And I recognized someone who is a native speaker: the French speaking part of Africa, Québec, Belgium, Switzerland...all have their accent and are native speakers but it's still possible to notice when someone is not native. That's why I said a soft german/Eastern accent. It's not a bad thing to say, I even said he's very fluent. Being fluent and having an accent is two different thing. Even I who is a native speaker still get told that I have a soft "island accent" and that's not wrong, cause I grew up with that accent while being a native french speaker in France.

Its just that the way they phrase things in modern spoken French is so different from formal written language that I can read and write comfortably but dont know the spoken way of phrasing things. A basic example that I do know is how "where are you" is always taught in textbooks as "Ou es tu?" but people usually seem to say "t'es ou?"
