It was tit for tat during the Cold War for the Soviet Union and the USA to set up governments to serve their interests. You had the Iron Curtain after WWII, Cuba, Vietnam, etc.
On the US side you had the Iran Coup of 1953, the Guatemala coup of 1954, the Chilean coup of 1973.

I don’t know if the CIA were involved, but I don’t think they would let their hired guns know they were CIA. That makes no sense. Also having him die with medical procedures, would cost too much money, time and paper trail. That also makes no sense.
Also getting rid of someone without damaging the person’s image. Wouldn’t be their style.

When you start having files on innocent people it says a lot. You are either their enemy or you are planning something against or for them. Good or bad?
Carl Colby did a documentary on Bob Marley but said that CIA were completely innocent. Never even brought up the other side of the story and pretty much said "CIA are innocent because they are the good guys Jamaicans guilty because they bad guys." Makes you really think about Colby's involvement.

Another researcher, Professor Peter Dale Scott, also said that Mark David Chapman went through CIA-developed behavior modification at Castle Memorial Hospital when he lived for a time in Hawaii. Arthur O’Connor headed the New York police district of one million people, where Lennon had lived. That was the way he looked and that was the way he talked.” O’Connor was the second police officer to make that assessment."
