Lars has changed what traditional policy has been able to do by creating profitable businesses in new and ingenious ways. In his talk from TEDxArendal - he tells you about his company that mainly hires people with Asperger syndrome.
As a former broker manager Lars got bored with the financial sector and started his own IT company where he employs only people with Asperger syndrome or autism. Where few leaders dare to hire outside the norm, Lars Johansson-Kjellerød has made it his business idea.

Yes. I have lost jobs because I didn't fit into the social network at work. I worked, I thought about the job and how to do that job better. I was too focused on the job to indulge in what I thought was idyll chit chat. Thank you for your support.
Same. I even offered to work instead of take lunch breaks and came up with innovative ideas to be more productive. Companies don't want that though

@@MasonStormSunny some fields only allows specialists who are certified such by people in systems that either haven't caught up and/or continue to justify bad (sometimes harmful) behaviors/beliefs/ethics making it extremely difficult if not impossible for the people who would be most beneficial to as a specialist within that area of the field to be recognized, accepted, and properly supported
same here, I had a couple of dozen jobs before I found one where I'm actually comfortable as a remote interpreter/translator: no boss, no-coworkers, just the task at hand. Neurotypicals are tribal, petty, and cruel.
Glad too see someone creating better work environments for Autistics, we need more like this.

How did you handle the social part? The part where people don't want to hear about bugs and problems?
I have Asperger's syndrome. My intelligence is pretty high - 156 points in the Cattell scale which places me in the top 1% of the population. I belong to Mensa. I consider myself truly vastly superior to other normal people in certain aspects - attention to details, analytical thinking, ability to solve technical problems. However, my social abilities are very poor. Why should I care about that if I the world is so interesting? Do I regret that I have that syndrome? Absolutely no. I treat it as my blessing. I feel really special thanks to that. Anyway, I have a wife and a child. I lead a pretty normal life. It's all about understanding of your partner - your strengths and limitations should be known. Speak about them loudly.
When I was a kid they called my Asperger's being "gifted". I got along much better with the gifted kids and most of us went on to computer related careers

I am a very good example of that. I have Asperger's and superior intelligence. I ended up in the IT world and I have a very successful career. On the other hand, my social abilities are very poor.

I have Asperger's and when I was younger, I assisted in the development of software, generally from the viewpoint of whether the software was user-friendly, intuitive. Generally, I did well out in the work world because I could see the holes in plans, regardless of the type of work, very quickly.

I was disciplined by my boss fo being a little too exact in enforcing the school's cell phone policy. I had a nervous breakdown because of it. I had already lost so many jobs for being the person who was so exact about rules. 4 years later, I was referred by my therapist for an autism diagnosis given my series of mental health episodes, rigidity, sensory issues, and inability to remain employed.
You can go back and say that you did what was expected. They can’t fire you for doing what you were supposed to do surely.
I experienced the same thing working in a school. They forbid me from wearing an ear plug and show me attitude when I ask a question, telling me in a reluctant way that it ‘makes sense for you to ask about that’. I am autistic but I can also sense emotions of rejection. They soon fired me because I am not able to consistently have lunch with a large group of colleagues. On the last days at work I would spend 10-15 mins in the empty sports room that smelt old but no one’d be there to force me to mask for them
I’m autistic & in tech sales. I’m fairly blessed to have good social skills, but I excel mainly because it’s so process driven & I’ve always been able to understand intricacies of the product better than my colleagues, and effectively communicate them in a simple way. As such I’ve literally always been top performer! Great vid

This has helped me to understand the potential of people with autism. I am having a meeting at my 13-year-old grandson's school today to get some help for him which up to now has been ignored by the education system who I understand want to put him in a special needs school because he does not fit the school stereotype pupil. It would be great to find out what his strengths are and extend him. I will comment further after the meeting

I have Asperger's myself, make sure your grandson isn't so distracted by his difficulties. I assume you know autistic people perceive the world in a different way, by my perspective there's not a big difference between autistic people and nonautistic people.
Both have difficulties and both need support with their difficulties.
There's also a lot of myths and falsehood online regarding Autism. For example, individuals with Autism don't really have social deficits, autistic and nonautistic people can socialize equally well, the difficulty is to do with who they socialize with.
Through my experiences I came to see autistic people have one rule book about how to socialize, but nonautistic have a different socializing rule book. It's the mismatches between the two books that cause the difficulty.
One of the rules in the autistic rule book is to talk about what we're interested in, talking about his interests is part of an autistic person's wellbeing, it can prevent the brain overstimulating so they don't get overloaded by what's happening around them.
Ask people to listen for what your grandson talks about the most, we like talking about what we're interested in for a pretty wide length of time.

I have repeatedly heard and read that companies are inclusive, nothing more distant from reality. It is good to see that one's type is genuinely appreciated, at least in one place; and not because some appearances need to be maintained.
The diversity thing started years ago and its getting worse. It seems they are pushing for places to be diverse while still maintaining their standards and numbers (like schools, college, med school, grad school, etc). They will say they are diverse, enroll a few diverse people and use that as their poster. Its very plasticy. Academia is the worst offender. I actually am not in med school right now bc of the plastic education system.
Yes, I agree with this video. I work in IT for many years, also what helps with autism and IT is the fast jumping to conclusions and thereby solving the problem.
I've been doing software testing for the past few years myself. Before my diagnosis not too long ago, during the testing of the software, I would reach levels of focus that were so intense, it freaked me out. I worked 14 hrs some days and I wouldn't even notice the time. I was so obsessed with the particular work I was doing at the time that I would walk to my car late at night running the problem in my head over and over. I just couldn't let go. Then this led to burnout, and I've had no choice but to cool it down and keep myself in check just for my own health and sanity. I try to keep it under control now.

I'm late in life diagnosed about a year or more ago now. And just recently with ADHD. Living in a small rural town in Maine, I have felt trapped by the lack of understanding about myself and the world. I wish there were more resources available for me... thank you for what you are doing
I love the medical aspects of the human body. Ever since I was four, I was reading anatomy books, Drawing the blood stream and various body cells. I loved going to the doctors, specialists and medical professionals; who were immersed in such learning and achieving amazing breakthroughs within their experiences within the vast spectrum of scientific discoveries on all fronts. I would ask many questions and be very thankful to have learned from them (even if it was just a little bit of information.) I would watch various medical documentaries and programs detailing anatomy, physiology, biology and pathologies of the human body under various conditions, injuries, diseases and unexpected changes. The soring highs of a successful heart transplant patient.. able to finally run around and live life to the fullest; to the unfair lows of of a person who had battled so very bravely in the face of cancer... But who never did let said diagnosis define them indefinitely as a different person. I am now studying to become a AIN... and I am finding most of the units easy as it sparks the retained information from my earlier years of being ''obsessively" captivated by Human anatomy... and all it's systems. It is this obsessiveness.. and the longing to learn more about the vast pool of possibilities to ensure that the health of humanity expands outwardly for the better... that is assuring me, that even though I may not be socially able all the time? I can still care for people who need it... and perform my duty of care to all... by my logical thinking, my attention to detail... and my ability to not see ''Normal.'' My disability...? Aspergers..... is an ability!!

@Syd Barger it is not difficult to be nice, be empathetic and be willing to assist anyone to the best of your abilities when they need help. Most people with autism and similar disabilities actually put in more of an effort into providing such needs through actions than those who don't have any disability. Why? Because we know how cruel and horrible most of the people in this world can be. I've lost faith in many people because they see only the diagnosis of the disability and not the soul standing right in front of them coming to grips with what it could spell for their futures.
@@rileygraham8952 there are many labels. Autism is the main one. But there are others that indicate different levels. Asperger's is also identified as ''High functioning" Autism. Etc.

What is needed is understanding and compassion. If someone is understanding, flexible and let’s autistic people do things on their terms, you won’t get better results or more conscientious workers.

He's talking about not neglecting which precides with 'norm' thus creating which 'not' - for who are worth which more (but not so suit to our own conception and so 'preference'!)
I struggle with social networking so hard but I'm a accurate worker. I love my work and did it with passion. But thats not enough. I don't fit in. It hurt so much. Again and again. But i never give up. I find someone like this man who knows what's the real reason to work.
This is what my son needs. He also has Autism, Aspergers, strussles to findwork, is on disability because of this. But he Loves Computers, tech, coding, learning etc. This company would be the perfect answer for him, if only there were more like this.🙁
Instead of finding work perhaps he can create a job for himself.
If he knows what he loves to do, what he’s passionate about and how he could use that in a job situation, like what would he feel would be a job he would like to do, and that he knows he could do well. What environment will he need in order to perform this job so he can be satisfied with his efforts?
Then start thinking, where (company, field e.g) would his skills be advantageous to an employer? Next step is contacting a potential employer and convince him/her/them that they need him to perform that job for them. How would they benefit from employing him? What assets can he bring?
Basically convince them that here is an employee they can’t afford to turn down, even if they have to create a new position specifically for him.
Many actors end up with a role that wasn’t even in the original script, but because the instructor/writer or whoever hire actors saw something special in them, they end up creating a role that fits that person perfectly. An example of that is the curly haired boy in “stranger things”
Does he like hacking? There are so many places that need good hackers now a days.
That is so me, I mean Aspie me. As a scientist and innovator, I owe my little bit of success to that: seeing the detail, seeing what others don't see. And it's so strange sometimes. I get these ideas, hopefully good ideas, then demonstrate that they work. Then people ask: but that's so easy, easy to copy, why is it so special? Well, I don't know, I mean, people have been looking at that problem for years, and never thought about that. Why they don't see what I see, I really don't know. And then, of course, they steal your idea and make money with it. Because that's what NT people are obsessed with, making money, especially if they don't have to work for it. And as an Aspie, I really don't care about it. But they don't realize that if they hired me instead, or invest in my company, they would have all the future ideas that I haven't had yet. People seem to think that if you had a good idea, it's just luck, and it will never happen again. Because they don't know what it is to be like that, they look at things the way I do, or other Aspies do.

A company walked away with my ideas in the hopes of cutting costs and not having to pay me. As of the ability to see more by us, Aspies. I totally agree with you in that aspect. I managed to identify a technical issue in the product which was owned by thousands of people and it was available for a couple of years. When I encounter a challenge I literally crash it - my mind is so around it that I entirely destroy such a problem with the power of my mind.
The part about autistics having more left brain ability is not quite correct.
Neural atypicals like myself have more symmetrical brains than neural typicals.
That means we process information procedurally better, and can usually find unique patterns others can't.
Which can lead to unique solutions, and make us creative, and highly emotional, but in a different way than a NT.

I have heard a number of these videos and I have been misdiagnosed for a very long time. I would like to find someone like him that has an environment that I can excel in unlike what I have been in for many decades now... Beautiful. Brings tears to my eyes. My son was severe Autism. I always knew he was gifted, so I worked to recover health and brain function through biomedical interventions and ABA therapy. He now is Aspergers and has job potential and life potential. Ty to the beautiful people who see the gifts these people have. 🙏

I have aspergers and I didn't make it through this video because the uncomfortable pausing between words make it very boring and kinda taxing but good on you for making a place for people like us
I felt that. The long pauses were awkward and I was like "Keep going". Then I was like "Maybe he's a little nervous and is trying to organize his thoughts". My curiosity far outweighed my impatience. While the pauses were annoying and agonizing, it was worth it for me. I mean, I'm no techno wizard person because that's not my passion, though I'm curious about it. I deal with poetry and writing, which is my main focus and passion. Right now, I'm thinking, "How can I word this comment better?" to "You know what? Who cares? You don't have to be perfect all the time at something you love, as long as you enjoy doing it, unless it's a job so you have to try." I don't care much how I write on this comment/reply, because it is not my job, and I am not writing a novel or poem. It's simply to get thoughts out in an efficient way, rather than a creative way. I'm very analytical with my thoughts and emotions, the thoughts that provoke emotions, and the emotions that provoke thoughts. Now if only I found job where my poetry and writing could be useful/appreciated within an autistic community...

Any recommendations on where people with Aspergers can go to test their strengths and see what career path they should take?
I’m curious how many people truly understand that what was formerly known as Asperger’s in the past pre-5 DSM isn’t “the mildest form of autism” but in reality, the most useful distinction between it and the rest of the spectrum is the lack of speech delay.
If someone has sufficient dyspraxia that affects speaking, there is no useful distinction there to be made.

This video made me have an epiphany. I've been waiting until I can get in to talk to a doctor but I theorize I'm on the spectrum. And by trade, I deal with lots of information while also dealing with lots of sensory input. It's gets so tiring. I never feel like I can get enough sleep. And the guy napping on the floor really struck a chord with me.
I'm Asperger Syndrom and I think he's right about everything he said. It's very personnal, I take it personnaly, cause I know in France, it's not the same Way for people with autism. I feel it every time and every day. I would like more people like him in the entire World, to help the others, like me.

I have Asperger's myself and have been studying it for over 20 years, including the difference in our brains and where these thinking patterns and gifts come from.
The main area of the brain affected is the occipital lobes at the back, the variation makes our brains work in a systematic way. Now considering how autistic people behave makes a good explanation.
• Routines
• Patterns
• Consistency
• Uncomfortable with changes
• Detail Orientation
All these traits are principles of a system.
Autistic people are best at;
• IT
• Architecture
• Mathematics
• Music
• Accountants
and other things down those lines, as you can see, all these activities work with structure and a system.
It's even hypophisised that 90% of technology came from minds of people on The Autism Spectrum, all technology is systematic.

doubt it. diversity is awesome, but i don't believe in anyone being objectively better than anyone else. everyone is good at some things, bad at other things, but nobody's really superior.

Most of you guys do IT. It's odd for me. I'm a female and I work in engineering too but I work more specifically in the Civil Engineering field. I've met some odd creeps in online gaming that hacked and doxxed other gamers things and this field (computer science) has been a turn off, not that it ever appealed to me to begin with. I'm a little more visual-spatially inclined.
I have to be clear, Im not confident to say I have aspergers, but I think I can confidently say that I have ADHD. It's a Neurodiversity Movement and we both experience a difference in brain variation.

I read somewhere that asperger's and autism are different. Asperger's the less type and does not have speech delay.
It was kind of deleted as a diagnosis and included on the DSM 5 as part of the Autism Spectrum Disorder because it had too many criteria that was basically the same, so autism and asperger's is basically the same some people use "high or low functioning" labels but the thing is it's a spectrum so there's no way you can compare one ability to function from other because everyone is very unique and have their own struggles.
So no, they are not different, it's the same just with different name
The DSM-5 now classifies it by support needs/ levels 1,2,3 but those supports/needs can change day to day for anyone with any level of autism.
“mildest”. Sorry, but I hate that designation. True, I have less daily tasks requiring assistance, but maybe it’s my Autism that hates words like “mildest”. It’s really subjective. Just my thoughts

I have trouble that he is not naming any names, and describing everybody as "people with Asperger's" as if everybody is the same. And, trust me, not every person with Aspergers is good at software testing.

If I may interject the following information: you need to figure out how you learn and be aware of how the learning materials are being presented. If these two don't match its the same as being taught science in a different language. You are forced to translate everything. Just my two cents but for the visual learners courses should be taught in videos.....Education is very cookie cutter and they expect everyone to adapt.
