How to tame a Blues Deluxe

I made this 23 second video on a break at work just to show the device in case someone with a Blues Deluxe could use it.
The iPhone audio cuts out in the middle when I her hit the strings because the amp is so loud. With the tamer in, you can crank the preamp and still get distortion at a more manageable volume.
The Blues Deluxe has a linear volume pot that’s sensitive at lower volume, basically making it all or nothing with little in between. This device helps give you a more usable range.
It is my understanding that an attenuator is a device that comes between the amp and the speaker and reduces the power going to speaker. This is just a volume knob in the effects loop, and you could use a volume pedal to the same effect.
For years people told me my #fenderbluesdeluxe amp was too loud...finally...problem solved! I get the tones I want, and it doesn't knock pictures off the walls...unless I need it to!

Amazing demonstration. Future generations will be blessed by your single 1.5 second note.
These people are literally worthless. Did he watch it back and then be like yeah this will be useful to someone? 😂
Well said.
That's by design because it's a horrible device if you actually demonstrate it.
@@joesimon2018 hahaha
Best place to crank a tube amp is in a library
😂😂😂
Yeah 😅 can i see your library pass? (passes over the pick)
I’m just now realizing he actually is in a library 🤦🏼♂️
In the school of rock would be a ok .......school of another brick in the wall not so much😂
i’d love to hear you play a riff with it
That's not gonna happen because it probably doesn't do anything.
Effects loop is before the Power stage, so lowing the volume in that place kill ALL the gain in the Power tubes. Lol
As you can indeed hear.
…. And this amp already has a master volume, so isn’t it redundant? Or worse than a master volume?
@@FunkyKikuchiyo Yes absolutely stupid and redundant
@@FunkyKikuchiyo you would think so, but the damn thing is so loud. I have had waitresses and clubowners telling me to turn mine down when I play with a four piece band, and the volume never goes higher than 2. But yes, a proper attenuator should be after the power amp stage.
Is it like an attenuator?
You need an attenuator. He plugs it in and you get a clean tone not a cranked one.
I never understood these because you're not getting the power amp distortion and saturation that comes from legitimately cranking up an amp. I guess if you have an amp that has no master volume it could be useful but it's just not an attenuator and it's not going to get you "cranked tube amp sound." because you're not really cranking your amp up, you're just turning down the preamp signal. The output tubes aren't being cranked at all.
Attenuator kills a lot of the tone as well. Anything done to the signal to lower volume/gain is going to reduce the speaker movement, thus reducing the tonal qualities of it. If you want to get good tone, and be quiet, just plug headphones into the amp.
Stop making sense. These people need their janky $5 misunderstood bedroom mods to get that sweet mud-crunch with their high headroom 40w amps! 👌
@@Estoril_Blau the volume of people who think that tone comes from equipment is nuts. The single most important aspect to getting a nice amplified harp tone is having a thick and solid acoustic tone. Paired with proper mic cupping, there’s no amount equipment that can replicate the sound.
@@norfolknwhey4787Enough with this tone nonsense, give me a pedal or mod with the Toob-cRunCh and let this discussion be over.
not the sound of a cranked amp. When an amp is cranked the pre amp and output vales are at full chat now if you take your thingy and plug it in to the effect loop all its doing is making the signal smaller from the pre amp and sending it to the power amp part of your circuit where the power out put valves are. So what your left with is a can of bees. Just go get a good attenuator, spend the money and be happy.
bingo. fender amps get that glassy thing everyone loves from their power section
👍you are right! There are lots of 5 watt tube amps with attenuators out there that sound amazing!
@@kurtweiand7086😂They are not getting attenuation through the method of an attenuator, they are achieving that volume drop with resistance on the grid.
Excellent demo. You covered all the bases here.
What kinda demo is this?!
A terrible one
I do the same thing with a GHS little black amp pedal
You can also use an active volume pedal
Nice
I made one of those for my Fender M80 amp. It works great!!!!!!
I've got one for my Fender HRD. Works great! Highly recommended.
I bought one, shipped from the U.K., I love it, works with Peavey combo amps too, low volumes with plenty of overdriven tones, open it up and enjoy the tone
You can do the exact same thing with a volume pedal in the loop…
Nice!
For those who want to set it and forget it, and don’t have volume pedals lying around, this is def a better solution. I personally hate excess wires and weight to carry with me gig to gig. I imagine this thing costs less than a decent cable anyways.
@@JeremySteamsack25 bucks. A bit more than an audio taper pot/knob of choice, 1ft of 2319, and 2 TS jacks of choice but still good.
@@McOuroborosBurger $25 is a little more than I would’ve thought, imo it still beats the time to DIY and having a floppy 1ft loop of cable coming out your amp (would bug me a lot personally).
@@JeremySteamsack 1ft would be floppy yes but it's the minimum length of audio wire you can buy most places lol. Tbh you can likely make 2 out of a foot of cable and it's no harder to make one of these than changing pickups. Not to mention Working on any effects loop spacing. I have an extra pot so I may try this myself. Heat shrink tubing will also likely help the floppiness a lot.
Also yeah soldering ain't everyones cup of tea too which is more than understandable.
I have one. It is not a power soak. The amp only sounds good if the power tubes, 6L6’s are driven hot. You can get a distortion sound from an overloaded preamp section but to really rock the power section must be driven. In fact the preamp doesn”t contribute much. Tom Scholtz drove his power output tubes and cut the volume just before the speaker cabinet. A 5 watt all tube amp into a sealed 12 inch cabinet (not open back) will knock your socks off and it will be fricken loud.
a better trick is to use a boss graphic eq not only do you get the volume control but also frequencies as well.
Good hack
Seems like a useful device. Anything that adds an extra knob is always good. 😀

Lion Tamers are going to be flying off shelves now! That was great!
Nice! I used to do the same thing using a volume pedal in my effects loop.

Amazing he added a volume pot behind the volume pot wow. If you look at the schematic it literally has a master volume right before.
The problem lies in linear vs logarithmic pots…the Blues Deluxe has a fine line between super soft and full on loud. This solves it. Gives a much more usable range.
yep, and the build up of heat from the nonreactive load will destroy your amp way sooner than later. they also suck tone...bad!@@justinbishopmusic

Jhs attenuator pedal works for any amp 30 quid
Yes! Good call! It will fit any amp. 🙌
Or any effect that has a volume control will do the same. Not really "cranked tube amp sound" as it is pretty much like a master volume. Just a signal dump to ground before the phase inverter. You get no power tube saturation, just box-full-of-bees preamp distortion.
Noise gate?
It’s like ordering a burger with extra cheese just to scratch all the cheese from it before eating.
You’re killing the signal that reaches the power amp and therefore the amount of the tube generated distortion that we all love🤷🏻♂️
More reasonable volume? How bout lower the Master Volume to get the 'reasonable volume' dat u desire?
I got Hughes & Kettner Metal Master tube pre-amp .. the master volume is at the rear
Linear vs Logarithmic volume pots on the Blues Deluxe make it hard to get a good usable range…It’s either too quiet or too loud. This knob (or a volume pedal in the effects loop) gives you a more usable range while still having tube breakup.
@@justinbishopmusic Ah ... I see. I only got 1 solid state 30w combo amp(Envoy 110) as my only practice amp.
I've only kept a H&K Metal Master and a JCM800 50w head(no cabinets). The H&K and Marshall have been modded by the guys from CERIATONE custom boutique amp in late 90s before they became well known and expensive😅 ... never realised I've kept my Peavey, H&K and Marshall since I bought them used in 92 until just now.
I prefer the volume pedal in the fx loop method.
Yes, that works too, and you can control it live during a song!
no, you get a cranked pre-amp sound.. the signal going to the power tubes is still lower.. therefore the sweet power amp breakup you want isn't there.. and wont be without driving the poweramp.. then if you want it quieter.. you have to use an attenuator. you can take any pedal and chop the gain at the loop.. same thing.. yes it quieter.. no it's not allowing the amp to breathe.. snake oil for those who don't understand how their tube (or any) amp works..
Finally someone has made the most useful tool for guitarist , no more have to buy a 1000$ ox amp box
Lol, they do different things.
Those things were "invented" long before the OxBox and is just a marketing thing because technically it does nothing else than any volume pedal if you put it in the FX Loop.
Yep. Does nothing for the power amp, which is wear the best tones of a tube amp live.
I have on for my Hotrod DeVille.
That's basically a master volume knob.
… which that amp already has. Dumb.
It sits after the preamp tubes but before the power tubes so not exactly...but still crap
@@joesimon2018 isn’t that how the original master volume amps were? Back in the ‘70s?
@@FunkyKikuchiyo depends on which amp but a lot work during phase inversion and not before. At any rate all it is is a volume pot in a box. The Blues Deluxe has pretty crappy overdrive as it is
Just use a volume pedal
That would reduce the volume of your guitar signal not your power amp.
@@TarshishedCactusThey meant a volume pedal in the effects loop. It's literally the same thing in a different and more useful form factor.
Will that work on a big tube amp? Let’s say like a Marshall 1987x or a JTM45? Would be a game changer for those amps.
Depends on the spacing of the effects loop. Another hack is to just put a volume pedal in the effects loop. It accomplishes the same thing.
I use global volume on a Mooer GE200 in the loop of my 5150 but ive used Boss eq level cut too.
budget volume attenuator .....ever!
It will eat up the tubes faster than normal but better cranked tube tone. So it's a even exchange.
You can hear how that reduced the power amp response in this small demo, which means it isn't the sound of a cranked tube amp. The attenuation needs to happen after the power amp.
Yeah I ultimately sold this whole rig. Have you used an actual attenuator that you would recommend? I love the sounds people get with the Ox Box on CZcams, but that may just be a whole expensive studio that I’m hearing and not just one piece of gear.
Potentiometer and capacitor
An attenuator, then?
Attenuators affect the actual power load. This just gives you another volume knob…So you can open up your master volume a little more, and have the preamp gain dimmed without it being so loud. You could do the same with a volume pedal in the effects loop.
Wow man
Its an attenuator. Need to hear it because some are better than others at transferring the initial sound. Otherwise, just throw a pillow over the amp.
Cool, does it short-circui? the power chain.
People saying how amazing the power valves sound so good and how this is just preamp tubes blabla.. it's impossible to crank a tube amp at home, which is where 99% of people use them. So these volume tapers actually help, since the master on these amps sucks.
That's neato, dude. Here, check this out…
It will tame your effects but your not running anything but your volume pot. This will do nothing to the amp volume or preamp volume
Is there any point getting one for a solid state?
It depends on how it is set up, but I wouldn’t think so. What kind do you have?
No
Nope
Nope only for tube amps it's a power sponge basically like the peavy Windsors all of those tube amps front the small 25watt combo all the way to the big 100 watt head have one built in, it's so you can drive the master and preamp volumes on a tube amp and get that true tube amp breaking up distortion or crunchy sound with out blowing the windows out of the house and you can play very quietly with out losing any tone. Iike this I use this same one in the video on my tube amps that don't have a power sponge like my 100 watt special edition marshall vintage modern with full matching cabs I have two full size cans and this thing quiets it down nicely to where I can enjoy the pure raw sounds out of my vintage modern with out blowing out the windows of every house on the block at midnight on a Friday night while up drinking and jamming with my buddies at my house or even just to practice and get my pedel boards and everything setup correctly for my vintage modern for a show so that way I get to hear the actual tone with out blowing my ear drums out getting my guitar rig setup few days before a show and I even use it live to be able to get that raw cranked up marshall tone out of my vintage modern with out clipping the mic and pa system and over powering the whole band it actually has made my guitar setup sound alot better live cuse I don't have to use my ,100 watt boss katana MK2 at Venus that are smaller or indoors that would kill ppls ear drums or max out the decibel meter if I used my vintage modern so now I can use my marshall stack etc every gig now thanks to this little device. But they had to make one to be able to work in my marshall vintage modern and they will make one for any make or model tube amp at same price as one that doesn't have to be specially made they work amazing and great guys to work with and I got lucky that the one I got made for my marshall vintage modern I got it to work with any other tube amp I got by getting female to male guitar amp cables two of them so that way you can use it on any amp that has efx loop jack sockets to far apart for it to fit and you can have it easily accessible like that on stage if you need to turn up a little bit during a gig or live show
I have a Gibson Maestro tube Amp. It is a practice Amp they used at cotton music in Nashville and they gave it to me when I bought my electric guitar in about 1979 or 81. Can't remember exactly. At that time they were located in Hillsboro village. It has cigarette burns on top from laying them on there. Still sounds great.
How is this different from turning down your master volume ?
It’s subtle, but for some reason I like the character better…You get some tone shaping by the master volume being up higher. 🤷♂️
I have a fender deluxe, and the master volume only applies to the “drive” channel. The “normal” channel doesn’t have a master volume control, so if you wanted to crank the preamp gain, you’d need to put a volume control in the effects loop, or use an attenuator.
It doesn’t appear as though anyone actually answered your question, so…
The difference between using an attenuator like this and just turning down the master volume is that the attenuator enables the preamp to be overdriven at lower output volumes, whereas just turning down the master volume (which in this case is the only volume control for the non-drive channel) will reduce the amount of drive/gain along with the reduction in volume. That’s the intended result of attenuators in general, at least- I’m unfamiliar with this particular amp, so it’s possible that other comments have led me astray re: my explanation of this particular scenario’s use case, but in general, preserving the sound of overdriven preamp tubes at lower volumes is the point of using an attenuator like this ..,
I have an atentuator as well. But now i have the helix, so 😂 Everthing is built in including the atenuator.
Same! I got rid of this rig. Bought a Helix. Very happy. 😃
It looks like it’s a lot cheaper than a Power Brake- but does it sound okay?
As long as you like the sound of your preamp gain, then it just gives you that sound at a lower volume. Very little effect on tone. Just reduces volume.
@@justinbishopmusic Nice

For years I have been plugging in a 110v cord direct and it rocks for about 3.1 seconds and then the amp is toast. I am thinking the voltage is a little high. Maybe cut it to 32v...🎉🎉🎉
😜⚡️
I'm hard pressed to call that a cranked tube amp sound.
Why would u want a *more reasonable volume".....................?
Cranked pre amp gain*
No you are not getting a cranked tube amp sound at a low volume. As you can obviously hear its killing the power tube saturation....might as well just turn the volume on the amp down
Volume pedal does the same thing, but you can control the volume while playing.
Yes! A better option if you already own one.
So it's an attenuator?
No, attenuators reduce power. This is just another volume knob but allows you to get a different character of drive at more reasonable volumes. A volume pedal would work too.
Theres finally gadgets for this? Opposite of this, i always run a single cable through the effects loop with nothing on it, its almost like running a tube screamer on the front end
😮
That's gonna blow up a lot of amps. People will put it in amps that don't work that way.

The best place for cranked tube amps! 😂
Wait until you hear about the volume pedals.
REVOLUTIONARY
Like an attenuator?
Or you could just turn your master volume.
I mean, that’s why God invented the master volume pot… would be useful on an amp without an MV like a reverb though. To give credit, maybe this blues deluxe doesn’t have a master. Mine does
How does it work and why are some people pay 1000$ for big attenuators then?
This is just a volume knob. So you only really get your preamp cranked. With a $$$ attenuator, it soaks the power, so you can crank everything but still control volume.
Can you use this on a hot rod deluxe?
Check what out?
So basically an attenuator?
Does this just give you more headroom?
The volume pot on the Blues Deluxe is super sensitive. This gives you more of usable volume range.
But HOW DO I GET THE TONE WITHOUT IT BEING EARSPLITTINGLY LOUD?!?I have this or similar amp (Blues Deluxe reissue) and also use a passive attenuator in the loop, but it clearly hurts the tone of the amp even if it allows you to get saturation at lower volumes. Is the solution a $300+ additional box, a "power soak" you guys tall about, or a different tube amp that has lower overall output, or something else?
I finally just got a Helix! Apparently the torpedo captor x or even the Bugera attenuator will seem more natural than this passive little guy. But seriously. Try a solid modeler. Sounds better cranked at lower volume to my ears.
You must be a drummer. By, “a more reasonable volume,” I thought you meant louder.

Just turn down your amp or guitars’ volume, same thing.🔊

The Blues Deluxe has a very fine line between “can’t hear it” and “way too loud.” This solves that problem and gives you a much more usable range in between. If Fender would just put a decent volume pot on the Blues Deluxe, it wouldn't be necessary. For real. Mine goes from wimpy to broken windows if you bump it a hair's breadth between like 2-3. :(
So it’s an attenuator?
It provides the same function but doesn’t actually mess with the power. Just the volume in the effects loop.
It looks like it’s adding a master volume to an amp that doesn’t have one. It sits between the preamp and the power amp, whereas an attenuator sits between the power amp and the speaker. This will make the amp volume more manageable but at the expense of the sound you get from saturating the power tubes.
