  • This video serves to example some of Hideki Naganuma's samples and their origins, in the hopes that I can inspire you (and your friends) to help me discover where the rest of the samples are from. I find it exciting to go searching for the origin of these samples because it feels like I'm taking apart Hideki's work and seeing what makes it tick.
Hideki Naganuma is a sampling demon. I'm trying to find out where every one of his samples originates from. It will not be easy, and that is why I need your help.
The Sonic Rush samples can be found here: idisk.mac.com/p... (courtesy of Andlabs @ SonicRetro)
    Original SonicRetro forum thread: forums.sonicret...
Many examples courtesy of: whosampled.com - notable contributors: latergator43, tocksickfocks
Other people I wish to thank: madhair60 (for Sylvester & Tweety timecode), huepow00 (for discovering Sylvester & Tweety sample), troysson81 (their original video inspired me to make this one), IAMCRASHMAN (for leading me on a wild goose chase with the incorrectly associated Super Junk Boy sample), VEVO (for MJ and Paula Abdul music video), Foxms15 & HellfireMisc (gameplay footage of Sonic Rush), anyone else I missed out, and everyone else who assisted; and you, for watching this video.

Can't believe it's been over a decade since I found this video. In that ten years, I went hard at including samples in my own work. Then came the follow up video. I'm telling you, when I tell you that you started a wave with these videos... I have since slowed down using samples, but if i hadn't learned about the existence of 90's sampling CDs, there are so many projects of mine that would never have been. And that's thanks to your videos. It's crazy, the idea that you probably have no association with music production at all, but you were able to influence so many with these informative videos. Well done.

Many of these weren't directly pulled by Hideki himself, but were rather curated for a variety of sample CD libraries. Also the Grandia part is completely false - that's simply an example of them using the same sample from the same library. You can even find that standalone violin in GarageBand's stock libaries.

@@escaperoutebritish Did You Know Gaming posted a video today about sampling in video game music and of all the examples they could've used for Hideki Naganuma, they went with the Grandia/Wrapped in Black violin. Hope I didn't come off as hostile, but I felt inclined to believe this may have been where they got that information from. Your video has otherwise influenced sampling in my own musical work over the years, as it was what originally gave me perspective on what samples sounded like in their source vs how Hideki utilized them

It could be noted that a large number of Naganuma's samples were likely from the sampling resource CD (which is fairly easy to ahold of) called "Normon Cook's- Skip To My Loops".
Though, the sources of the samples are indeed accurate as you've pointed out here. I don't think Naganuma knew what most of the samples origins were (at the time, anyhow), and had used that CD as a resource.

Same, it's still a good sample either way and was well placed in the song IMHO, what I'd possibly like to see assuming there's enough material for it is a Deavid soul sampling video (apparently the track "Yappie Feet" uses samples from one or all 3 of the Zero G Datafile sample CD's but I've been unable to confirm this as I haven't had a chance to find a copy of any of the 3 CDs although I would like to someday).

dude, I really love this video. I first saw it in 2013, I think? Rush was one of my childhood games. I remember messing with the sound test as being one of my first experiences having my OWN music to "DJ"(before I ever owned an MP3 player).
It was probably the first time I consciously listened to songs for their nuances, enjoying them for their catchy uniqueness. Of course, the DS speaker isn't the best sound sound system so the first time I plugged in headphones (which were purchased because I was annoying my parents with the constant noise) I found myself starting the cycle anew, with different ears. This was my first introduction to electric, heavily sampled music.
rambling with poor grammar because I'm intoxicated. Present day I find myself completely engulfed by the will to hear & create music, so projects such as yours allow a newly-kindled appreciation for these little gems forever lodged in my memory.

There is a 6 second break called the Amen break, which is part of a song called Amen brother. This break is considered to be one of the most important samples used in modern music and I believe Hideki may have sampled it as well in Let Mom Sleep. In the first 10-15 or so seconds, you can hear it however it is very light in the original and it carries over in Let Mom Sleep.

    H. Naganuma mostly used sample libraries / construction kits they gave him at Sega (at least for Jet Set Radio), and he even confirmed that lately on Twitter. I highly doubt that those guys go as far as to look for their own samples, and that's why you hear the same melody loops being used in different games published by the same company.

Heya, this is tocksickfocks from WhoSampled. :) I've seen this video a while back and I wanted to comment, but I forgot to. Anyway, I really enjoyed it as a whole. but since you're planning a second part, I thought I'd add some notes and a few corrections, in the interests of accuracy and completion and such.
0:48 While these are the games he's most known for, he also has produced for a number of obscure Japanese Dreamcast games, Sega Rally 2, Sega Rally 2006, Sakatasuku, Super Monkey Ball (Banana Blitz and 3D), Yakuza 5 and the anime Air Gear, among others. These other soundtracks tend to be ignored, but can be a great source of sample information. Part of the lack of focus comes from the fact that he's produced a number of these soundtracks under the alias Skankfunk (which he originally used for works not released by Sega, then ironically used for Sega works after he had officially left the company).
3:21 You've actually gotten mixed up here. The "Ohhh-hohh!" is actually from Touch And Go by Ecstacy, Passion & Pain featuring Barbara Roy. The sample from Think (About It) is the sort of modulated "Ohhh-woah-ohhhhhhhhh" you hear elsewhere in That's Enough.
4:49 While Can't Do Nuttin For Ya Man does have the "Rock that shit homie!" lyric in it, the actual vocal sample that is used in the song is from a different Public Enemy song, Terminator X Speaks With His Hands. I have to admit that my entry currently on WhoSampled is wrong in this regard, and I need to get around to reporting it so it's correct.
5:28 This is a case of "Hey, this other song I found uses the sample too, so it must automatically be the origin!" The entry for this on WhoSampled is wrong. While they are indeed the same vocal, it actually originates from Boogie Down (Do It) by Catch-22. Hideki samples almost exclusively from sample CDs, and I highly doubt that he would sample some obscure hardcore DJ who almost definitely got the vocal from a sample CD himself. However, the WS mods seem to disagree, as they've ignored my requests to fix it, only furthering this misinformation. Rather frustrating.
7:36 No need to say much here, as you corrected yourself via the text overlay. It is indeed from Hancock's Half Hour, where George Micheal had sampled it from as well. It didn't originate with George Michael, but again I'm sure you're aware of that by this point.
10:30 This is not a direct sample, but an interpolation (replaying the melody with different instruments). Some also argue that it's actually an interpolation of Start The Commotion by The Wiseguys.
12:05 I'm pretty sure it is the same sample. It is hard to hear in Metal Scratchin', but that sort of percussive "do do dah" is identical to James Brown's one if you speed it up.
14:46 Some people have argued that SR and Grandia sample a third source, and that may be true, but the Grandia soundtrack album lists specific credits for musicians. including a violinist. That riff has since (possibly prior?) appeared on sample CDs and even the GarageBand music program.
15:47 This is all uninformative opinion, but I personally wouldn't call it lazy. If it is from Grandia, he took what was a sort of joyous main riff in a cheery rollicking tune and made it a background element that adds a sense of fearful tension to an intense and fast final boss tune. He made it work in a different context. I think sometimes people focus too much on how a sample is modified from the original (often with the notion of no changes = lazy), when there's a lot of creativity in putting a sample in an entirely different context from the original, modifying the "feeling" of a sample just by changing its environment.. But again, just my opinion.
16:31 While this was what I believed to be the original sample source when I created the WS entry, I am now doubtful that this is the case, as I've found another song that predates Techno Slam by a year with the sample (and isn't the source either).
18:05 I wouldn't call it being too lazy to make a new name as much as it likely was meant to be a homage, sort of a subtle wink and a nod to the source material.
At any rate, I eagerly anticipate your follow-up video, and there seems to be quite a few of us working on discovering the many many samples of Hideki Naganuma, so there's always progress being made. :)

Man this video is incredibly helpful aswell as interesting! Thanks for making this.
It will most definitely help Me in my music now that I know more of where the Jet Set Radio & Sonic Rush samples are from.
I made a remix of "Let Mom Sleep" two years ago simply called "Jet Set Radio - Let Mom Sleep RMIX" which I think you would find quite interesting as I used the original sample of "Will you stop playing with that radio of yours" and pretty much the whole conversation of what the Lady is having.

I know it's not Naganuma, But I think I know the Everybody Jump Around by Richard Jacques "Jump around, Jump up, jump up and get down" sample. It's kind of obvious though. It's from House of Pain's "Jump Around". I also believe that's where a good bit of the samples come from in that song.

Over the years I've noticed a few samples taken or used in other stuff too - I think the children saying "Yayyy!" in 'Let Mom Sleep" is also used in 'Samba de Amiigo' when the players Rank goes up, only in JSR it's played at a lower pitch.
in JSRF, I'm pretty certain that DJ Professor K interludes contain a sample of Lady Miss Kier from Deee-lite saying "Groovy!", possibly from the song 'Groove is in the Heart' (sounds a lot like her).
Funnily enough, Deee-lite uses the "What is love?" sample on the song of the same name.

Seems to be a slightly common sample if it's appeared in other tracks, but that's the only one I've managed to spot on my own.

3:34 About the Lyn Collins sample, you're right in that That's Enough does sample it, but it's not the "OHHH HO" vocal; it's the zombie-esque "ooohhhhhh whooooa" vocal (/watch?v=ezTFFCA5Spk at 1:43). The "OHHHH HO" comes from "Touch and Go" By Ecstasy, Passion & Pain (/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=GsBukS5mrQY at 1:51; it's slowed down).

The James Brown sample is definitely correct. It's used much more clearly in The Prodigy's "Charly (Alley Cat Mix)" which is probably what inspired the Sonic track.

We've talked to Mr.Naganuma and Mr.Ohtani about this before, actually.
Apparently SEGA has purchased a LOT of sampling library CD's, which is available for all of the SEGA artists to use freely and legally in their music. This has been growing and expanding ever since the SEGA CD era, I'd imagine. There are shared samples between Sonic R and Sonic Unleashed, and even Yakuza and Monkey Ball! It's pretty neat what they can do with all of these samples, I think!

Ah, that's alright: Interpolation isn't as common knowledge a term as sampling, so I don't harp on it too much. But yeah, I'm glad more people are doing videos like this these days; I love the concept of sampling (I do it a lot in tunes I make), and I love both the feeling you get when discovering a sample source, and when people unite to break down songs- videogame or otherwise- and examine the sounds and samples within!

  • @Fasti3ear

Awe, you don't believe in subtlety in music? As a musician, I live for that kind of stuff!
Like on the kick and ride drum beat in the intro. The ting of the ride is very slight, but if you pay attention closely, he accentuates it with a high hat.
It is also a reason why I love Trent Reznors stuff. He puts all kinds of subtleties in his music.
Other than that I like this video. It is kinda funny because I heard the original Grandia before the sonic one in this video. Very interesting!

Lots of erroneous info here... "Rock that shit homie" is not from the Public Enemy song "I can't do nothing for ya man", that is (and i may say, OBVIOUSLY) a sample, it's from an older Public Enemy song off their first album (Yo, Bum Rush the Show) the last cut "Terminator X plays with his hands" ... it can be clearly heard here in it's original form: czcams.com/video/45x2fWxihoU/video.html @45:26
