To compare these Kitgum Okello buffoons' overthrow of a democratically elected government to Akena's engagement with M7 regime, no matter how jarring, is a very weak argument at best, and a sorry attempt to shield dangerous buffoons. I mean, look where these Okello idiots got Uganda to! ... The 2 are incomparable and it's a false argument, if you understand that. Besides, this is about these buffoons, not about anyone else. Remember, that national army was a very young institution then. And, like all Ugandan institutions, he had recently embarked on professionalizing, with recent graduates still only making their ways up the ranks!
Don't forget, even the British, who presumably were smart enough, at least to inspire your first name, promoted their own buffoon, Idi Amin, in the Army ranks.
You begin to understand now, that it wasn't a simple case of "appoint buffoons to lead the army", right?

... Besides, look what the 34 yrs dictator M7 has used his "professional" army for.
Genocide against Northerners, brutalizing the population and opposition, national theft, attacking major institutions like courtrooms, parliament, university campuses, the list is long man. Longer than Obote's, Amin's, Binaisa's and any other leader combined!

Obote and all presidents who ruled uganda before M7 made one mistake that M7 came and corrected. this mistake all of them did was not being able to control the army. Their soldiers used to rape women, take by force Ugandans' properties with impunity. Thumbs up to the UPDF for being a disciplined force in which all ugandans have faith.

You can't compare professional soldier's to a terrorist. In the 1980's M7 and his terrorist outfit (NRA/NRM) were murdering innocent civilians in cold blood and disbailizing the country. The job of the Ugandan Army was to kill the terrorist who were killing innocent civilians, what is the problem with that?

@@lemungagenu5103 M7 has betrayed many who have foolishly allied with him including fellow bush fighters that helped to propel him to power. He betrayed president Obote by going to the bush, he betrayed Andrew Kayira, he betrayed those who foolishly followed him to the bush promising democracy and all kinds of nonsense. That is why his former bush colleagues have deserted him in droves. Basigye and many many others. Therefore this phenomena is not unique to the Okello Generals. The majority of those fooled by M7 were highly educated but still were still duped which according to your flawed theory is an impossibility.
Five years before going to the bush M7 was openly threating taking up arms against the government of Uganda. Rather than arrest him and disrupt the terror network, the president warned him that should he make such a move he would be followed and dealt with in the bush. Had the president taken the threat against his government seriously and acted history would have taken a different course. It was politicians who gave M7 space thrive in Ugandan politics and build his network and therefore sowing the seeds of their own destruction for many of them. These are not excuses but facts, events don't happen in a vacuum, its part of a chain reaction.

@okema, also, you seem to forget or are simply ignorant of the fact that Dr. Obote's democratically elected government was overthrown, in a military coup, by the Kitgum Okello BUFFOONS. It was not M7 who betrayed Obote. It was these BUFFOONS. Do not rewrite history.
Besides, Obote had mostly already destroyed the M7 rebel outfit and already reduced them to a mere ragtag group of bandits confined in the mountain region, with M7 himself already forced back into exile with his family in Gothenburg Sweden.
So don't come here and try to mispresent history in defence of your idiotic Okello BUFFOONS! Come on now!!
