  • In this week's guitar lesson, you'll learn a slow blues lead in the key of C that you can play by yourself (no jam track needed). I'll be playing out of different positions of the CAGED System as well.

I love these electric “by yourself” videos, I wish you’d do more of them. I like playing electric but I (and I imagine a lot of people these days) don’t have easy access to other people to jam with, and I want to be able to play cool things by myself without needing a looper or a jam track.

I’ve been practicing a whole CAGED pathway on another popular guitar lessons site but kept dragging my feed when it came to applying it to their practice songs.
I always come back to Brian's lessons, listen to his simplified take on things and then practice one of his songs instead.
It just gives these concepts so much more purpose to play his songs AND learn them ‘in the style of’ an artist at the same time.

The wisdom in your videos is so condensed (triads, scales, CAGED, 6th, 7th and 9th chords in different positions,...) that I can spend days and days in a single 20 minutes video, learning new different ways of playing the guitar. It's a bit mentally tiring but for sure it is absolutely worth it. Thank you.

You don't need to be a guitar player to enjoy visiting this site. That was so good, enough to make you want to play guitar, even if you don't. Brian, I find your attack, the varying intensity superb. Thank you for the immense help you put out there.

T bone Walker classic style, very Nice. I know a fellow who lives in this Realm, plays in blues Rockabilly band with upright bass, 3 piece band. Nice lesson. I am old enough played way back in 70's, BEFORE CAGED was ever taught, that is a worthwhile look up on internet search, where or who COINED the phrase Caged system, it was a author for Guitar Player magazine, or one of the Guitar mags, sometime in the mid 80's. We learned most of this stuff by EAR of RECORDS. In the mid to late 70's it was all BOX system stuff. People learning today got it made.

The the G dominant 7 shape off of the A shape was an eye opener as well as the use of it in part 2. I drew a connection on that shape from the first position B7 shape. I was familiar with the movable D7 shape going in but knowing that other shape is really cool too. That 6th moves into the F7 in the beginning was really insightful too. Another great lesson. Been enjoying EP 421 this week too. Might transpose it to C and indulge the key of C for the next week with both and other C blues you've put up. I like the 6ths in there too. Another awesome lesson Brian. I hope to put some of my playing on the members site soon. Thanks

When you do this imporvisation do you count the beats mentally? I mean do you play a 12 bar blues structure? You know like now I go to I, now I go to IV, now I go to V etc.... or do you just change from triad to triad approximately where it feels right? I have a little confusion about this I don't get it just by listening to your composition. Thanks you in advance and also for this wonderful lesson.
