  • New to triathlon and not sure what to wear on race day? I go over the basics that will get you through your first race.
The whole race: You can either race in a 2 piece tri suit (top/bottoms), a 1 piece sleeveless suit, or a 1 piece sleeved suit.
Swim: A triathlon wetsuit, swim cap and goggles. If the water is too warm for a wetsuit, you can either swim in your tri suit or a swim skin. Make sure to choose an actual triathlon specific wetsuit and not a scuba diving or wakeboarding type of suit. Triathlon wetsuits are made for swimming, so stick with them.
Bike: Out onto the bike, you'll need a helmet. You can either use a regular bike helmet or an aerohelmet. Sunglasses are a must, either dark or clear depending on the sun and weather conditions. Cycling shoes that clip into your pedals are another must have. Lastly on the bike, depending on the race rules, you may be required to wear your race number (on a number belt). If not required, just leave your race belt with your running shoes in the transition area and put it on before starting the run.
Run: Race number, sunglasses, hat/visor (optional), socks(optional as well) and of course- running shoes! You can either use normal running shoes with quick laces or you can choose a triathlon specific shoe, which will have quick laces, drainage holes and be more suited to running barefoot.

Would you say that the one piece sleeve suit is relatively easy to go to the bathroom in? Thank you

Your video was so far the most informative! I’ve been looking for a triathlon gear vídeo and yours was very good. Can you make something about how a beginner should train for a first time sprint triathlon? What to expect, if you need to buy gels, what to drink and stuff. There’s tons of videos out there, but none of them are direct.

Thanks! I've added your idea to my list. Will probably upload it over the next month :)

    Hey there,
Some great info. I’m doing an Awuaswim, yes a swim and ride only. Would I just wear my riding knicks under my wetsuit?
    Cheers.

Nice vid - kit kit kit... $$$. Have you heard of a Canadian glasses company called Zuzu? I saw their sunglasses at the Ottawa Army run last year and they are pretty slick. Reasonably priced, durable (they demo stepping on them and they survive) and best of all Canadian company.

I have heard of Zuzu. I know a few athletes who are sponsored by them. To be honest, I haven't looked much into sunglasses in many years since my Oakley's have been great for 10 years. They are starting to get scratched up though, so I may look at Zuzu this spring!

Could you make a quick video of how you clip both legs into pedals?

Hi Shaun, here is a video from Global Cycling Network that explains how to clip in- czcams.com/video/H6h30OqTyTg/video.html

I suppose the swim skin isn't really used in the shorter differences since it's probably a pita to get off. I thought about getting one since down here in FL we only have a handful of races that *might* be wetsuit legal.

I would still race short distance in a swim skin. I would pull it down to my waist as I'm running out of the water or through transition. Once I get to my bike it would only take an extra 2-3 seconds to pull it off. Definitely something you'd want to practice getting out of though.

Ah, interesting. I'll add a swim skin to my 2018 gear then.
