    In response to all comments directed towards Muslims and immigration:
    Firstly, this is not a political channel. The fact of the matter is Sweden is an extremely safe country. My experience here has been very positive in many aspects, regardless of what people may read or hear about Sweden in the news.
    Secondly, it is true that Sweden has taken on an astounding number of immigrants, especially when the overall size of the country is taken into account. There is no doubt this poses challenges, some of which have had an effect me personally. (Even with a Master’s degree and a job offer I had to wait over 4 months for a work permit)
    With that being said I have worked with students from many war torn countries: Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia just to name a few. They are some of the nicest and most well mannered students I have ever had the privilege of teaching. And after hearing their stories, hardships, and things they’ve had to go through in their home countries I have to applaud Sweden for making the effort to give these people a better life when no other country would offer a helping hand.
    Whether or not we agree with how Sweden has handled the immigration situation (again this isn’t a political channel and I’m not inclined to comment on this) I think we can all appreciate the fact that at the end of the day they’re trying to offer the chance at a better life to those in need.

      The funny thing is that we are already taking care of this problem. Immigration has been slowed down since last year and we are looking to help the INTEGRATION for these immigrant communities now instead. Sweden isnt on fire people, get real.

      The majority of stories saying how terrible things are in Sweden originate in the USA. I live in the UK, but work takes me to the USA and I often go to Sweden on holiday. I don't feel safe or comfortable in the USA. Sweden's biggest slum, Malmö, is a veritable paradise compared to San Francisco, Boston, Chicago or New York. I have never felt unsafe in Sweden. The worst things I have witnessed there are garden variety scams that you see everywhere in Europe and that has more to do with Balkan crime rings than the refugee crisis.

      Both Sweden and Norway sucks compared to Denmark. Denmark is the best country to live in and have fun (events,restaurants,nightlife...), Norway is good for hiking and the forest (they have the best nature in Scandinavia - it is battling with Finland, but Finns do not have fjords). And Sweden, well it's in between Norway and Denmark geographically but also in terms of mentality: They're not as open as Danes, but not as closed as Norwegians.. In terms of events, you can have fun, but its nothing like DK... Oh and the clothing: they copy a lot the Danish Copenhagen style... The trend in DK becomes the next trend in Sweden after 7-9 months.
      PS: I'm Swedish and for NO reasons would I ever want to move back to Sweden.
      Denmark is a better version of Sweden in many many ways - politically too.

    As a person from Sweden I can confirm that these things are accurate. xD And about that about the English, we start learning English when we're about 7 or so in school and continue for a little more than 10 years (depends on someone's personal choices when you get to choose your own classes after you're 16) and plus, I'm just going to be honest and say that we're generally on the Internet a lot. xD A LOT of TV shows and series, are in English, and you can't forget the youtubers, so that boosts the learning.
    (The English is kind of taking over though, it's gotten to the point where we have quite a handful of words that are borrowed from the English language, plus some people Swedish-fy some English words)

    • @StefanThyron
      @StefanThyron  Před 6 lety +29

      I've noticed that a lot of swedes use English words throughout the conversation. This is kind of nice for me though when I can't think of a word in swedish haha

    • @roselotus1031
      @roselotus1031 Před 6 lety +11

      Stefan Thyron Yeah, and the tendency to use English words in conversations is getting more and more common. There are some cases where there isn’t a 100% accurate Swedish definition, like for the word awkward, or words like "cringy" where there is literally no definition in Swedish.

    • @StefanThyron
      @StefanThyron  Před 6 lety +15

      That's very true, or like 'fancy' I heard is another one.

    • @roselotus1031
      @roselotus1031 Před 6 lety +6

      Stefan Thyron Yeah, I’ve heard that one too. I’ve also heard some people say "guys" while addressing a group of people, not necessarily only males.

    • @roselotus1031
      @roselotus1031 Před 6 lety +7

      Sam The Sham I don't see where I'm "lying"? I didn't say anything about CSN or buying books or anything like that, just about the amount of years you get to study English in "grundskolan". It does depend on where in Sweden you live but the difference shouldn't be that many years. And "pinsam" and "skämmig" aren't really the definitions of awkward to me personally, since you can be in an awkward situation where you're with someone you barley know and neither of you are talking, but are trying to find something to talk about. That's awkward, not embarrassing.
      I'd rather say that "stelt" is a better translation, but I think that the English word awkward has more definitions that can be used in different situations but within the same category, and that there's no Swedish word to cover them all.
      And I know that there are Swedish words for fancy, I never said there wasn't for that word.

    One thing that should be mentioned when talking and comparing the prices in Sweden vs america is that, in Sweden, ALL prices are including tax (moms), where as in america the prices are exluding tax. This means that the price on the pricetag in Sweden is the price you actually pay where as in america it's the amount on the pricetag + tax. This could very well be the reason why it seems that Sweden is more expencive. ☺

All we get are trolls who've never been anywhere near here, who don't know anything about our society or history, acting like self-proclaimed experts because some right wing fake news site like Fox or Breitbart ran a propaganda piece against us in order to further their own domestic political agendas. It's gets old real quick.
      Have you been here? Have you studied Sweden or Swedish culture? Do you follow our political debates? Do you understand Swedish laws?

    The “saying hi to your neighbors” part depends on where in Sweden you live. In the smaller cities and towns it’s almost an obligation to always say hi to your neighbors when you see them (at least where I live). In the bigger cities however it can be very different, and I’ve even noticed myself when I’m visiting bigger cities that the people are more “cold”.

    80-90 crowns for a beer? Dude, you need to come down here to Malmö. You'd be hard pressed to find a place that would charge you more than 50. By the way, that part of "staying in their own place" was very accurate. I visited the USA in 2006 and one thing I noticed, that was different from Sweden, was that my presence was immediately recognized and the store-clerk would greet me in a cheerful voice. Not so in Sweden. You need to adress them for help. That might seem rude to some, but for us it's natural not to impose on other people's "own place" and we will not enter - not even verbally - unless invited (I hope my metaphores aren't getting to complicated).

      When I was younger growing up in Sweden, the store clerks used to come up and ask if I needed any help. It felt artificial and intrusive and almost as if they just wanted to make sure I wasn't shoplifting. They've stopped doing that now, I guess the friendly approach was too much for Swedes, and the store clerks who of course were also Swedes were equally as uncomfortable about it. :)

    bit "fake" and the that is a bit the way most Americans are, fake smiles
    and fake kindness. we can still be polite without the "fakeness" ( not
    talking about the clerk giving a smile at the customer etc. )

Threat people like shit and trust me Swedes can treat people like shit back.
      Just because we're not "loud" and take space I can assure we can be rude if treated bad, but there are exemptions to rules in everything and that goes for Swedes as well, there are plenty of a-holes here as well and especially the newer "internet" generation, they never learned what consequences are the worst that can happen on Internet is that you get blocker, banned etc.
      But hey, have a safe trip and glad you get back to your happy place ;)

    • @AndyWoohoo666
      @AndyWoohoo666 Před 6 lety +1

      Yea I know about it since I had an American fiance and we both lived in US and in Sweden, however with fake I do not really mean fake but more like not a genuine smile.
      We Swedes in general do not smile at things we do not have reason to smile at, we seem to be a bit uptight etc.
      But for example, I was raised by my grandpa and he always said, "don't talk if you don't have anything to say...people talk to much" with that he meant not to not talk but do not waste time and air yapping. I think we are a bit the same in many other ways, I do not waste "love" on strangers but then I give those I hold dear so much more instead. So more as put effort into what counts and do not waste time and effort that you good give to something that might deserve it, sort of.
      That maybe came out a bit harsh but something in those lines.

      Andy Woohoo German here.
      I can't really compare it to other places that much but even in my own country I kind of feel out of place.
      I smile or greet people on the street in my village all the time(not like all people when I'm out, just in my neighbourhood) and rarely do they smile or greet back.
      And I don't consider it being fake myself, although I know some people do this stuff to look nice when they're really not so much.
      I just think it's polite and on the rare occasions people do smile or greet back, you can see that they are happy about it.
      Sometimes I wonder if all the influence from watching a lot of TV shows and such has taught me certain things or what it is.

These days you don't want to walk alone at night through certain areas of the towns. It still is not that much worse than in most other countries but Sweden used to be exceptionally safe back in the days and now it's an ongoing change towards the worse. Swedes under the age of 25 might be too young to be aware of this change but for those of us older than 35 it is very much apparent. I feel sorry for the kids these days because the childhood during the 80-90's was way better. Today's youth do not know what they are missing.

Of course the Swedes warm up to this guy much more because he's from the US and Swedes realy love America. I come from the Czech Republic and Swedes looks so much down upon us Czechs. I've even got asked if we have Internet. We have free schools and student support as well and apart from Sweden, we have realy good, accessible and FREE health care. The maternity leave is 3 times longer. And we've had wireless credit cards for 6 years now where as in Sweden they introduced it recently and only a handful of places accept it. The guy in the video said that he's been living in Sweden for 5 months so of course he's still excited. I was too in the beginning but after a year I realized how many misleading information is out there about this country.

      Starts with SD complaining and of course the supporters (mostly motivated by fear and ignorance). They gain political traction which in the end makes S and M ape after too. The result is that doomsday prophecies are just about everything that is heard and parties have to talk tough on crime just like politicians in USA have to appear "tough" on defense. It makes everything dumber.

    English as a subject in school starts in 3rd grade at age 9 here since the late 60s. In the 7th grade students can chose a third language of their choosing usually German, French or Spanish. The subtitles on TV are of course helpful but I don't think learning languages are the reason we do it this way. English has been a subject in school here since 1850s (I googled). Before TV there where movies with subtitles. Compare this to eastern Europe and there's no English - period. In 1939 we changed the official second language in school to English (from German). So I'm just assuming it would have been very awkward to have Swedish actors do voiceovers in Swedish. Everyone can read and we don't miss out on Humphrey Bogarts original voice - a win win. 👍

      American media would have us believe that every country in the world that is not the U.S. is dangerous.
      Statistics I pulled from Google articles just now:
      Gun deaths in Sweden have quadrupled from 2012 to 2018. There were 37 gun related deaths in Sweden in 2018 (whole country)
      Gun deaths are down in Los Angeles for a five year low or 256 gun deaths in 2018 (just in Los Angeles)

    • @awesomejimthethird
      @awesomejimthethird Před 5 lety

      @@taitjones6310 Well gundeaths in sweden can't really be compared to the US, For one everyone can't own a gun in sweden,We do not have it in our constitution that every swedish person is allowed to bare arms.
      So ofcourse there are less gundeaths in sweden, the important thing is that they have increased, It shows a pattern.
      That's what statistics are for.

    • @taitjones6310
      @taitjones6310 Před 5 lety

      @@awesomejimthethird Yes, gun deaths can be compared from one country to any other. What else would you compare them to ? Apples? Tomato sauce??
      It's a reflection of the stability of a country's culture.
      And for starters its "bear arms", not "bare arms".
      And no it isn't legal anymore. That is a misconception from people who don't live in the US. One, you have to register to own a weapon, and anyone with a felony conviction in their life is not allowed to own one.
      Secondly, the majority of gun deaths are from people with unregistered weapons. Which means they are all purchased on the black market and it is thriving.
      The reason that you can compare US to Sweden (and should) is that a market for anything pops up where there is a demand for any product. Economic instability breeds crime and crime demands weaponry.
      The reason we have more gun deaths here is because there is more inequality, and hence more crime, and therefore a demand for weapons.
      The "Right to bear arms" is not written into our constitution for the purposes of hunting, shooting for sport, or even self defense. The Right to Bear Arms was written in so that the citizens would always have more weaponry than the Government and would be able to rebel and overthrow the Government when it became corrupted and no longer served the people.
      Our military oath includes a lines "sworn to protect the constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic", the "domestic" part of that was originally meant to refer to corruption within the state, although in modern times the meaning has been twisted so that now people take "domestic threats" to mean anyone who opposes our corrupt state.

    Hi, just wanted to say that one (!) reason eating out is way more expensive in Sweden than in the US, is that tips is included in the price, and so the waiter's salary doesn't depend on tips :)

    Here in Sweden, u talk English in every school, in some only in English lessons but in some schools, you ONLY got the English language in every class like Math, SciFi, Music, History etc. And what u're saying it's true, u learn a LOT English on the internet by watching CZcams, reading stuff online and also by watching movies!

    The comments here makes me sad... we have ALOT of immgrants, some are my best friends and they are great! Some are loud and more intense but they aren't raised in the same standards. Seeing all the ignorant people yelling about all the bad stuff someone told them just makes me feel bad. If they think Sweden is in such a bad state even though it's one of the best places to live shows how bad they are being treated by their own goverments. Ignorance is terrible!

      ClassicAdden you are being lied too. Police are hidding crime rate figures from the general public. Same thing happening in the UK. 1000 of girls were groomed by Pakistani men and the police and bbc hid the truth for as long as possible. Same thing happening in Sweden and many other wealthy European countries. Time to take the red pill. It is time to wake up. If you need the truth, let me know.

      I know the truth, i just don't rant about it online. I will defend my country when people go out of line because it's the right thing to do. Immigration is a problem, but people are getting told that there is basically a war going on and people are getting shot in the street. Sweden is one of the safest places in the world and people shouldn't be lied too. I'm a police officer so i know the numbers. I just try to be a good person by any means.

      Then I can only hope that the media tells the truth in your country. In my country (Netherlands) maybe not so great media coverage. But anyway you are right, your video is not meant to be about immigration. So good video overall.

    People should specify that "FREE", means a productive third party paid for the goods/services one has received.
    Say like " taxpayer approved"
    or "agency subsidized".

    I enjoyed this so freaking much because I get to hear the opposite culture shock. I moved from Sweden to the US and you hit the nail on the head. Now, I'm from outside of Umeå in the north where there are a lot of small towns and a lot more people willing to interact with a stranger than in bigger cities or the south. Here in Minnesota I feel like there are traces of that, but yet again I'm in small town life kinda. We have had lovely strangers stop their day to help and it felt so home! The nature is super similar too, but.. I still had a major culture shock. Biggest one, beside measurements, is tipping. It's been 5 years and it still intimidates me. Another is the pride. I used to fear being proud of my country because then you will be called a racist, but over here I could be proud finally and it was liberating and definitely improved my confidence. I no longer had to be afraid of speaking my mind, to stand out, and I wouldn't as easily make a scene. I didn't have to be lagom, though I did land back on it after unleashing pent up self expression. The wildlife was a culture shock.. I miss hedgehogs and Swedish squirrels, I do love opossums, eagles, turkeys and hummingbirds. I miss clothes in my tiny size that looks grownup! And yes the prices, I struggled to not overspend because everything felt so very cheap. I struggled so hard during the withdrawal of Swedish coca cola flavor, the candy and the chocolate. I most definitely miss using my language verbally.

      Probably, but in general Sweden is a more expensive country than many other parts of the world. I lived in Shanghai for a year, which is one of the most expensive parts of China. A restaurant meal at a descent restaurant went between 20-50kr, a kilo rice at Walmart was about 3-5kr. I lived like a queen for a year on CSN.
      Rent on my appartment was sadly 5000SEK/month, but I am from Gothenburg and it's hard ti find cheaper apartments for that size. It was almost 70 square metres, for myself. No roommates.

      Sweden have a lot of taxes on everything, making it more expensive than some of the other countries in the world.
      I emigrated, and where I live you get 20 bottles (33 cl) of water for like 10 SEK. I get a pac of noodles for 2 SEK, and a pack of smokes for 8 SEK. I still get the same money in my pocket as I got in Sweden after taxes, as a teacher it’s not a very low salary. I enjoy my new home, very much.

    One of the reasons we understand english is that we have swedish subtitles and studie it at school.
    The conection between the eye, ear and subtitle is a good thing here. Music for instant dont have that.
