I used to work in Jax and a lot of my work involved traveling all over the city and anytime I had a call to the northside which is where most of the violence is my boss would ride with me and he was armed, if I got the call after 5pm we wouldn't even go until the next day. I left Jax in 2000 and don't miss it a bit.
The northside and downtown were bad 20 years ago and now the cancer has spread everywhere in the city. Civilized people are packing up and moving to St. Johns County.

I am from a poor community myself and spent so many years trying to get beyond that and never once felt I needed to depend on a gang for that. There's so much in this world they can do apart from that to build a life that is fulfilling and they disregard and seem uncaring about that. It's like if I can't be afforded an opportunity to be accepted or desired by the economy whether it's its private sectors of industry or play a sport, sing or rap, I need to grab a flag for my future aims as a person. Is it hard to understand their own anxiety and frustration with that? No. It's is that they seldom attempt to explore the world before committing to things like that before they ever truly inspect and attempt to do otherwise when they're still incredibly young, haven't traveled, arent interested in higher education or willing to try if they can't do their smoking, pills, or drink or not rise early for obligations that don't provide monetary gratification and survival beyond that present struggle everyone alive deals with albeit not in exact similarities. For example, say you grow up in Florida. There's other states to explore, tuition paid for largely for government grant, apprenticeships aplenty...and more. You and your friends abort that for trying to live some fantasy of being the next Supreme McGriff, Tookie Williams, Ricky Ross or Rich Porter instead. You can work when you want, no bound by a forced schedule mostly, no authority to answer to, and no fear of rejection outside of not adhering to gang code. But you are then placed in a box with that itself, along with chances jail, death or addiction now become serious damaging influences on not just you but your families and communities with wars that truly have no winner. After the body count rises, safety aborted to watching ones surroundings in advance of a rival erasing you permanently, or your friends, or relatives with home invasions, etc. Shootouts in places where civilians frequent as well as young children or teens. It's all bullshit to me.
For some reason they love this lifestyle. Nobody forced them to live like this. There's plenty of jobs n college opportunities like you said. I keep seeing people saying its the white man's fault. While there are some innocent people in jail/prison(which is horrible) the vast majority of the people in prison are guilty and deserve it, but *all* slaves were wrongly taken and none of them deserved what happened to them and their families. People need to stop equating these two things as it's actually an insult.

I feel more sad for Zion and His sister. His sister didnt deserve any of the violence she endured. She was just sleeping on a couch when Atk threw a brick through a window and started shooting inside. And they tried to kill her after she survived the first shooting because she was a witness. Very evil men💯 She got shot 14 times and survived. She literally had nothing to do with anything. Was just sleeping on a couch 😪
