How do you avoid the Vaseline clogging the tube?

There is a special cream for tattooing that does not clog the tube. I don't know what it's called but if you Google vaseline replacement tattooing you'll probably find something. I think it has 'green' in the name. Good luck!

Any tips for improving line thickness as well as when you get a space in between the needle?

Try a thicker needle. 5 and 7 RL produce crisp thin lines, but for old school or punchy designs, try a 13RL.
There absolutely shouldn't be spaces, make sure you are using a reliable brand and ensure your machine is running the correct voltage. Unfortunately it's hard to be specific without knowing the type of machine you are using. An old coil machine I have runs at 7 for lining, whereas my Mast Lancer is 8-8.5 for lining.
