My dad and grandfather fished every inch of Back Bay, and often took me along as a small child. We lived next door to Walt Cary. His chickens used to fly over the fence into our yard, and our Weimaraner would kill them. Walt didn't much care, "just throw the carcasses back over the fence, I just need the feathers anyway!" lol. Later we spent a lot of time camping and fishing the Shenandoah with Walt. I remember he used to give us teenagers double-handfuls of free popping bugs out of his studio.

A place near and dear to my heart. I've fished there every year for 40 + years. My dad worked for a real estate company that had 2 cottages they would rent to the employee's for vacation. We used to walk out in the bay at the end of sandbridge and fish. It was my introduction to bass fishing. I heard stories of how great that fishery was from the local fisherman, one of the homes we stayed in had several mounted bass that where all 8-10lb or larger. Glad to see its getting back to what it once was. We still go down ever year and I can't wait to go back this year.....

Thanks for the memories...My Uncle's had 3 cabins on the water since the 40's on Back Bay, I spent my summers fishing/crabbing/swimming, (Winters duck hunting). A childhood everyone should experience. The Gallup Boys (Dick, Paul, Bruce, Alton & Dan) they lived life to the fullest. Wish they were still around to tell all theirs stories from the beginning about Back Bay.

Great video! Just one correction: the video says that saltwater is bad for the Back Bay, and also says that they want to return the Bay to the way it was before people were here. Historically, Back Bay was very much a saltwater body of water, with multiple inlets from the Atlantic.

I'm in agreement with Sam, would love to see more. I am in Oklahoma, but just added this fishery to my list of dream fishing destinations. Looks like great fishing, incredible natural scenery, I definitely want to fish from a kayak on that water some day!

Actually it said saltwater is bad for Bass Egg production. We acknowledge that's it was once tidal but that's been long ago.
