The Martyrdom of the Bab
On July 9, Baha'is commemorate the date on which the Bab the Herald of Baha'u'llah was executed in 1850 by a 750 firing squad in front of 20,000 witnesses in Tabriz, Persia.. A strong force of wind, earthquake, cholera and famine immediately followed. One third of the firing squad later died in an earthquake, the remainder are executed for mutiny. The bodies of the Bab and Anis (His companion) are retrieved as directed by Baha'u'llah and ultimately interred at the Shrine of the Bab on the slope of Mt. Carmel, Israel.
