Dumb Decisions | The WORST 4th and 9 Run EVER | Bart Starr | Packers @ Giants (1983)

  • Remember when Freddie Kitchens called a draw on 4th and 9 in a 2019 game between the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Rams? Somehow, that was not even the worst 4th and 9 run of all-time. In a 1983 Monday Night Football game between the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants, head coach Bart Starr found a way to top that. This is a breakdown of that dumb decision

    JG9 drinking game:
    1. Take a shot whenever JG9 says "To put that into context, if you did nothing but spike the ball into the ground on every play, you would have a better quarterback rating than he had in that game"

    Bart had a chance to coach under Tom Landry in the early 70’s after he retired. Landry could have taught Starr how to win as a coach since the game was changing from the 1960’s. Unfortunately, Starr felt a loyalty to the Packers and accepted their offer to coach for Green Bay.
    Us Packers fans have blocked out the Starr coaching years and remember Starr for the great QB he was.
    RIP #15!!

      Do you also block out what a SHITTY Quarterback Bart Starr was BEFORE Vince Lombardi became his coach?

    • @bryanglass5818
      @bryanglass5818 Před 3 lety +2

      @@chadwickwhite6107 That’s an interesting point. The situation in GB was such a cluster F with the bad coaches prior to Lombardi. They even had Hornung playing QB even though he was a true HB (Yes, he played QB at ND but had no business playing QB in the NFL).
      Taking all of this into consideration, I’ll give pre-Lombardi Starr a pass.

  • @CTubeMan
    @CTubeMan Před 3 lety +14

    Starr got fired after the season. I initially heard it was the result of the porous defense after Starr let DT Mike Butler go to the USFL. However, I can’t help but think this decision had something to do with his dismissal.
    You said you’d say more about the Browns decision? Future video? Anticipation!

    • @bassguitari928
      @bassguitari928 Před 3 lety

      Starr’s firing had more to do with the fact that he’d been there nine years and had only two winning seasons to show for it (one of which was the 9-game 1982 strike season; the other being the 8-7-1 1978 season where the Packers started out 6-2 and collapsed down the stretch).

    • @yusefinc1096
      @yusefinc1096 Před 3 lety

      Starr got 9 years basically because of his GB career. Most coaches would have been out after 3-4 years. Nowadays 1-2 years.

  • @SPTO
    @SPTO Před 3 lety +15

    Man, Starr was a legit great QB in every way but as a head coach the man was totally out of his depth. It's kind of sad because for a brief period they had an offense that on its own would've at least garnered them more than one stinkin' playoff appearance. Of course, Dickey's star crossed career had a lot to do with that.
    That play call was egregious on every level. I have to hope he made the decision to go for the 4th down play but he wasn't the one to actually MAKE that call. I mean the man was a QB I think he'd know just how ridiculously hard it would be to gain 9 yards on the ground with HUCKLEBY of all people getting the ball.
    Oh well....

    Love the announcers on the call. "Boy, Barty's upset." "Can't say I blame him."
    Uhhh, yes tf you can?! He called a run play in a brutally clear run package on 4th-and-long! That alone, even before the analytics from earlier in the game, deserves blame on Bart Starr.

    This is a very interesting series. I was wondering in your intro segment of Dumb Decisions you show a series of clips. One of these is of a Head Coach throwing his clipboard in disgust and another yelling at a player named Maui'a. I was wondering who the Head Coaches were. I think the 2nd clip was of John Madden. Take care.

    What's NUTS is in 1983 GB Packers averaged more yard per pass (8.9 YPA) than any team in the NFL. So if GB threw a pass and just hit their average distance they would have been right at the first down marker. James Lofton averaged 22.4 YPC that season. We also had who might be the best TE in Packer history Paul Coffman and his 11 TD's and over 800 yards in 1983.
    Last thing... If your going to run the ball don't use your short yardage back. Gerry Ellis Average 4.9 Y/A in '83 while Huckleby Averaged 3.6 Y/A. Bart Starr HOF QB but dud of a HC.

    Star also made a decision in the last game of that season that might make a good video. Needing to win to make the playoffs, the Packers were clinging to a one point lead, and the Bears had driven to the 12. They had all three timeouts but used none of them. Bears kick the field goal, Packers lose, Starr fired after eight seasons and one winning year. According to Wikipedia, so you would want to confirm that, of course.

    I just watched the game. Two things need attention. Huckelby was not a good runner, true. But he was their receiver out of the backfield. Putting in Ivory would only be telegraphing a run. Still a terrible call though. You play to your strengths. Lofton, Jefferson, and Coffman were all fantastic possession receivers. Second, Bart Starr looked livid. The call was made by OC Bob Schnelker, as the announcers pointed out later.
