  • The Philippine government has begun an ambitious project to restore what has been described as a dead river.
The Pasig waterway in Manila has been ranked as the world's most-polluting river as it empties thousands of tonnes of plastic into the ocean each year.
A task force has been formed to rehabilitate the river.
Al Jazeera’s Barnaby Lo reports from Manila, the Philippines.

The study which stated that Pasig River is the most polluting river in the entire world can easily be falsified. I know Pasig river is not the cleanest but I can personally attest it is not the dirtiest nor the smelliest nor the worst polluter. Go around the globe and see for yourselves. Look at other larger rivers in China, India, South America and even in Indonesia. This study should have been contested for its claims. Nevertheless, I fully support any effort to maintain an ecological balance with people and nature.

education is the most important element. this must be consciously and with full spirit brought into the culture, to not throw trash around. people need to be aware that they're stewards of the planet for the next generation. we shouldn't just live how we want now without any regard to future generations. as far as education, i think it needs to start as early as possible, and entire classes need to actively clean up around their schools and neighborhoods, which will instill in them a sense of responsibility.

Look at what they did to Mandaluyong. They put skyway on the river and it made the Ilog Pasig looks ugly. I hope they won't do that in other local government units

The rehabilitation project actually started back in the 90's when the river was pronounced biologically dead. It looks much cleaner now than few decades ago when it was dark, murky and smells foul.

Pasig river cleanup has been ongoing for a decade or two already so bit by bit the govt is is reviving the river to its former glory. Its not the most polluted river in the world, you can look at the main rivers in India they are even more polluted than the Pasig river.

The first step to clean up the Pasig River is to relocate the illegal settlers who are staying on the river side. If the government cleans the river before relocating the settlers, the effort will be wasted because the illegal settlers, as always, are throwing their wastes in the river.

WORLD's MOST POLLUTING RIVER? ive seen enough rivers that is worse than that. Atleast that river isnt biologically dead and theres a lot of different animals in there, unlike that "sacred" river I saw somewhere where the smell is stinky and dead bodies are being thrown there.
