      I know you haven't asked for my advice, but as a fashion design student, if you start practicing your drawing skills now, by the time you get to university, it will make your life much easier because people who draw really good spend less time on things like trying to get proportions right and more time drawing details and doing other useful things. But overall enjoy your time drawing!

    Admittedly, I have no interest in fashion in any way ( my wife can verify this ), but I can see you using your sketch books the same way I did when I was in college. It's not just about drawings, it's about working through ideas in what ever form might be required. Sometimes in the end the sketchbook itself is a finished piece of art on it's own.
    Thanks for showing us.

      Exactly! You're so right! It's really just about getting ideas on a page - so different to what I was used to but far more productive :) Thanks for watching!

      Hi Mia, well done for putting the effort into taking some drawing classes. Don't worry too much about being able to draw well. The main thing is making sure you are able to portray your ideas onto paper and that you can clearly see what you are trying to achieve overall. If you look up original sketches by Givenchy or Karl Lagerfeld, they can't particularly draw well but they were able to come up with good designs which is what matters :)

    When I first started sketching fashion designs I felt a pressure/need to make every sketch perfect and finished. I think mentioning everything specifically in a sketchbook does not need to be perfect is important for new artists/designers. I enjoyed watching your sketchbook tour with the narrowing of your creative direction towards the northern lights, caves and wings.

    I have always struggled with the design development and how to show it in sketchbooks, which is something my tutors stress upon, but after watching your video its really clear! I would love to see a video on fashion research as I am currently finding it difficult to do that and I always overthink about whether i'm going to far away from my main theme/ topic and making a mistake? When do you know when to stop when it comes to research?

    • @EmmaRave
      @EmmaRave  Před rokem +1

      Thanks so much for watching and I'm so happy that it has helped you. In regards to your question about fashion research, what course are you doing? Is it a design course? I think it's important to research different designers, brands, fabrics etc but I think if you are doing a design course then design development is more important. If you are doing a styling course then fashion research is a lot more important in my opinion. You should always have a fairly good knowledge of the industry but put your focus behind the skill that you most want to develop. I was wanting to go into fashion illustration so I would often research illustrators and look at designers sketchbooks ☺

    • @LC-ob2rg
      @LC-ob2rg Před rokem

      @@EmmaRave I am doing a fashion design course, and my tutors tell us to focus on design development and showing it in the sketchbooks so that they can understand our design process and thinking. Regarding research, they tell us to make a research file in which we add pictures, notes and everything we collect (pictures we took ourselves, photocopies of books from libraries and the internet) and even fabric swatches like you mentioned. So for example, if my collection's theme is ocean, I would usually research about aquatic life, coral reef, sea plants, etc., to use in my design development. I was wondering if you could make a video of your research file and explain how you carry out the research process and in which directions you go in, if possible. Thank you.

    • @EmmaRave
      @EmmaRave  Před rokem

      @@LC-ob2rg hey, yes I remember the dreaded hours of research we used to have to do for these projects. Unfortunately I threw away all my research files because I just didn't like them. I maybe could do a video on what I used to do to collect research. I'll have a think and look and see what I have x

    • @EmmaRave
      @EmmaRave  Před 3 lety +1

      Do you prefer womenswear? menswear? Start by picking a theme that is nothing to do with fashion - maybe a photograph or a piece of artwork that you like the look of and try to design some outfit ideas around the colours/design/patterns that you see within the image - kind of like what I did in this sketchbook. What about using nature aka waves, clouds, mountains, flowers.

      I actually really struggle with the same thing as you. I prefer copying from photos etc and I find it hard coming up with the image myself. What I do is get inspiration from a few different designs and images that I like and then combine them into 1 unique design. That will help you think outside the box and then it gets easier :)

    Hello everyone, I would like to ask what kind of sketchbook paper material is used by fashion designers (or future designers?). my bestie graduated with fashion design and I was thinking a sketchbook would be one of my gifts. I was thinking of doing a DIY sketchbook but I wasn't sure if A4 paper is acceptable for drawing croquis using pencils. Hope someone could give me some suggestions, thank you!
