- Since I am still recovering from surgery and unable to crawl around a car, and I have been asked a zillion times lately, "How do I fix exhaust leaks on my Model A?", this is a mashup of two previously published videos made into one to specifically discuss how to fix exhaust leaks. Huge thanks to Carmen Gianforte for your support!! If you don't want your Model A to break down, just subscribe! czcams.com/users/paulshinn...

Watching this video so that I can work on my exhaust leak like a pro. thanks Paul!
Happy Birthday Mrs Shinn! And happy anniversary Roadie, you've been adopted by two good people. A special acknowledgment on "debugging" the engine (Sorry, tech guy, couldn't pass up the chance). Thank you as always, have a great week ~ Chuck
Thank you so much Chuck! How did that bug make it's way past the firewall? Two can play that game!!
@@ModelA It just hit me....Sorry I was so slow on the uptake. Man, that was a good one!😂
@@charlesdalton985 Hahahaa! Tech joke
Thanks Paul and your wife Tina 👍👍

It’s good to see you encourage Model T to participate and turn the wrenches oh and happy birthday! 🎈🎂
She WANTS to turn wrenches. Crazy, huh? Hahaa!
Happy Birthday Model T!
Happy Birthday Tina.🎉🎉🎉🎉
I love that the work can be done at home! How wonderful that your wife shares your passion for these cars! Thanks for another great video.
Thanks for watching!
Model A Guy words of the day, “nothing to see here just two cool people doing cool people things.” Nothing could be more from the truth while cruz’n in a Model A with a happy birthday girl. Saw the comments about Model T birthday.
Happy Birthday Kiddo!! Seize the day!!!
Your other video on the exhaust leak repair helped me FINALLY cure the #4 leak on my '31. You are spot on with the gasket recommendation. Thanks again!
Happy Birthday T
Paul great opening scene with the sun reflecting off model-T's car.
Thanks!
my dad is 86, i introduced him to your channel and he says "this fella knows his stuff".
adept ape's channel did a very comprehensive video regarding extensions and their effect on torque values, if anyone is interested.
great channel.
That is awesome! Thanks! I'm an engineer, so I usually lay awake doing mental calculations for fun. I calculated effects of extensions on torque values. Decided the variation was negligible.
A suggestion for torquing nuts and bolts. Run the motor through two or three heat cycles and retorque the fasteners. Extra work to be sure, but it pays to be diligent with older designs. They thrive on TLC! And lots of TLC for model T! Your dedicated helper!
Enjoy your weekend!😊
Thank you! And, thank you for the very kind letter and bux!! Tina used the funds to buy some decent shocks for Roadie. Video soon.
Yes! Let me go drive our 1929 Tudor and check for exhaust leaks. Thanks Paul!
Just slide a pan under it to catch the exhaust leaks
I hope you're both living the dream ,especially Mrs S ,HAPPY BIRTHDAY Tina. Enjoy, be safe and have fun . Thank you both.
Wow, T! Paul gave you an exhaust repair for your birthday…! ❤️
Happy Birthday Tina! 🎂
Congratulations on finishing another trip around the sun Tina. I hope you continue to enjoy a healthy and
Happy year.
Happy Birthday Model T!!! 🎈🎉 Great video you two as always.

That's the plan!
Great video and Happy Birthday Model T🎉
Happy Birthday T !
Happy Birthday Tina!!
happy birth day Tina from the Campbell's in Pelham Ontario Canada
Thanks Paul! This video was a huge help to me. No more exhaust leaks on my Model A!
happy B day Model T
Hey there Paul. Hope all is well this find weekend. Please tell Model T a HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Hope she had a great Bithday and you guys were able to do something special. 1 year anniversary of her car as well. WOW...where did that time go?? That went so quick. Still look pretty good though. I am sure you are getting some good rides out of it. Have a wonderful weekend my friend and have a blessed Sunday. God bless!
Thank you Pastor CRAIG!!! I pray that you and Zack and the family are well. I'm recovering from surgery, doing better!
Teamwork ❤
Great video, sir!; didn’t know you had undergone surgery. Wish you a speedy recovery and a happy one year anniversary to Roadie and Model T.
Thank you! Yea, some kidney issues again. Pretty serious this time.
Great job and get well soon Paul. Happy Birthday, Tina 🥳
On newer cars, we used a smoke machine for checking intake, exhaust, fuel evaporation system, and other sealed system leaks but probably not necessary on something as simple as a Model A. In my old days, we would pour transmission fluid down the carburetor when running and it would make so much smoke you could see all the leaks but very nasty smoke. You would hope it was a windy day just to get it away from you.
Happy Birthday Model T, speedy recovery Paul. Good video. I especially liked the rattle can engine rebuild. LOL 😆.
Glad you enjoyed it Dan Man!!
Yes, Happy Birthday Model T, I hope you had fun, looks like you did. Great instructions on the exhaust leak fix, some real sound advice for sure. I haven't had many exhaust leaks on my modern cars or trucks, some on my tractors, which are a little different as you know. Usually those leaks are at the manifold to pipe connections. Thanks for sharing, I hope you and Model T have a wonder, blessed weekend.
Thanks, will do!
That was exhausting! Tina you need to paint your oil filter! Paul: vice grip garage would gig ya on the fram oil filter! He would say WIX! Great video guys!
It has a Motorcraft filter on it now
You can still get a Model A oil filter from Ford? Wow!@@ModelA
Thank you and as always great and practical advice. I really appreciate your use of original parts when that is the best idea yet you are willing to use some modern things when appropriate.
I appreciate that!
To those who question the use of an extension with a torque wrench I ask when was the last time they checked the calibration of their torque wrench? Happy birthday Tina🎉🎉🎉🎉
Great point! ***Geoff does mic drop and walks off stage...
Happy birthday my friend
Tina says Thank You!
I was talking to Joe at Aries Muffler and he says to leave the inserts out as well. However, lightly wet the surface of both the muffler and the exhaust manifold before applying the high temp Permatex. Possibly helps with the bonding? Anyway, I have an Aries muffler sitting on my garage floor and looking forward to seeing the difference compared to my old muffler.
Happy Birthday Tina CARMEN GIANFORTE (see spelling again)
Ugh... Please see the description. I swear, I checked the spelling TWICE!! I'm going to use a different text scroll editor. I hate this one since the mandatory "update" added spell checker. I am so sorry, Carmen. Please know, I mean NO disrespect to you, my friend.
Orange oil filter….🤪
Happy birthday 🎊 🎉
Howdy Paul,
I really enjoy your channel and hope to be driving a Model A in the near future. Helping a friend with his 1930 4 door. Is Snyders your goto place for a wiring harness with signal lights.
I get them from Bratton's
Esa ayudante tuya es muy atractiva y trabajadora.
Aerospace absolutely allows the mechanic to use a straight extension without the need to adjust torque values. If it's good for them, definitely fine here!
A quick question Paul, do you need to re-torque after the manifold gasket gets hot and then cool again. ...and of course Happy Birthday Tina....
When you initial torque to 40 ft/lbs, usually not.
I had to re-do my exhaust gaskets not once, not two-fold, but many-fold!
Hiachgh xD
Paul, are the gland rings critical for B engines too? As I recall, when I put together my B engine the gland rings didn’t allow for a solid fit.
I use them on my B motor also.
Hi Friends! A comprehensive video on how to fix exhaust leaks on the Model A! HAPPY Birthday Tina! Paul, can holes in the pipe between the exhaust maninfold and the front of the muffler, cause the popping also, or is that already too far down the system to cause that kind of behavior?
That would cause popping for sure!
@@ModelAthat would explain the popping sounds when I climb out of my recliner. My exhaust leaks too! 😂
A question for you... has there been an A that was changes to Fuel Injection, Maybe A/C added? Just wondering...Thank you for your cool videos :-)
I have seen a LOT of air conditioning added to Model As. Especially the people in Texas. I saw a fuel injection system someone was playing with in a Model A once, but it was horrible. Carburetors are WAY more reliable.
Question? I notice the firewall on this car is black. My 1929 Model A was restored with the firewall painted the same color has the car (matching paint) . I have a couple of issues with some surface rust coming through the paint. I was going to treat it with the rust paint then cover it with the original. Is it that big of a deal if I leave it black instead?
Roadie used to be black. Whoever painted that color it is now did not paint the firewall. Normally, the firewall would be the same color as the body.
It’s not a big deal if it’s not a big deal to you. Some people love to criticize and point out every aspect that differs from the factory spec, and claim it’s “wrong”. I try to smile and say I’m impressed with how much they know.
P.S. Even the Fine Point Jusging winners don’t have 1930’s air in the tires, nor 1930’s oil and gasoline. I guess they’re wrong, too.
Yea, I know... We do plan to blow Roadie apart and paint it someday. but until then, Tina enjoys the car just the way it is. What color will it be??? No idea.
@@ModelAwhatever is Tina's favorite color, of course!
copper gaskets?
Yep
I always wondered why on the model A manifold there is always one unpainted rusty section and other section is painted. Anyone know the answer?
Heat
Is that a Tillitson on Roadie?
I think you’re right!
Yes. Good eye! That Tilly was removed many months ago and a proper Zenith is on there now. Did a video about it.
4:35 you would wouldn’t you 😊
When I see your brown fenders I am less ashamed of my grey ones.
Hahahaaa!!! The shame is real.
Sure, Model As came out of the factory with black fenders. But as the paint wore out or the owners desired something different plenty were repainted a variety of colors. Its impossible to know from photos because they were all black and white! You can tell people it’s a faithful replica of how the car appeared in 1936 when it was driven to The Indianapolis 500 race. Let them prove you’re wrong.
Right??!!
@@ModelA Sure
Stoner the puppet!!
Hahahahaa!! That's the name we are gonna call it now. See what you started??!!!
@@ModelA love it!!
