- Coming to America was the dream of millions in the last century. The Greek Line passenger ship, Nea Hellas was the ship of dreams to thousands fleeing Nazi Germany, Greeks and other Europeans yearning for freedom and the bridge to a new life in America. During World War II she served as an allied troopship. After the war she resumed her service on the Piraeus New York route, until 1955 when she was renamed the New York, and served the northern Europe to America route.
This movie was made from contributions of family photos and home movies by those who made those long voyages.and those who served on her in both peace and war.
The stories of these voyages can be found on the ships website at memoriesofthene...
my Father came to America on the Nea Hellas July 9,1952
My Grandfather served on this ship while in Convoys. One voyage was from Bombay, India, stopping at Suez to pick up troops and then onto to Glasgow, UK. He was Charles Fernee of the Royal Navy and was a gunner protecting the ship, so pleased to have found information out about this ship. He died in 1985 at his home in London but never spoke of his wartime exploits.
WOW, Jason!... That is really cool! Thanks so much for sharing the limited information about your grandfather. I wish he had shared his wartime exploits with you. My dad was in the pacific theater during WWII, and he didn't share much of his exploits with me either... Chuck
I cam to the USA on this ship on March 21st.1955 from Athens Greece with my parents, Athanasia and Peter and my two brothers, Nick, and Kosta. We settled in Bethlehem,PA
Along with my parents and 3 siblings, we ventured to the United States on this ship and arrived on July 17th 1950. I have no recollection of it since I was only 1.5 yrs old.
My great grandmother, my grandmother and five of her siblings were on this ship in 1955. ❤️🙏🏼
I am amazed at the courage and the strength on the faces. Simply amazed and touched.
I agree. My parents spoke no English and knew nothing of American life, yet they journeyed with fear and apprehension but mostly courage, to find a better life, and they did! Pop was gainfully employed, mom was a housewife and the 4 of us went to school, got jobs and all have our families... July 17th 1950 was so very long ago! (my youngest sibling was only 18 days old when we left our homeland!)
I was on the Nea Hellas 65 years ago, in April 1953, as a young 9 year old Italian boy. My family and I took this ship from Naples to Halifax. This video brought back many fond memories. Thank you for putting this together...

What a moving combination of video, photographs, music and singing. Thank you for presenting this wonderful video that honors the ship and the courageous people who were "...coming to America".
