most interesting pv is a song like "Agitated screams of maggots" . You should also try listening to the song called "Vinushka." Every one call it their masterpiece.
Good on you for trying multiple songs from an artist, a band like Dir en Grey has evolved so much album to album that it's hard to pick one song to definitively their sound. Their vocalist as you saw has some of the most varied techniques as well. When I saw them live in 2011 he put his mic through an effect and loop pedal and would do an ambient vocal solo while the rest of the band rested which I thought was really unique given the language barrier. I'd love if you reacted to Fleshgod Apocalypse
These guys are my favorite band personally, but it is great that you give it a shot, even if it's not up your alley (Which I completely understand), but watching your reactions is infinitely entertaining.
Dir En Grey is an Avant-garde Metal. So lot of things are going on. It's experimental stuff. Japanese are masters in horror so they are kinda using their thing. Unconventional sounds are used breaking the boundaries. Some other bands you can try which are less weird are Vulture Industries, Thought Industry, Maudlin of the Well, Arcturus, Ulver, Kayo Dot, ...In the woods. Avant-garde is kinda hit and miss stuff either you'll like it or not.
This is actually my favorite band personally. I bought one of their earlier albums about 5 years ago cause i was just starting to get into the Japanese Rock and Metal scene and i instantly fell in love. Definitely give their songs Vinushka and Vanitas a check out. Two of my personal favorites. The Final is also another great song from some of their earlier stuff.
you should give it a try to their music. Like, Inconvenient Ideal (Uroboros Remastered & Expanded), Vinushka, Ware, Yami Tote… (Uroboros Remastered & Expanded). To find out how some of their concerts are I recommend: Dir en grey - Umbrella live (5ugly kingdom), and Dir en Grey - 5 Ugly Kingdom - Gyakujou Tannou Keloid Milk, to listen to Kyo's voice ranges
The thing about the tentacles.. Well, obviously there's known cultural inspiration behind that, but my interpretation of this video was always that it connected with the nuclear power plant fiasco in Japan, and how much of the sea life got polluted. The crazy tentacle monster shit you see going on is basically a squid creature becoming mutated from all the nuclear waste, a metaphor for Japan, an island nation who's culinary world revolves a lot around sea food and fishing have mass pollution tainting their food supply and that the government tries to downplay just how bad the situation really is. Something like that, just an inter-personal view on it, by no means am I trying to act like an authority on the subject.
I know that these two music videos didn't do it for you back then but for Dir En Grey it mostly is better to do a live performance. So here we go: Dir En Grey - Vinushka Would be so nice to see you back ob this!
Thanks galactic, this was a crazy one... two songs by them and I'm exhausted!! But certainly very peculiar, very clever, unique song! Yeah well I didn't appreciate the tentacle artwork stuff but hey... they are cool... Take care ^_^
honestly, their most accessible song to for the American audience to listen to as an introfuction would be The Final. nice hard rock structure and is very limited in the screaming.
Tommy Yeargin yeah well.. I'D say his screaming is.. "Without control" I am kinda fraid he'll lose his voice if he continues the way he does but on the other hand I love the songs (and esp. dum spiro spero as a record.)
i used to dont like dir en grey music but after listening their music couple time (cause my friend cover their song) now im fan of it u should check their music from the early time to and see how they evolve and the social critics they visualized
The thing with dir en grey you have to understand, is that none of what they show is just to shock. All the "crazy shit", is to show some deeper meaning and to comment on Japanese culture. I remember watching Obscure when I was 16 and I couldn't understand why I loved that style nor the reason behind the mechanical dick. But I loved it and I still think dir en grey is one of the best bands on this planet, if you are willing to look past crazy shit.
Hey man, you should react to Exist Trace - Resonance. Just so you know they're all female and they're pretty badass. Btw love your reaction videos. Subscribed. Good luck;)
SuperDazzle13 listen to, saku then kodou then revelation of mankind, those are a trilogy that follows a kid who murders his family and make sure you watch the music video
I think that a really good song that has less shock value from Dir En Grey is Vinushka, if you have interest, that is a song which I recommend you listen to subbed in english. The lyrics are way to interesting
Do check out their latest songs they evolve in many interesting ways never quiet the same of dir en grey even Saku is amazing or the new version of ZAN.
I remember the first time I heard Dir En Grey, it was a non single off a mix tape someone made me of Japanese metal bands... it was Gyakujo Tanno Keloid Milk and I thought the band had 3 vocalists for about a year before I finally looked up their music videos.
I agree with your opinion about the guitars. I like heavy stuff, but not boring heavy. I wasn't able to understand, why people should play the guitar in those all-the-same monotonous way. The guitar can produce such a variation of sounds, i like to say it can even "speak". Both DIR EN GREY and The Gazette guitarists do exactly what i like - speak with their guitars, sing with them. A melodic, rich in sound solo, show the musicians put a lot of effort, imagination and emotions in their work. I like exactly the changes in those bands, particularly in DeG. Change of rhythm in one song, the slight genre variation from song to song, the vocals of course. It keeps you in. You know, there a bands that hearing just one song of them, gives the conclusion what kind of band they are. Dir en grey are not like that. May i suggest a collection of their guitar solos? The last album is not included. I don't know if it represents their work best, but it's the only way to show more from them, in a short way. Dir En Grey Guitar Solo From Kaoru and Die [Part 1-4] czcams.com/video/TLqh0iwohhE/video.html czcams.com/video/W8_zHOeZ0uc/video.html If that catches your ear and you dig deeper in their discography, i think you will see they were not always one of those growl type of bands with shocking PVs. This fact could shock you even more :D I enjoy your videos. Keep it up!
You should try and find videos with english subs on them for japanese bands. So much is lost when you don't know what they sing about and with Dir en grey there is alot of deeper and hidden meanings in the lyrics that you have to read and interpret in your own way. It makes the music so much better. Dir en Grey, Buck-Tick and Maximum The Hormone are great. I can also recommend Maximum the Hormone - Yoshu Fukushu /watch?v=dtf5fuTkbsA (Subbed) Dir en grey - Behind a vacant image /watch?v=KApu-ne1Vak (Subbed)
a few years late, but whatever. Kyo is is one of the greatest vocalists ever. dude can sing like you wouldn't believe, with at least 5 octaves (some say as high as 7 octaves, and he CAN fucking get up there, but the last couple are either only when he's not sick, or just his highest screams. he either has some sort of degenerative vocal disease or he just gets sick a lot, or both. i can't really remember) AND he can (still) scream/growl better, deeper and more versatile than almost anyone else. he's also pretty much always consistent like this live. motherfucker is an absolute powerhouse of a vocalist. and to top it all off, he's one of the nicest dudes ever.
Dir En Grey are more a experimental band, through all these years they exsist they made so much changes. In their first nine to ten years they made this visual kei stuff like mejibray do nowdays. Dir en Grey are a role model for so many bands all these years like Mejibray. As you said the song is confusing so are Dir En Grey, they are realy a band who are hard to understand. But they are worth to listen, expecially to the albums from 2008 to nowdays, they are realy unique and realy atmospheric concept albums. And the vocal range of singer Kyo is so huge and versatile. He is one of the best in the world I swear. For me he is somekind the japanese Chino Moreno who has also a wide vocal range.
There was an interview once where the guy explained that they started doing the tentacle stuff because they didn't have to censor it the same as they did with man junk. You should definitely check out one of dir en greys live videos!
I'm fairly sure the same director is responsible for all their videos. I've heard that they let him do whatever he wants for the videos. But, for this one they made him change it and tone it down a bit. They thought the imagery in the video was a bit over the top. One of them said something along the lines of: "It was pretty much porn" in an interview. It makes me wonder what the video originally looked like...
lmao..... love how they give the guy so much freedom. btw can you tell me in which interview u came across these facts, I'd like to check it out myself. And seriously I'd love to see what the guy originally wanted to do and compared to obscure, revelation of mankind....I didn find different sense to be that over the top in terms of shock value. So wish they'd had let the guy deliver his usual :3 goods than tone it down.
I would like to suggest this J alternative metal band called lynch. Search up the music video called EVOKE. If not that song, then F.A.K.E. or Mirrors are also great choices. I think you'll dig them.
Go check out REIKETSU NARISEBA by this band, dude I think you're gonna like it. An the video is sort of moderate. You know.. for Japanese standards lol.
You should check out more Dir en grey songs. I suggest you olders songs like; "Ain't Afraid to Die" which is really emotional, you should also check the lyrics and what the visual actually means, Dir en grey dont do random stuff.
I'd say watch Vinushka if you want something less chaotic but in the same vein as the two videos you've seen or got with something a bit older like Kasumi which is a solid song but it's much easier on the eyes and ears :)
Or maybe even Yurameki or Utafumi by Dir en Grey. Yurameki is really really one of their softer ones and Utafumi is more fast paced and hard. I don't know of Yurameki having a MV, but Utafumi's is odd. Kind of reminded me of a song from NiN.
Can you react to another X Japan video. Perhaps Jade or IV which are popular in the West. But I would recommend Dhalia, Blue Blood, and they have a 34 minute song called The Art of Life and it is incredible. Metal mixed with classical, it's great~!
Dir En Grey, Umbrella... just a fun song. Old song... I'm teaching myself that song on bass. Diru has sooooo many different styles. Cube [KR} is another great song. Live performances are fucking amazing. Kyo (singer) can go from Growling to operatic higs. Of all the Japanese vocalist out these days, Kyo is probably the top for diversity of tone. Mucc's singer, Tatsuro is another. You're missing out if you don't delve deeper into Japanese music across the board. For another good girl band, Love Bites.
Dir en grey is hard to introduce to new listeners. They’ve pretty consistently changed their style with almost every new album as well, and they started as basically glam pop rock. I feel like Vinushka or just something like Lotus would’ve been an easier song to swallow lol
You should check out Crossfaith - Photosphere (live at Summer Sonic 2012), Survive Said The Prophet - Fools Gold or Man With A Mission - Get Off of My Way
Between the beard and the tapout hat, you come across to me as someone who would march around shouting blood and soil. Maybe prejudiced, maybe spot on, that is just the vibe you give off to me.
You come across as someone who anonymously passes judgment based on appearance and not to what is being said, inside of a blind bias for the content being spoken of
Kyo's vocals are without doubt the most versatile and dinamic vocal range of all the bands I know from every genre, Dir en grey is probably my favorite band... I have been requesting Ne Obliviscaris or Chtonic - Takao would be interesting too!!

this.
yeah dir en grey had social critic massage in their lyric and visual
JrockSubs
I thought obscure is about his wife had an abortion without Kyo knowing?
JrockSubs Kyo is a fan of douboe entendres
Dao Yang Not his wife, he never married. It's either ex fiancee or ex girlfriend
the vocalist is isanely talented and unique. the high pitched screams are very different not for everyone
VINUSHKA from Dir en grey is master piece of dir en grey
DIABOLOS is equal in my books.
@@jamesblazer9836 they are both masterpieces but in a different way
"Dozing Green" or "Vinushka" should have been a better choice if you are not a fan of the growl part. And as you seems to like SiM, try "Amy" by SiM. You can also try Radwimps - "Jikkyou Chukei" ( compared to DeG or SiM, it's calm, really calm )
dozing green forever.
LaShay Nazreih love me~
man you should try dir en grey vinushuka...that's the good one...it;s about aftermath of hiroshima bombing
Agree! Vinushka is one of their masterpiece :D
Lycara Yuu yup ^^
totally agree :D
yes
agree,, masterpiece...
Thank you for checking them out. I too at first didn't like them, but as I kept listening to more and more of their songs, it grew on me. Plus I like Shinya's drumming.

WaruKen just listen the music on his background, that's the kinda metal he listens. so yeah, really dir en grey is not his type at all
Dir en grey is freaking amazing live!!! Kyos singing is amazzzzzing ☺️😁😀
Watch "vinushka" by Dir En Grey. You will see, that they can do very melodic and lyrical stuff!
Love it when people are speechless after hearing Dir en grey for the first time. They're simply the best. And love it when big bad guys are grossed out by them while Dir en grey's fanbase consists of girls for the most part :D or at least you would think so when visiting their shows. Actually the octopus or the tentacles are a big thing in japanese culture/mythology especially in regions where the sea is/was a common working place. I guess that's why they choosed it for their video cause a lot of stuff from dir en grey is inspired by japanese culture... at least that what I think.
I was always curious. The sea makes sense culturally.
I've always been really impressed with the vocal range of this band's singer, that's what makes him one of my favorite vocalists in metal
Kyo's vocals are fucking brutal; that's what makes Dir En Grey, great. His vocal ranges are amazing.
Kyo and Mike Patton are the craziest musicians on the history.
React to versailles - ascendead master, if you like nightwish then you'll like them too...
If he likes Nightwish, a good Japanese band would be Liv Moon. Magistina Saga might be another one.
yyeeeeeesss!! YYEEEEESSS THANK YOU for give another opportunity to dir en grey
Kyo Dir En Grey Vocal screaming is one of the best, even Jonathan Davis from Korn also have a big questions how Kyo could do that scream.
the GazettE - UNDYING please!
DOGMA would be great too!
Didn't expect to see you here, haha
+Gab-riel YASSS DOGMA!
Yes, please!
100% happy you did this. Respect on the opinions part. Slightly determined to force feed more tho. (no pun intended)
you should give it a try to their music.
Something like that, just an inter-personal view on it, by no means am I trying to act like an authority on the subject.
React to Dir en Grey - Revelation of Mankind.
Believe it or not, Kyo, the lead singer of Dir En Grey is widely considered to be the best vocalist in the world, grossly outbeating Mike Patton.
I know that these two music videos didn't do it for you back then but for Dir En Grey it mostly is better to do a live performance. So here we go: Dir En Grey - Vinushka
Would be so nice to see you back ob this!
I love your commentary on guitar solos. Glad you checked out these videos by then.
You should react to the GazettE's "UNDYING". It's a great song with very interesting changes.
Meh.. that song needs more screaming. DS is just fine.
true that. I was just mentioning for the general audience who would be overwhelmed by kyo's screaming at first.
Tommy Yeargin
yeah well.. I'D say his screaming is.. "Without control" I am kinda fraid he'll lose his voice if he continues the way he does but on the other hand I love the songs (and esp. dum spiro spero as a record.)
This song is right up my alley with that Japanese groove metal sound, the entire Dum Spiro Spero album is bloody terrific though.
I finally got to see Diru live three weeks ago and holy.fuck it was amazing
As good as they are their lives are like 10x better
i used to dont like dir en grey music but after listening their music couple time (cause my friend cover their song) now im fan of it u should check their music from the early time to and see how they evolve and the social critics they visualized
owh btw u should see Vinushka - dir en grey (the uncensored one) wouldnt make u nauses but it will make u sad
That song is a masterpiece
The thing with dir en grey you have to understand, is that none of what they show is just to shock. All the "crazy shit", is to show some deeper meaning and to comment on Japanese culture. I remember watching Obscure when I was 16 and I couldn't understand why I loved that style nor the reason behind the mechanical dick. But I loved it and I still think dir en grey is one of the best bands on this planet, if you are willing to look past crazy shit.
People are asking about their newer stuff but you should check out their older stuff
amazing rock metal around the world..sukekiyo & dir en grey💞💞💞💞..
Hey man, you should react to Exist Trace - Resonance. Just so you know they're all female and they're pretty badass. Btw love your reaction videos. Subscribed. Good luck;)
Dir en grey is not really my cup of tea but they have one song thats in my top 20, try Kodou thats one hell of a good song
SuperDazzle13 listen to, saku then kodou then revelation of mankind, those are a trilogy that follows a kid who murders his family and make sure you watch the music video
More dir en grey please. I recommend Kodou or my favorite The Final. Reading other comments I also agree with Vinushka or Revelation of Mankind.

Dude, the video that you like:
the Gazette - UNDYING
Mary's Blood - Moebius Loop
Gossip - Psycho≠pass
MORRIGAN - Everlasting
DADAROMA - Lucid Dream
Avanchick - Hitorigoto
DEZERT -「あー。」
MEJIBRAY - VENOMS
Please, we waiting rock! \m/
You really should check out The GazettE - Undying. It is not that weird than Dir En Grey but
the Video is soo cool!
Absolute reason to not feature them anymore! Kyo is out of his mind
He broke his vocal chords a few times for going too high pitched
FirstName Surname
He damaged it but he can still do it
He harm his vocal cords because of unproper screaming overall, this highs are do a small part to this
I agree with your opinion about the guitars.
Dir En Grey Guitar Solo From Kaoru and Die [Part 1-4]

If that catches your ear and you dig deeper in their discography, i think you will see they were not always one of those growl type of bands with shocking PVs. This fact could shock you even more :D
I enjoy your videos.
I can also recommend
Maximum the Hormone - Yoshu Fukushu /watch?v=dtf5fuTkbsA (Subbed)
Dir en grey - Behind a vacant image /watch?v=KApu-ne1Vak (Subbed)
me gustan mucho tus reacciones y las opiniones que das de los videos y las canciones, (aunque se poco de ingles y medio entiendo lo que dices) jajaja

You should definitely check out one of dir en greys live videos!
please check out Chthonic!!
I suggested them a few weeks ago. Such a great band.
Yeah, Takao or Supreme pain of the Tyrant would be nice =)
49 Theurgy Chains!
Hello!
Japanese Hardcore band
''Pay money To my Pain” -Sweetest Vengeance
Please see a video.
Dir En Grey - Red Soil, Rinkaku, Uroko, or both the old & new version of Zan :D
So wish they'd had let the guy deliver his usual :3 goods than tone it down.
tentacles=invasion, greed, dominance, corruption, devil's hands, sexual desire, perversion, all those things
You should listen to Macabre ( Live version ) it's 16 min long and better than a greek tragedy ahaha
Kyo's voice is a gift from God rlly
Really need to check out Ain't afraid to die by Dir En Grey a lot softer an the video is amazing as fuck
I would like to suggest this J alternative metal band called lynch. Search up the music video called EVOKE. If not that song, then F.A.K.E. or Mirrors are also great choices. I think you'll dig them.
I like how you're keep being mesmerized.
I love dir en grey. Glade you enjoyed it.
Go check out REIKETSU NARISEBA by this band, dude
I think you're gonna like it. An the video is sort of moderate. You know.. for Japanese standards lol.
That whistle scream is real check the live version
Try Vinishuka
With English subtitles
That song is about how Japanese society refuses to see and learn from the past
Its
Dark
Dir en grey are more than this song you should check their other songs 😍😍😍😍😍 so much more
This one was great! NOCTURNAL BLOODLUST PLEASE!
What kind of vocal is this?
It's KYO
You should check out more Dir en grey songs.
I suggest you olders songs like; "Ain't Afraid to Die" which is really emotional, you should also check the lyrics and what the visual actually means, Dir en grey dont do random stuff.
I gotta agree with the discussion on the solo.
I'd say watch Vinushka if you want something less chaotic but in the same vein as the two videos you've seen or got with something a bit older like Kasumi which is a solid song but it's much easier on the eyes and ears :)
React to Versailles - Ascendead Master >w
Yeah you should react to the band "Versailles"!
One more thing... Kyo the singer? Is just barely 5'3", but on stage...he's 12 ft tall!
Man you should watch with lyrics and will blow your mind.
Dir En Grey's "The Blossoming Beelzebub", please 😃
you should check out their song "Uroko" it is a personal favourite.
Dir en grey is hard to introduce to new listeners. They’ve pretty consistently changed their style with almost every new album as well, and they started as basically glam pop rock. I feel like Vinushka or just something like Lotus would’ve been an easier song to swallow lol
it's art , you dont understand .
You should check out Crossfaith - Photosphere (live at Summer Sonic 2012), Survive Said The Prophet - Fools Gold or Man With A Mission - Get Off of My Way
Fuckin Love these vids❤️🤘
You should do a reaction to the song Inside of me by VAMPS
Man you should try Uroko by Dir en grey his vocal in that is SO AMAZING
I don't know if you've covered it, but since you're doing Japanese metal, try Japanese Goth: Freya by Femme Fatale.
You should review The band SIGH some more Japanese metal
Could you check out something from Keldian? Keldian - Never Existed, for example?
can you react to Scream Hard As you can by Fear and loathing in Las Vegas
i agree with that ! or maybe vice and virtue can be good too
Dir en grey really big in asia and latin america.
These are KYO vocals, he's unreal!
the gazette undying or dogma please
Between the beard and the tapout hat, you come across to me as someone who would march around shouting blood and soil. Maybe prejudiced, maybe spot on, that is just the vibe you give off to me.
You come across as someone who anonymously passes judgment based on appearance and not to what is being said, inside of a blind bias for the content being spoken of
Listen to Dir en Grey - Vinushka. definitely worth the listen
