  • This is a detailed pruning and repotting video of a 6 year old Jade bonsai (Portulacaria afra bonsai)
I take my time and show you how I prune a Jade bonsai. I do not prefer wire training for Jade plants as they are very quite fragile. Rather I use the clip and grow technique to promote new growth for a thick canopy formation.

The end result was very pleasing. I was kind of stunned by the amount you reduced the plant. It seems as if you took about 40% of it. Have you ever killed a plant with such a large trimming?

Thanks. 😀 haven't killed any yet. In my experience such hard pruning has always yielded good results for me.

I just saved a jade plant a lady was actively trying to kill (not very well) but its got lot of leggy branches and hardly any foliage. All leaves are wrinkled but not dry. I'm reviving the plant but have done minor pruning of dead or leafless branches. Currently it has a tall cascading look (presumably from being in low light in a garage for 2 yrs) ((More like plant torture if you ask me.)) I quite like the look but would enjoy more growth and separation of branches given I can revive it. Fingers crossed. I just wanted to share :)

    • @TheUrbanNemophilist
      @TheUrbanNemophilist  Před 3 lety

Yes its part of the process but it pays in the long run. Actually some bonsai masters believe in completely defoliating the tree once a year to spurt dense growth of the foliage and it also reduces the size of the leaves.

This plant is planted on what type of soil mixture .... please share me the information to get a idea of jade bonsai in future because I purchased a 4 years old this variant and it's still in nursery grow big . I didn't repot yet for any mistakes and lastly the plant may die , I have a bad experience of portulacaria death previously.
I was asking before you repot the plant and please give me a suggestion for getting lava rock , I have brick chips and white small gravels but lava rock no idea.
And after repoting you will keep the plant under open sky ? Because lava rock will hold the moisture for long time and it may damage the plant . Please give me a suggestion.
Lava rock and what is the difference between lava rock and brick chips and gravels . My 2 jade ( small leaves) plant died because I used gravels and sand , charcoal, vermicompost .

Pls watch below video for my bonsai soil mix (click on link in blue)
      czcams.com/video/GdfvAkH6TSM/video.html
You can use brick chips in place of lava rocks. Lava rocks are porous and they hold moisture as well as beneficial bacteria. Keep the plant outdoors but under a green shade net as summers can be extreme.

I have already prepared your suggested bonsai soil mixture same and I planted 2 ficus microcarpa in same bonsai tray as everything (materials) is available in my recent stock . Let's see how it works. I wanna share my new repotted ficus microcarpa that same you suggested. How can I show you the picture ?
And if possible please share me a few pictures of your terrace garden green shade settings as of now my everything is (pole) ready but I can't get the idea of setting of green shade settings and accordingly purchasing from Amazon .
You repot the jade only 1 one trowl of bonsai soil mixture. And then place the plant and for side setting you pour 2 ya 3 trowl of bonsai soil mixture. It's enough for hard pruned jade bonsai tree for future growth ?
Can you please suggest me from where I can buy lava rock , if you share me a few pictures of lava rock closely taken from mobile camera ?
      My whatsapp number --- 9434247055.
      It's my request.👍
