  • In this video Gary and Marcus are at Derby college trying to unpack the different electrical qualifications of City and Guilds, EAL and T Levels. To say it's mildly confusing would be an under statement with 2365, 5357, 7202, 8202, 8202-30, level 1 diploma, level 2 diploma, level 3 diploma, AM2, AM2S and now T levels to name but a few. However with special guest Ash, Ollie and Jonny the lads hope to give some clarity to the qualification structure when studding to be an electrician in England.

I did a level 2&3 and the a nvq level 3 with eal. The reason the college went with it was because they allowed three of the seven cables used, containment etc to be simulated in college.
So if you didn’t use it at work it made it easier for people. Whereas C&G wouldn’t allow that.

Great video as always. With the current shortage of Electricians and trades people in general. Why are they always trying to make it
more difficult for people to enter the industry? Seems to me this may scare some school leavers rather than encourageing them.
I went down the EAL route which took me to gain my level 3 qualifications. I am now currently taking my QSQ course for Qualified
supervisor, just to be able to join a CPS. I'm currently 65Yo and changed my career to Domestic installer in 2021 after being made
    redundant.

The electrical industry qualifications are so confusing and so many different courses. They need to change the layout and just have a couple routes.
I’m old school and did the 2330-2, 2330-3, NVQ 2251-2, NVQ 2251-3, then the 2395, 2396. Plus lots of regs and updates. Now having to do 2346 for the NIC QS!

So we have a shortage of trained tradesmen, especially electricians but the qualifications are not encouraging those who want a trade. They are designing a new route to university. If someone follows the T-level route and arrives at university to read Electrical Engineering, the reality of the level of mathematics that is required will be a huge shock. Calculus and differential equations are some of the easier elements. The ability to rearrange algebraic equations is a must. If you don't like mathematics which is the language of engineering, don't apply.
Just a little point of interest, I used to teach at Dudley College.

Having previously employed apprentices I am not interested in a great string of academic GCSE's. I want applicants to have a reasonable understanding of Maths, English and Science. Be able to talk with customers, plan and impilement projects and be able to use the tools of the trade, With this over reliance on GCSE's to access if a candidate is suitable apprentice electrician is a mistake I think we could end up with alot of apprenices who are like Light houses in a dessert, bright but no use! I would like to see an apptitude based assessment tes.

Hi. I came upon your channel while researching electrical installation courses. I am looking at enrolling for a Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installation C&G 2365 LV2 at Coventry College. I am looking at the part time course - 1 day a week - as I currently work part time. I am coming up to collecting my government cheque and am looking at ultimately doing those little domestic jobs that it is hard to find someone to do - I have had that experience myself. I am not looking at being full time employed - I watched your qualifications video and got a bit lost with the domestic installation area of being an electrician. Would I need a level 3 to do domestic installtions? What wouild be the best route to becoming just a domestic installer. Hope you clear this up for me. Cheers -

  • @robertdybell6604

May not be on point, but what ever happened to the old C&G 2360, and the numerous electricians forced out of the trade due to NVQ level 3 requirements by trade associations and regulatory bodies, I get the NVQ route as it implies you can physically do the job but some 34 years experience cannot be replaced, I started my training in 1989 and had to carry out plumbing plastering as part of my apprenticeship also.
Ps carrying out the role of NICEIC QS for over 20 years now.

I'm currently undertaking my EAL Level 2 & 3. Fortunately I work in the Electrical industry but some of my college colleagues (who don't work in the industry but want to) have stated to me that when ringing around for work they have been faced with the response of "Sorry we don't recognise any EAL qualifications within the industry, you will have to call us back when you have been awarded C&G certificates!" Can anyone shed any light on this as to what is right or wrong? Are certain firms talking nonsense when it comes to this issue or not? As there are a few people including myself who are now questioning everything, as "we" (us at college) don't what to be wasting time, effort and money on courses that will be worthless down the line. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just for clarification, if you currently do a level 2 there is a pathway onto the level 3 apprenticeship with some time taken off in lieu exams taken (more options/opportunities), does the T levels offer the same, or are you tied into a two year course with no qualification after the first year, and even on completion no guarantee of becoming a domestic electrician or working with an employer to complete your portfolio , the only guaranteed path is more debt and a university course.

You need XYZ to be an electrician, if you don’t have this you cant be called an electrician.
Scrap all this nonsense about being a domestic installer. Everyone dose the same level of training to become an electrician.
The company I do work for, won’t employ anyone now that dose not have a JIB gold card, unless you’re an apprentice. We had so many people turning up with part qualifications , patchy experience all they did was cause problems and then would leave, since the change, no problems at all.
