Demolition Dave versus Belgrave Heights Granite

- Steve is a successful contractor with a fleet of machinery, cutting in a new driveway should have been a breeze... however the local hard granite was lurking just below the surface. Not discouraged easily Steve purchased some Expanding Chemical Cracking Agent, drilled a heap of holes, mixed it up and filled the holes and waited. A few days later it was evident that nothing was happening in a hurry with this rock. Enter Demolition Dave, the decision was made to continue with cracking agent as we did not have a lot of soil to cover with if we were going to blast, we quickly drilled some larger diameter much deeper holes and filled them with cracking goo, the free standing rock worked well the other rock was slow and a bit disappointing, probably because the weather was cold and this has a big effect on the cracking agent reaction. The desired result was finally achieved with a bit of explosive help.

Perhaps your best video so far. The tranquil music leading up to the blast was a thoughtful touch. Might try work up a video with your blasts substituting for the cannons in the 1812 overture
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Steve, there are all kinds of limitations and restrictions surrounding the use of music on You Tube and much of the stuff That I would like to use (1812) is not available or only available on videos that are not monetised.
Always think - the drilling must be about as exciting as watching paint dry - not to mention physically very tiring too.!
Those rocks were huge! Great cracking time lapse... sure is a slow job. Finally - some boom to finish - pretty fiddly job overall. Yep - think you'll be back!
I'll be doing some more time lapse with the cracking agent, that is for sure.
Thank you Dave for the videos, great content. This past winter when I used expanding compound on some large surface granite on my property I found it took up to a week to see the full results despite the packaging stating 3 days.
The results are highly variable Sam, depends on many thing, it is never fast in the winter.

Cracking goo, although interesting is rather anticlimactic. In the end, we finally get, here comes the boom. I think that expanding goo works great on the rock that is not so damn hard, like what you come into daily contact with. Cheers, Basil.

I used to work for REA (Rural Electric Association ) setting poles we always used 70/30 dynamite normally 1/4 stick but have had to go as much as 2.5 hate to do that cause it loosed up the overburden so much but we were expected to set 30 poles per day.

I think this is the first video I have seen where you used a pneumatic cylinder to support your jack hammer/drill. Working smart is always the best :)

I am from Melbourne to. We also use Expando on some of our jobs where a breaker won’t fit or we aren’t allowed. It’s really cool stuff.

@@demolitiondavedrillandblast We use a pneumatic air drill or a hammer drill and just blow the dust out with a blower.
We do the dig ups for the repair of the oil and fuel lines out of the refinery's. On the fuel line to the airport we are not allowed to use the breaker so its a lot of expando and hand jack hammering. I had never heard of it before i started working with it but it really impressive
That's interesting Peter, I've heard that some of my competitors have been trying to get another large diameter pipe to cross under the airport pipe and they have been at it for quite a while now.

Hi Bruce, the det cord is not supplying all of the energy, there is a lump of packaged explosive in the bottom of each hole also.
Back in the day blasting in the Fraser Canyon of British Columbia for the Trans Canada Highway they would braid it for preshearing. Very handy stuff to have around, it's good for lot's of chores😉

I wonder if filling those holes with thermite and after ignition dousing the rock with ice cold water would work to crack it
I don't think the small amount of thermite that you could fit in those holes would have enough energy, however if you build a large hot fire around a rock and force air on it with a leaf blower, get it really going well and then dump a wheel barrow of cold water on it the rock will usually break, often very violently!
I have learned the hard way to drill extra holes with chemical especially in insitu rock floaters go pretty well but I often follow up with a breaker when its in deep blasting is a huge pain after it has cracked so much go work though you sure gave it hell
Twas not an easy job Chris, I'm sure you would have noticed the tendency of the reaction happening too quickly and the resultant ejection if the product is used in holes that are too large diameter, have you every tried using a higher temperature grade mix in larger diameter holes?
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast we have three different types for various tempatures and I do mix them sometimes to get what I need I use over size holes most of the time and do get blow outs if it gets to warm I have also noticed that hard tight grain granite tends to take several days to react and larger grain rock can go off in hours when it works good you can stick your hand in the crack

Hey Dave, Another great video! All the different angles and that slow-mo at the end....awesome! Isn't there a faster expanding slurry? I've been in some granite quarry's where they split 30 ton blocks into more manageable 10 ton blocks with a slurry and it's done overnight. Is your rock that much harder? Hi Jim, there are a lot of variables at play when you are getting this stuff to work for you, ground temperature and matching it to the temperature range of the product being the main one. Yes I have split rocks overnight many times also.
You use a carbide drilling tip on those rods or diamond tip or just hardened steel?

I'm in the process of either removing a big ass rock, or giving up. Expando looks to be the answer. What kind of drill and bits were used? Can the bits be used in a typical home drill?
Hi Steve, Expando is very good at breaking rocks when used correctly, you will need 38mm diameter holes drilled most of the way through the rock for best results. I use a pneumatic rock drill that a miner would typically use to drill blast holes when sinking a shaft underground, the drill rods are H22 (22mm Hex) and I'm using knock on button bits (sorry they will not fit your drill). - Not a cheap tool and you will need a big air compressor to run it - at least 125 CFM! (you may be able to hire this equipment though). If your job is not too big you could drill the rock using a king size electric hammer drill, either a SDS+ or preferably a SDS Max style hammer drill will do the job but no where near as quick. If you decide to give it a crack invest a bit of time to learn about the dangers of working with stone dust first and how to protect yourself. Or just engage a local expert contractor.

I feel for you Dave having to use the very unreliable cracking agent. It's a normal practice of having to blast after using cracking agent to get the desired results. Propellant Powder Rock Breaking Cartridges would do a better job. You will only need blasting mats for total control. I will send you some charge parameters. 👍

If it's smaller lumps of rock can you not use a pecked on a large track machine ??
A machine mounted hydraulic breaker is good on softer rock formations or hard rock formations that have a lot of jointing and bedding planes (cracks). but not very useful on very hard solid rocks. I might have a video up soon that shows what happens to the breaker point on a 35 Tonne machine when the rock will not break... the breaker point broke off after about 30 minutes work! Dave, Is the Expando your using the same stuff I once used as pipe dope? Same color and that also was powder that was mixed with water. We mostly used it on natural gas pipe. Once it set there was no way to break the connection other than to destroy it!

The customer purchased the goo and had a shot at it by himself before engaged my services, we continued with his product and then some of mine. The decision to blast was delayed because we did not have a lot of suitable dirt to cover a shot with close at hand.

Hi Dave, long time subscriber of your work. I’m wondering with that particular job, if you were standing on the bank above where the 1st blast occurred, would you feel it thru your body, or does the covering of earth over what’s being blown up lessen that to a large degree?

What length steels are you using?
600, 1200, 1800 on the free standing rock, 1800 on the batter line of the larger rock and 1200 into the face. all 38mm dia.

That expanding goo appears to be an overall waste of effort considering the cost of drilling all those holes.

Not sure if the mustang still does rides, it had a wheels up landing a few years ago. I've seen that Havard around a few times but not the Trojan.

The small excavator is fitted with a medium size pneumatic hammer as the price difference was $26,000
A hydro hammer on a mini would not even begin to scratch rocks of that size and apparent density.
