This piece has a very special meaning to me. When my wonderfull and special-needs niece died, 15 years ago, she was only 18 years old.
I was so sad after her death, that I wrote and recorded a song in her memory. I had been deeply involved in her life since birth, and often stayed at their house or in hospital with her to let my brother and sister in law get some time to themself and rest. Special-needs children needs 24/7 care. But having one in your life is something so special. They make your heart feel like crushed velvet. Crushed in the sence that you are sad and devastated that they have to suffer through so many hardships. And like velvet, because the love and care you give them is rewarded ten-fold. Those of you who know someone, or is in a situation like that knows exactly what I am saying.
So when she died I became a bit...empty. I needed to honor her in some way. So I wrote special lyrics to Comptine d'un autre été and used Audacity to record the song. I still have the file on my computer, and it is obvious that I was a mix of sad and happy when I performed it. Sad that her life ended so early, but happy that I could make a special song for her, celebrating her life - knowing we had given her all the love she deserved throughout her life - however short it was.
I hope one day I can play it to my sister in law, but she is not strong enough to hear it yet unfortunately. She has been very affected by this as it was a situation that went on for so many years. But when she is ready to hear it, I will sit down with her, hold her hand and let her hear the song of her precious daughters life.
I hope that day will come soon....
Sending so much love to you and for this beautiful story you shared. Please record yourself and share it on youtube. I would like to listen your song. :)

That's music.
Nobody understands but everyone feels it.
The pianist that made it meant for it to be nostalgic joyful and melancholy in memory of an afternoon of a past summer
MARY MRAD yeah, but that’s the composer’s original interpretation of the piece. The beauty of music is that there is no right or wrong interpretation- everybody is free to interpret it the way they wish to. That’s what makes music so powerful.
that's the beauty of music
I'm not wrong in assuming music theorists might understand
even after editing its somehow wrongly written
"Comptine d’un autre été: L’après-midi" translating to "Nursery rhyme of another summer: The afternoon.", from the film Amelie, contains arguably the most well known left-hand ostinato in the entire piano repertoire. It's hard not to feel relaxed when listening to this piece, and in this particularly stressful time, is a nice welcome change.

What's the song at the end?
I think that that song represented two feelings: melancholy and happiness. the melancholy was played by the left hand, while the happiness was played by the right. throughout the song they became for different, but then became the same in the end.
I am 19. But listening to this song i feel like an old man, who saw all the things in this life
Tip: if you try to study this, first learn rh and lh separately. It's easier to learn the piece if you don't combine the hand positions in your head, but play them as two separate pieces (because of the different tempo).
Bonus tip: Don't think too much when you play the hands. Just play them. Don't think at all, actually. Lh is just repeating the same measure again and again.
I can play both hands separetely, but still, I have huge issues to combine them :(
I don't think this should be the first song someone learns on the piano...
Yep, works indeed
If you aren’t doing that with every piece then you’re making life so much more difficult for yourself.
How difficult is this piece? Like how many weeks/months do i have to learn the piano to be able to play this?

I've been playing it for about 20 years now. Mostly at my parents home which is 17000 kms away from me now, while studying for the best engineering French schools for 70 hours a week when I felt about to get crazy, through break ups, in airports, once in front of 300 people. And here I am because I just bought a piano to play for my baby boy to make him smile and make him like music. Thank you Yann.

This is called real music. Nothing in the world releases and catches you the way like music does. Feelings occur out of nowhere. You could be the happiest person on earth, but the next moment you're sad and depressed. This is what makes music great. Sharing a story without even saying words. You can't describe it but you feel it
My brother always plays this song. Every time I hear it, I’m taken back to our childhood home and childhood itself. Now I know what it’s called.
to me, it sounds like the perfect blend of wistful sorrow. it's the feeling of yearning for something you may never have or will have again. whether that is an impossible fantastical reality you've dreamed up for yourself, or something you once had in the past. it could be a former lover, a person who has long passed on, a treasured possession, or the feeling of never experiencing something again. absolutely beautiful cover ❤️
If I went to a funeral and this song was playing I would break.
Same
it was played at the funeral of my grandma
I don't get this honestly. I can see that many people are relating this song to funeral, but I can see it as something positive, something beautiful. Like the moment when you are falling in love.. Anyway, I find Radiohead optimistic, so this could be just a thing of my perception.
it was played at my step fathers funeral
Zvonimir Opancar It can be sad and positive at the same time.
I am so happy.... you have no idea. I stopped learning in grade 3 conservatory at the age of 8 because my parents couldn't afford to get me a full size keyboard at the time. I heard this song over 5 years ago for the first time and almost cried at the fact that I would never be able to play. For me, learning sheet music is very difficult and not intuitive.
I literally got my first keyboard, full size with weighted keys in 2019. I barely play. I picked this up last year and learned the left hand and gave up thinking it was beyond my skills.
Yesterday after a very stressful week, I somehow went to the keyboard and started playing some notes from memory, opened this video, and now today I know the whole song!!!

@@andressanchez7629 in my opinion. They are all masterpieces but No,1 and No, 4 are tied for first. I absolutely loved Ballade No, 1 much more than any other Ballade, then after listening to Balade No, 4 I still thought Ballade No, 1 was better, but then the more I listened to Ballade No, 4 the more it grew on me, and now it's about equal for me, I guess some pieces you love the more you listen to it, like La Campenella for me, at first I only liked the ending but now I love the beginning, and Op, 25 No, 5, Chopin Etude "Wrong Note" at first I didn't like the beginning but I loved the middle section and I listened to it for that, but, now I absolutely love the beginning even more then the beautiful middle, if anything, it's amazing how a classical piece can grow on you.

That is some coincidence! I'm learning this piece right now, too. I recently performed as a finalist at a music competition, and someone performed this piece right after my performance. I know how it feels when you have a piece completely learned, but it's hard to put feeling into it. All the tears drying out
Will you then, be around
When I wake
Drizzling down all that rain
Summer now slowly fades
Don't know who else to blame
Life goes on
Moon wanes
Heart aches
Wherefore
Are they
All grey
I lay
Carefully
So faint
Oh those days
Can't you stay
For my sake
Hide they may
All my pain
When will they
Fade away
Fade away

You can write lyrics for me???
To my music?
play married life from the movie: up! it's so beautiful
Ahhh that would make my day! It's such an emotional piece and the story that goes with it always makes me cry
Snow It's amazing how much emotion was packed into a piece that had no words.
Doy K I know. I plan to play it myself as the next piece. luckily it's not that hard !
Yeeesss! :D
Y E S !!!
I’m am going to play this at my graduation we are doing a music themed graduation ,so excited
Wish me luck !
Few years ago i was listening to this song with my mom on the car. It was when i had just started practicing the piano and i was a little a kid. I remember her turning around smiling while she was driving and saying "do you think you'll be able to play as beautiful as that one day?" And i answered that if ill be able to play this one day it'll be the best day of my life. Playing this now brings back so many emotions...
This song has always encouraged me to learn to play piano. I am saving my money to buy one now.
I will let you guys know when I obtain it!
GOOD LUCK 🤍i want to learn also ! 😢
I'm getting mine this week ! Good luck to learn it !
@@t.t.7705 good luck to you too. I am happy to announce that I will go to the piano shop on this saturday!
Good idea.. I bought a hella cheap one just to start because I was extremely motivated to just get started. I've been playing for 2 years now and I wanna switch it already but just never find enough money to get a better one. Tldr, get a good piano to start with
2 months later how's it going
Yann and Yiruma are two of the best modern day pianists. Who agrees?
Edit: and of course Ludovico too
totally!
Ludovico einodi too
Einaudi is good too
Yann is not a pianist but he is still talented
@@agentdoubleka5045 oh really? I swore I saw a video of him playing this same piece here on CZcams, or maybe it was someone else… can’t remember
I'm the Lucky that I found this ❤
So beautifully presented and always love to hear you play.
When you remember that ur dad left to buy cigarettes 13 years ago and still didn't come back.
This is a bad story.😟😟
Forgive him, if you want to be free.
That's so sad
don’t do this,im going to cry:(
Is that from the Simpsons?
When listening to this song imagine your someplace in a cozy cabin inside watching the outside snow it's beautiful outside and you have a nice sweater on and the fireplace on and your drinking a nice hot cup of coco
SolySamsung TrollySamsung everybody feels it in their own way. Don’t try to impose your feelings over his/hers.
@@lukbrg Amen
Marius :)
And reading a good book
That’s how I picture the song in my mind as well.
I love this song so much, when my father died 10 years ago I learned this song, this was the first song I learned on the piano and it helped me with my sadness so much 🌟❤️ this is a masterpiece for a lot of us in a different way, and I send love to everyone of you reading this ❤️
I dont know if Ive ever come across film music that so perfectly catches the essence of the main character as Tiersen's music. Romantic dreaming, longing, sadness, melancholia, beauty, gentleness. But also hope and curiosity about life.
The title means "Lullaby (or song) from another summer"
Edit: in fact a "comptine" is a song sang for children
• Shydreameress • haha I’m french and you’re right !
@@nicolasmathieu6335 haha en fait j'le sais parce que je suis française aussi 😊
Victoria Abraham la même 😂😊
No hate but you type 5 words in google translate and boom attention from at least 81 people .-.
why in the hell its like a sad tone if its a lullaby?
I’m starting to think that Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2 was just a joke... I hope not
P.S: I just fell in love with this piece in like 3 seconds
Cyrillic well it is a hard piece and his channel is at stake right now because of all the copyright thats happening
1 million subscriber special.
whomsty hates K-pop I’ll wait then.
It should literally just become a meme for the channel tbh
Cyrillic Maybe he’ll do it for his 1 million subscriber special
It took me a few months but I final mastered this piece. Don’t give up people. Y’all can do this! Thank you Rousseau for such a beautiful performance
I really cant do the left part with only 1 hand, any tip u have?
@@egg5878 try to learn it as a pattern but not the keys, keep your hands relatively the same shape the whole way through ( left hand only obviously) and just move a couple fingers at a time at each chord change. 👍
same here....took me weeks to master the 4 LH bars....
@@professionalgiraffe7181 Do you have notes? How can I find the exact one in video for free..
@@berrycake3077 You can google "comtine d'un autre ete sheet music" or use the link in my next comment....they sometimes delete comments with links.
I played it in front of my entire school
Congratulations !
Yann is one of the best French artists I've ever heard of. His accordion stuff is fantastic as well
I see everyone asking for pieces (Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, Ballade in G Minor, Liebestraum No. 3 ...) and here I am simply grateful that Rousseau uploaded.. Thank you for making my Mondays better.
I just wanted to thank you for keeping this song slow, and in the piano/mezzo-piano range the majority of the song.
Most others I've heard play it much faster and much louder, and it just fails to capture the same emotions from me.
Yann Tiersen is a great piece of music to put to this! Song name starts with Comptine something something. It’s about how time passes. Well done
Yann Tiersen - La Valse d'Amélie PLLZZZZ!!!!
You got it now buddy.
