    As much as I love Midge as a character, I totally agree with Benjamin here. You can't form a relationship like that, blow it off with a letter and expect the other to be okay with it. People do that today with ghosting.
    However, I still appreciate this show for acknowledging that every character has flaws, even Midge. So many other movies/shows try to make their leads flawless which vicariously and ironically make them unintentionally flawed. Midge is a very likable character, but she still has flaws. She doesn't always know how to handle a situation. It definitely doesn't justify what she did to Benjamin, but it makes her more human.

    I just hated her for what she did to Benjamin. She didn't left him because she thought he wouldn't be supportive, she did that because she didn't care enough. From the beginning she knew she wasn't in love with him, but it didn't matter as long as she was getting married. Cheating on him with the guy who left her for the secretary was the worst of it!

    Everyone's talking about whether or not Benjamin would've suited Midge or if they should've ended up together, but I think that's missing the point of this scene. This is as much about Benjamin's POV as it is about Midge's.
    The thing is that Benjamin could've, might've, been okay and compatible with Midge's career and choices, but Midge thought she's got men like Benjamin and Joel figured out and would automatically know how they would've reacted. And Benjamin tells her that no, she did not really know that, not for sure.
    And it's refreshing and nice because the show does not shy away from calling Midge - its female hero - out for her arrogance. As Midge begins to find her footing, she also starts to become wilful and arrogantly assured, and she's going through this ego phase of 'finding out how much she controls everything'. And in that arrogance, she's assuming that she knows Benjamin because 'she knows men'. And then the show tells us upfront that she doesn't.
    It reminded me of years ago, when I was first called out by an ex-girlfriend for presupposing how women think and react, because I 'know women' or something, and I never forgot that. And this show goes the opposite way and reminds us that as assured as a woman is of how 'men are' as a group, men can be just as diverse and hard to categorically lump together, and just because one knows Joel doesn't mean one knows Benjamin. Hell, we all thought we had Joel figured out in season 1, and we're surprised to see him develop. It tells us that both us and Midge could be fools who fancy themselves wise, and that going through it and moving away from it is an essential stage of growing as a person. In season 4 the same point is made in the Carnegie Hall scene - once again, Midge has to be taken out of the clouds and out of her perceived stature, or what she's convinced 'must be', and get to learn as the rest of us do, no matter how talented and special she is.

    This is one of my favorite scenes in the series because of how accurately the emotions are portrayed by the actors. It is uncomfortable, and if you've been on the giving or receiving (or each) end of this interaction in life, you understand how poignant it is to experience this. There is something cathartic and uneasy about watching this scene play out and finding mirrors that personally resonate with you.

    I think that all three men in her life, Joel, Benjamin and Lenny fit perfectly with one particular side of Midge. Joel fit perfectly with Midge as a young girl, when she was a Jewish American princess. Benjamin fit well with the divorced, more experienced wife and mother Midge. And Lenny is the perfect match for the comedian Midge, the artist and boheme.

    Midge was right, it would not have worked, but for the wrong reasons. She didn't trust him, and she only saw him as a consolation prize for giving up on stand-up. She implied as much in the conversation. And it would have gotten to him eventually, Midge has no boundaries; we saw what happened with Shy.

They would have been so good together, and he would have loved her for who she is and supported her her whole career (without the judgement and baggage that Joel brings). I know the spoilers said that later in her life she marries over and over, and so many celebrities, but Benjamin really felt like the one

  • @concettasorvillo3719
    @concettasorvillo3719 Před 2 lety +41

    Well, I really liked Benjamin but it was clear right from the beginning that Midge never loved him. He was too much similar to the world she was about to leave, he was a better well behaved and matured Joel, he had nothing to do with Midge life.
    And even if probabily he wuld be smart enough to not feel insulted by the gigs as Joel was, I don't think that in the long run he would like Miriam life with the constantly go out at nights and not be here in the mondane stuff and not be a mother (which Midge definitely is not). And I don't think she likes Joel anymore in that way, he is just somebody she is used to be related at, who knows her and where she can go when she feel overbearing.
    At this point, I really think Midge needs to be fully and complete by herself, not defined by any kind of man.
    Of course there is Lenny, but Lenny is more like the comic impersonifed, he is more a mentor than a lover, like an alert of which the comic can be: the good and the bad. She constantly looked up at him as an example, but in the last two seasons she is starting to grasp also the bad parts of the comic job, the loneliness, the dependence personality (from alchol and drugs), the censure and the possibility that the true comic will led her to end up completely eparated from daylight. When Lenny finally spoke his truths about the comic job, Midge realized that she was wrong all along and this will be good to start renew.
    I think this will be a good mirror to find her balance to be successful but not to end up like Lenny, who was pretty much consumed by his own passion.
    Joel and Ben don't fit at all in this picture.

    • @krisynthiagomez5883
      @krisynthiagomez5883 Před 2 lety +14

      What I thought was interesting is that we may be seeing a reversal of the relationships between Lenny and Midge and Joel and Midge. In the beginning Lenny and Midge started out a friendship of mutual respect, comradory, and affection whereas Joel and Midge started with affection and likely lust so they never really had a friendship, but as they try to navigate co-parent hood and whatever their new relationship is it does seem like a friendship of sorts. Meanwhile Lenny and Midge are developing that romantic element which is very interesting to see.

    They as a couple makes a lot of sense. He gives one thing that Midge really lacks: stability. He supported her dream and also wanted to advance this relationship to a marriage. They can be a great couple
    In a way, this scene reveals one serious pitfall of feminism: they assume all the men are too arrogant and misogynistic to be tolerant. However the truth is there are quite a lot of men like Benjamin that really understood and supported women’s dream. They are confident enough not to get intimidated by a strong woman. It’s a shame that they did not work out and Midge did not realize that she had a chance to have a strong relationship and work things out with Benjamin until this moment. Too bad that he has already left. 🙁

      I don't know if I can get behind a known character flaw (Miriam *always* knowing she's 5 steps ahead of everyone - she's not, we know that) being a pitfall of a societal movement for equality among the sexes.
      If anything, I think it show's Miriam's lack of connection with the Feminist Movement to take listen to all voices in the conversation and to make a non-biased, best decision. Honestly, the way she acts here, and with the relationship with Benjamin, is a traditionally male role (especially considering the time). She may have written the Dear John letter, but that just proves she was heading this relationship and she treated it as a man would, deciding things for Benjamin, just like Joel decided things for her. Without even considering Benjamin. She chose for him. And She broke his heart.

    • @PIDURULZ

      @@TheHomerowKeys That toxic trait of making that decision for the man is indicative of modern feminism though. She fell victim to the feminist trap of being shackled by her own success. Instead of talking it out with him she choose for him and she was the only one who got what she wanted and in the end she found it wanting when it didn't work out just like most modern feminist. I do agree however with your point of her heading the relationship she was standing in her masculine which is what feminism ironically encourages

      @@PIDURULZ Feminism, in its root, is equality between the sexes, to come together as equals and not overpower one or the other.
      A disparity in that "power dynamic" is inherently un-Feminist because the ideal is to form an equal dynamic.
      For there to be a "feminist trap" doesn't make sense in what the definition of feminism is. Honestly, she's acting in the Male Power Struggle and just acting within male sexism.
      She is acting how men act within sexism.
      Basically, Benjamin is the honest Feminist here and she just acted against the whole movement by engaging in Chauvinism.

    Benjamin asked Midge to marry him entirely too fast! They hadn’t been dating that long and she was still legally married to Joel. She was a mother of two children and a comic. These two would not have been compatible in the long run. Benjamin didn’t like any one. His mom made that clear. I think he liked Midge because of the novelty and chaos that she brought to his uneventful perfectly manicured world. He was clearly more in to her then she was in to him.
