  • The 1982 FIFA World Cup Final was a football match contested between Italy and West Germany. It was the final match of the 1982 FIFA World Cup tournament and was played on 11 July 1982 at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in the Spanish capital and largest city of Madrid.
Coming after their 1934 and 1938 victories, Italy had now drawn level with record champions Brazil. Italy's Paolo Rossi won the Golden Boot as the tournament's top goalscorer, and the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player (awarded for the first time). Italy's 40-year-old goalkeeper and captain Dino Zoff became the oldest player to win the World Cup.

I was 12 years old. Before this game, all the posters at Brothers Pizza in East Brunswick, New Jersey were of various Yankee players, and of Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack, and of movies with Italian actors in it, like “The Godfather” and “Raging Bull.” After this, every poster seemed to show the team as a whole, or Paolo Rossi in particular.

In this World Cup, Brazil and Argentina were only the South American teams who advanced to second group stage. Except them all other teams who advanced to second stage were Europeans. Coincidentally both Brazil and Argentina both were placed in the same group in the second group stage along with Italy. Italy who had three unimpressive draws in the first group stage were now unluckily placed in the group of death with the two strongest South Americans teams where one was the defending champion and other was the highly favorites with record of most World Cup titles. The fact is that Italy was the lone European team in the second group stage who was put with Argentina and Brazil. While all others teams in the second group stage were European team against a fellow European team. Italy was in dire need of wins to gain points so that their World Cup campaigns doesn't end disastrous. The motivated Italy first managed to win against Argentina and then a memorable hattrick by Paolo Rossi made them win against Brazil in one of the best and highly thrilling match and advance to semi final. They kept their spirit and convincingly won against Poland in the semi final and West Germany in the final. In short Italy's 1982 World Cup win was a great and miraculous triumph. They defeated all the previous three consecutive World Cup winners in their enroute to victory.

There was no game at all against Germany, one of the most unfair teams in World Cup history (No-Attack deal taken with Austrian cousins in groups and murder foul by German Keeper Schumacher against Frances Player Battiston not sanctioned...another fact: Germany is the only country to have won 2 World Cups for Simulations Diving-Penalty 1974 & 1990)

As it turned out there was very little to beat in Spain. All the major countries suffered with injuries or other problems and Brazil proved to have, not a team, but only a brilliant midfield.

I honestly think you’re talking absolute shit here. Everyone still talks about this Brazil team as the greatest to not win a World Cup. Argentina had maradona and Kempes. Boniek was at his best for Poland. Rummenige was the drive for Germany and Platini was coming into his own where they won the euros just 2 years later.

Total BS. See comments below. One of the greatest WC. It was Italy 's year, that is, and I am French, so remembering Séville (SF with Germany) as the top of WC drama ever.

@@alexbacchetta1368 Spain, the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and West Germany were extremely disappointing, only half the teams they had been in 1981 when they had all looked very good. Argentina were not even half the side they had been four years earlier, with Mario Kempes a shadow of his former self and Maradona a total flop.
Brazil turned out to have not so much a team as a brilliant midfield. All the skill and class in this tournament came in matches involving them and France. As for Italy, in the first round and against Argentina they were their old selves, dirty, cynical, time wasting and although against Brazil and in the final they produced some counter attacking moves of quality that few other teams could, you’ll never convince me they were the best footballing team of 1982.
