Doom Ports on Consoles

- If you’ve followed this channel for a while, you’ll know that I have more than a passing fondness for the Doom games. In fact, I have a hard time deciding if Doom or Super Metroid take the top spot for my favourite game of all time.
This means that I have owned Doom on just about every console I’ve owned that it was available for. And that’s what we are looking at here, a bunch of Doom ports that came to our home consoles.
Keep in mind, I am only talking about official ports, well, apart from the last one, so there’ll be no pregnancy tests or McDonalds drive through screens. Just the ports that came out on consoles. As always though, be sure to shout at me in the comments for any others that I should try in the future.

19:21 The change of medkits cross colour from red to green was done mostly because of a risk of getting a lawsuit from the Geneva Convention. As its illegal to use their Red Cross imagery by any unauthorized individuals, groups etc. The latest example that i remember of getting a law suit because of a red cross featured in game was in Stardew valley and Among us out of all games😭. So they did that mostly because of that.
Ah ok, that explains it. I figured it would be something along those lines. Thanks for the info :)
Doom and I came to the world in the same day same year, 30 years ago an we both are still amazing an ageing like the finest wine. Love all your content, especially doom there brother! Keep up the good work!
Does that make you the Doom Slayer?
@@thereviewsbrothers3854 RIP......and.....TEAR!
I have the Switch version and it's a pretty nice way to play on the go. There's also Android sourceports that allow loading of mods, but then you have to endure touchscreen controls if you don't have a bluetooth controller...
You could just use your Switch controller, only challenge is either propping up your phone or physically attaching it lol.
To be fair, Doom is a great game for on the go. I'd get the Switch one if I had one. I do have it on my Steam Deck though :). Haven't dabbled in mods on there though, only on my computer.
Im pretty sure you can also use mouse and keyboard on the android port (specifically referring to Delta Touch)
So about the chronology of the ports: the Jaguar version was actually the first console port developed but the second to be released (the 32X version came out slightly ahead of it) and was done by John Carmack, which probably explains why it turned out so well. The cuts made to the levels from the original 3 episodes were carried over into most subsequent ports, even the PS1 version where you'd think they would no longer be necessary. The SNES version didn't come out until much later (1995) and was largely developed by one guy, Randy Linden, who made a custom engine to get the game to run properly on the system.
Oh thats cool. Kinda surprising that Jag was first. Carmack's touch explains why it was a good one though!
I was wondering if you were going to consider Quest a console. Very cool to see Team Beef’s work included. Great video!
Yeah, I love me some Team Beef. Currently playing through Doom 3 in VR and its so good! And the Quake games, too.
I've noticed on many VR-footages of different reviewers that horizont is almost always slightly (or significantly) tilted. I also notice that when playing PSVR myself. That means problems with poise probably. Interesting. Perhaps we can use VR to correct our posture.
Great video anyway. Thank you for your work. Can never get enough of Doom videos.
Ha ha. That is very true! I just watched back a couple of my videos after reading this. I need to sort my spine out!
My favourite verisons is Doom on PS1. Its soundtrack is as masterful as the game itself. Really gives it a dark foreboding atmosphere
My first Doom experience was the 32x
well, it could be much worse...
Yeah thats not a bad one to start with to be fair!
Excellent video. Love seeing the console Doom ports getting attention
Glad you enjoyed it. I might explore some of the fan made ones at some point, like on Atari, C64 and NES.
It's like Skyrim, there is a version for every single device and his mother 😅😂
Thanks my dude 👍🏼
Skyrim can only wish it was Doom though :P
Question is... will there be a Skyrim mod for Doom first, or a Doom mod for Skyrim...
@@thereviewsbrothers3854 indeed 😁👍🏼
@@thereviewsbrothers3854 that is a good question 😅
If you aren't playing Doom with a friend using a link cable on PS on two 14" CRT TVs then it's not Doom... But also this is some very enjoyable content!
GZDoom Quest 2 supports VR.
VR in HDOOM!
OH BOY!
Now I hear from a very reliable source that may or may not be myself, that HDoom works very well in VR.
McDoomalds isn't official?
It is in my head! Order myself a McDoom burger.
I had the SNES version and I loved it although flawed. The 32X is impressive.
Great video! It's nice to see all these Doom ports compared to each other in this video. I'm surprised the GBA version has all the levels and runs better than the 3DO version given the limited hardware. Keep it up.
My fav has always been Final Doom. It was the 1st game I owned on PS1 & still have it today
I was two when Doom released, so I didn't play it til later. The 360 version is the first way I played it. Still have it, it's a really good version. I tried getting those multiplayer achievements. I remember getting a match started, and I was doing well but the guy left lol. Then I got into another match (so not hosting this time) and I realized why. The input delay when playing offhost is HORRIBLE. Anyway, I've since played via Chocolate Doom, GZDoom, dsda-doom, and the official version on the Switch. Also yeah, the new version has green cross medkits because the Red Cross complained.
360 version is very good, but yeah those achievements are annoying. Does the Switch one have the add ons? Those are what I'm playing through at the moment. Some are really damn hard!
@@thereviewsbrothers3854 Yeah, the addons are there. I'd rather player 'em on PC though. Mouse supremacy! I haven't played many mappacks yet, I really should.
"Jagwah"
Look up Exhumed and the story of the Saturn port's original rejected 60fps version before blaming the hardware.
Good point. I actually have Exhumed, Duke Nukem and Quake for the Saturn. Haven't gotten round to trying them properly, though. Might do a Saturn FPS video at some point.
@@thereviewsbrothers3854 I look forward to it. Have you seen the new FPS homebrew engine?
No online play for the Ps4 , Xbox one and Switch Port. 360 did.
No mention of the Switch Port?!
I actually don’t have a switch or know anyone that has it on switch (my friends are losers). As far as I know it’s the same as the PS4 version though. Not 100% if it has the add on features.
It's the same as the PS4 version, yeah.
Three frames an hour 😂
Second comment and under 33 views baby!
I bought Doom eternal for ps5 and got my ass handed to me. That game looks amazing but is way too hard.
Oh I definitely recommend sticking with it. Drop the difficulty a bit, then when you're used to the combat loop, you will be ripping and tearing like nobodies business. I went back to it recently (this video was actually going to be on all the games in the series til I realised how many console ports there were) and when I went back to my previous save, I struggled to beat the first and second levels. Really is one of those games you have to re-learn.
Are you the top hat gaming man
I am happy to report that I am not. My voice is much sexier.
@thereviewsbrothers3854 hehe love the video
Hit me up if you wanna make some videos. I'm doing good things for the film and gaming industry
