  • 1. Chris discusses his Marv Albert impression in an interview with Dave Eggers on November 14, 2007.
    2. February 6, 1986. Chris as Marv #1.
    3. Al Albert's chocolate hockey puck:
    a. January 7, 1986, with Marv Albert
    b. February 5, 1986, with Wayne Gretsky
    c. February 18, 1986, with Teri Garr
    e. February 19, 1986, with Marv Albert again
    3. July 16, 1986. Chris as Marv #2: The payoff, then Chris's brothers "Al" and "Steve" (Matt Wickline and Sandy Frank) and the woman making out (his real-life wife Paula Niedert).
    4. September 18, 1986. Chris as Marv #3, with his sons "Marv, Jr.," "Brian," and "Butch" (Mike Reardon, Matt Gibney, and Darren Higgns) and later his wife (Beth Holland, who played Dave's wife a year later in "An Old-Fashioned Christmas" and has appeared in other LN skits).*
    5. November 6, 1986. Chris as Marv #4, in a trailer for "Marv. A One Man Show" (voice-over by Laurie Diamond). This was a precursor to Chris's half-hour special, "FDR: A One Man Show."
*I had initially ID'd her as "Beth Howland," but YT poster kolst8406 noticed the error.

He was never boring for the exact "hit or miss" reason you list. Always taking chances, never afraid to go deep inside an impersonation, killing it with the most obscure reference. The "good reason" for his underrating is simply that he was too spot-on to appeal to the masses.

I don't think that Letterman ever consistently laughed as hard and genuinely over the years as he did when Chris Elliott took the stage. I've been pouring over a ton of 80's-era Chris Elliott skits on Late Night lately (Guy Under the Stairs, The Fugitive Guy, Conspiracy Guy, Chris as Jay Leno and Marv Albert, etc.) and I noticed that Dave always seems to be genuinely laughing at Chris' performance - and you can tell the difference when Dave is laughing politely, it isn't nearly the same. Somehow, Chris Elliott had a direct line to David Letterman's funnybone. And mine too.

Thanks! I found the intro interview while wandering around some hard drive files I hadn't looked at in years. I had completely forgotten I had this. In fact, it got me to put together the collection.

Elliot is so funny, sometimes I can't even laugh--I just sit there stunned. Like that face he is making at 16:11. Other times, like the Guy Under the Seats, he scares the shit out of me. It's a shame show biz can't really find a better place for his amazing talent.

Absolutely LOL hilarious. Chris shined on Letterman with many great characters, but this was perhaps his best. Of course, knowing Marv Albert helps define it. But overall I miss this type of late night comedy compared to today.

Chris Elliot was great in these because he both mocked and paid tribute at the same time. I've seen many of these now and they do not feel mean-spirited.
