Meister Eckhart sermon 20a: A man made a great feast, translated by C. de B. Evans.
Meister Eckhart's sermons as translated by C. de B. Evans volume I (1924). These are the best freely available translations of Meister Eckhart's works in English.
They are presented in the order that they appear in the critical edition, not in the order that they appear in Miss Evans' book. She did not have the critical edition of the manuscripts when she did the translations. I have omitted the pieces that she translated that are not Eckhart's and were not included in the later critical edition. This should make it possible for you to hear a respectable and useful translation without having to wonder if the works are genuinely Eckhart.
These were not labeled in the original text. I had to manually sort through and figure out what each one was and map them to the final list of genuine texts. Consequently, some texts that appear in the later critical edition are not present in Miss Evans' work. That's why there are gaps in the numbering.
The second volume of her translations did not appear until 1931, which means that it won't hit the 95 year copyright limit until 2026. When it does, I will add them here.
Dr. Johnson teaches philosophy at Georgia Tech. He is the author of Paradox at Play: Metaphor in Meister Eckhart's Sermons by Catholic University of America Press. It includes many sermons never before translated into English.
