The COLDEST Place in Thailand (Russian Friends' Adventure to "Phu Chi Fah")

- Even during my 5 years living in Michigan (Northern USA), I've never experienced temperature swings like this - the freezing winds of the legendary 'Phu Chi Fah' mountainside are impressive to say the least - even our new friends from Russia are surprised that "Thailand can get so cold!"
Welcome to Chiang Rai Province, home of the "Sky Pointing Mountain," and one of the coldest (beautiful and breath-taking) places I've been in a long, long time.**
This is the first day of our Chiang Rai trip, and I am so excited to share this entire week of adventure with you! We have some new friends for this trip, as well as our very special friends Bank and Rimma, and we are all feeling blessed and so fortunate to be able to spend the final week of 2021 together in such a place.
LOCATION:
We stayed at Buran Resort, which is about 1km from the summit of Phu Chi Fah

(The room is very basic, the amenities simple, but the view is absolutely incredible!)
**I didn't actually say in the video, but I know there must be many people who are curious :) The temperature at noon in Chiang Mai, finishing a morning bike ride, was up to 33 C. By the time we reached the restaurant in Chiang Rai (the one in today's video), it had dropped to around 14 C, and by sundown, it was just 8 C and extremely windy. Might even seem downright warm compared to Michigan, but when you only have clothing for low-land Thailand, shorts and a T-shirt will leave you freezing in no time :) Like I said, even our new friends from Russia were surprised!
I'm probably old enough to be your mother, but you have taught me so much! Your faith, kindness, and positive attitude are inspirational. I came to your channel to learn more about Thai cuisine. I hope I have the chance to travel from the US to Thailand one day soon.

What an absolute stunning place, it seems like the top of the world, I could sit at that restaurant and look at that view for ever. You Joel are one of the nicest young men I've ever had the privilege of watching on CZcams, actually change that You Are The Nicest Young Man on CZcams and your wife Lee is beautiful, funny, sweet, you make the perfect couple. I would love to travel to Thailand but I'm disabled now and walking is a problem on the flat never mind up and down hillside, life is funny I'm now of an age where I have the time and enough money to travel and visit out of the way places, but now my body isn't up to it. We tend to put off majority of the things we dream of doing … affordability/timing /companionship … then get to a point where we have all the “missing pieces” only to find something else is out of whack - like the body can no longer keep up. Man, so much credit for people having to work in situations like this. They ACED it with their choice of location but at the same time, they have to then put up with just completely unnecessary amounts of strong wind in their daily life for ALL the other hours of the day that they are not busy serving customers this glorious “Curry over rice with a side of $1 million views.”

Isn't Li allergic to the cold? She is funny. I love the way you order dishes with what you want in them and then you can add whatever you like from the table to create it the way you like it. We could not quite understand what the condiment was that you added to the eggs. The food looks delicious. Your friends seem like such fun people. Oh that poor girl with mouth on fire. She needs a beer to put the fire out in her mouth. Such fun watching your videos.
Very very good memory! Yes Sharon you are correct, she had terrible itching for the whole trip. Which just shows me her strength and her diligence in setting aside personal difficulty… The rest of us did not even know until the trip was almost over.
Oh my I’m sorry about the microphone, that condiment was kind of the funny thing of the meal as well, so many trips back when I was a teacher, so many kids survived simply off of white rice with an egg on top just dousing it with this thing that they called chili sauce, but even in Thailand this so-called chili sauce is just like an orange sticky ultra sweet ketchup. Ha ha
The place looks beautiful, great view but all I would drink is soup way to cold. Li need to eat some ginger to warm up and help her nose...some hugs to Joel. I am seeing the sun but where is the sunlight.

I visited there on the 4th of December. We watched the sunsets on Pha Tang and sunrise on Phu Chee Fah. But I would say Phu Chee Dao is a hidden beauty and very few people knew about that. And on the 4th it was soooooo cold...

Joel, I believe so!!! We started hiking from 4.30 am and reached at the top around 5.40 am. And after that we literally waited 1 hour with blanket to see the sunrise. Great experience!!!

Hi Joel , Li, Bank and Rimma 👋 🙏🤗. Lovely video as always! The way that restaurant slants on that cliff is terrifying. I'm very scared of heights. Have an absolute phobia. The food looks lovely but I'm sure it was cold within minutes with that wind! I had a fun day as well yesterday. Went for breakfast with my children. First time eating out in ages. Caitlin and I decided to forgo the full English and shared natchos and baked Camembert with cherry compote instead. We were full from breakfast so made a tossed macaroni with bacon, onion and my homemade garlic and bell pepper relish with chillies. Simple but good. My children are so excited. I allowed Caitlin to take her brother for a short holiday to see the Sudwala caves. She's a big girl now and her boyfriend drives well. They're going to sleep at a bed and breakfast for 2 days. 300 Kms from home so I am nervous! Have to cut the apron strings at some point but it's not easy 😂. Have a blessed day and sorry for missing the livestream. I overslept and I never do that. Only woke up at 6 am.

Amazing stuff Joel, would you consider cycling up there? It looks like a climb I've done in Majorca a few times called Sa Colobra. 20km switchbacks at average 15 degrees. Is that one steeper? Enjoy your beautiful life, wife and food my friend. Blessings.

Paul hey man :-) happy new year :-) yes I know that Climb very well, the one you have seen in this video is more than twice as steep as the famous Sa Colobra climb… which is kind of mind boggling to think about. But going back in my Strava (I have to know!! 😂), I’ve done 2 that were steeper (here in Thailand) already. It’s hard to judge when you are in a car I guess

Joel, I like your Thai vids. I lived in a small village (behind the Wat in the guest room) in Sakhon Nakon for a school year and only had access to the same food you often review. Good job. Especially with ordering in Thai which can be a bit complicated what with 25 different “salads.” My only criticism is, well if you are making these for westerners, you should imo talk as if you’re back home. You’re doing what we all do after a couple of years...changing the way you talk cause you’re used to speaking to Thai people (I’m speaking of annunciation, etc).
I agree. I think it’s annoying from a westerner’s pov listening in. I’m more American than Thai. But if it’s a Thai person watching it may not be.
Yeah some people don’t even realize they’re doing it until they go home and people are like wtf, dude?
Perhaps my favorite region of Thailand. The sunsets were incredible; along with the landscapes. To top it all off are the different cultural elements there; Hilltribe peoples, Chinese diaspora(Who fought their way out of China following the Communist takeover, and Laos elements. Some very good Chinese food in that area, but also hearty foods as you ate in the video. i,e Rice porridges, soups, and even strawberries are quite nice up there. Thankyou for doing a full video on Phu Chi Fah.

But man, I really had no idea, I had only been here for one day just with a backpack 12 years ago, I do remember it was extremely peaceful yes, but I don’t remember any details. Poor Li, I feel her pain … there’s hardly anything worse than being hungry except for being cold AND hungry 😰🤤 That car blanket wasn’t keeping her warm enough - looks like she could’ve used a nice thick coat🧥 I agree with Bank’s point that thin slices of meat will cook in lime/citrus juice … a form of escabeche/escovitch cooking 🐟🐟🍤🍤🥘

I think I cut like half of the audio, deleted it immediately, and then just went to work with the other half. But no, no overdubbing, I just like when the audio sounds real, even when it’s crappy like this…
