    Thanks for the tip on the Rock Exotica mini 'biners. Just picked up a few from a local supplier here in Canada to use with my dynaglide retrieval line. Really appreciate your detailed reviews and recommendations on gear....pure gold for someone like me that is just getting into saddle hunting and trying to put together the best rig I can from the start. After a lot of research, I settled on much of what you use, Canyon Elite, Madrock, Ohm tether locker, dynaglide line and now RE mini-biners. If I decide to try one-sticking, I'll definitely go for the EWO Ulitmate One Stick.
    Keep the great one sticking videos coming.....very much looking forward to the whole series.

  • @WIBloodbrother
    @WIBloodbrother Před 5 měsíci +1

    Hi Greg. Thanks for your exceptional videos. I have adopted a number or your equipment and technique recommendations. Question for you. Hunting in the rain has been something I've traditionally avoided as I am retired and can pick my days to hunt. However, I continue to hear about the success one can have on mature bucks in inclement weather and had intended on gearing up for this in the coming season. Yesterday, I was in the woods off-season scouting and decided to prep a tree overlooking a significant scrape. A brief rain shower came in while at height with my one-sticking gear. Later, as I rappelled down, it was exceedingly difficult to descend. The Madrock Safeguard would not smoothly allow the Canyon Elite rope to slide like it normally does. Only when pulling extremely hard on the lever would the rope slide through. And then when it did slide, it would give way in chunks of rope uncomfortably fast. Have you experienced this?

    • @StaggsintheWild
      @StaggsintheWild  Před 5 měsíci

      Yes. You have to be extra-careful when rappelling on a wet rope, as it will become “grabby” as I call it. What I do is just slow way down and walk myself down the tree much more slowly than I normally do with my “Navy Seal bounding technique”, lol.

    • @WIBloodbrother
      @WIBloodbrother Před 5 měsíci +1

      "Grabby" is the perfect word. Most of the time on that rappel, it took all my arm strength on the lever to even start the rope sliding in the Safeguard. I was concerned about even getting down as, since this was not a hunting situation, I had already dropped my one stick to the ground. I'm six feet tall and 230 (five pounds into a 35 pound weight loss goal). Perhaps my extra weight had something to do with the extra friction through the Safeguard. Hopefully, slimming down by season will reduce the friction and make it easier to slide down with a wet rope. The one stick will be with me on the way down as a backup in case I have to take the load off the rope to work my way down the tree. And I will take caution and slow down. Thanks again, Greg.

The string hits the tree a lot on this shots where the deer come behind the tree. Of course we can wait until they pass but a lot of those shots are walking away with no shot opportunity. Any tips for us guys? Thanks!

      I haven’t looked at their packages … I usually don’t like pre-packaged offerings because I’m VERY picky on my gear. If I have to order from three different companies and pay a little extra shipping to get exactly what I want, I’ll do it. The gear in this video is exactly what I’d buy if I had to repurchase everything again today, even knowing all I do after several years of doing this.

    Do you still use tx5 ?( 2.0 or rayder). What do you think about the covert 2.0 compared to venatic. Should I just get saddle and order linemans rope or get the kit with the 2 ropes ( don't see need for the tether rope since ordering the other items you have listed which will have the 40 ft repell rope which will be the tether unless I am incorrect).

    • @StaggsintheWild

      Yes … this is the saddle I use. I’m not a fan of kits personally because you always end up with something different than I would have otherwise chosen. Get the Kong stainless in 10 mm; that way, the wrench built into the Ultimaider gear hanger strap works perfectly on it should you decide to use that too.

    Why do saddle hunters use the grigri+ instead of the original? Just curious. I've been using the OG for years rock climbing and use it to rappel. It rattles a little bit but some tape fixed it up.

    • @StaggsintheWild
      @StaggsintheWild  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Typically it’s the ability to put the GG+ in “top-rope mode” which allows for an easier rope capture more akin to a Ropeman1 or Kong Duck.

  • @Whoknows1124
    @Whoknows1124 Před 9 měsíci

    so on the rope do you have to tie that knot you have to the quicklink also whats wrong with just buying the sewn loop rope and just putting the quick link on that

    • @StaggsintheWild
      @StaggsintheWild  Před 9 měsíci +1

      You use a scaffold knot to connect the quick link; I show how to tie it step by step at the 18:00 mark of “One-sticking: The Details” (link below). I prefer to tie the knot as opposed to buying a rappel rope with a spliced eye because I can control the quick link better as I use it versus having it just flop around.

    • @StaggsintheWild
      @StaggsintheWild  Před rokem +2

      @@mekhigooden432 Here's the quick scoop: A one-sticking stick is nothing more than a placeholder between your top platform (or step) and the aider. That's it.
      The whole goal of one-sticking is to cut out bulk and save weight, in a nutshell. As such, it makes sense to have the smallest stick possible that you don't have to worry about kicking out on you, all things considered. I know a couple guys who actually climb with 10" sticks.
      Your gains in one-sticking come from your MOVES -- not the length of your stick. I'm going to show in my video next week that you can only reach so high up on a tree -- be it your FIRST move, or with every subsequent move thereafter. As a result -- the only "advantage" someone would have in a longer stick is the length from the middle (where they hold onto the stick and place it onto the tree...) to the TOP. if you're talking about a stick that's three inches longer, well... in reality then you can cut that distance in half and you'd only gain 1.5" in climbing height by going from a 12" stick to a 15" stick. So in three moves (about the most I ever have to make to get to hunting height, you've only gained four inches on me if you use a 15" stick compared to my 12" stick -- and I'll take the weight savings and bulk savings of my stick over yours. :)
      The only caveat to this philosophy is if you have a pack (backpack or saddle bag on an e-bike, etc.) where a 15" stick just PACKS better than a 12" stick... I know guys who will get a longer stick JUST for that reason.
      Hope that helps, and you now have a good outline of what my next video will cover. :)
