Magnetite Ventifacts at Old Stanton Quarry

- August 2015. Near Farthing, Wyoming, there is an abandoned iron quarry that my friend Alan and I visited. On the nearby hills there are outcroppings of the material they were after. Pure magnetite, beautifully made into polished, wind-sculpted ventifacts. I wish I would have brought back a big one, but they were so heavy, and we were so far from the car! I do have one on display, so ask to see it when you come!
Magnetite is a form of iron oxide with a spinel crystal structure, which makes it very hard.

Wow amazing, meteorite
Nooo, it is iron, magnetite. Not a meteorite. Really nice rocks though.

This is a volcanic rock, not a meteorite
"Volcanic" implies that it erupted somehow onto the surface. I believe that this formation is more of a dike: an intrusion of material into a higher level in the Crust, but not to the surface. A pure magnetitic magma erupted as lava: now THAT would be interesting! Magnetite is quite hard compared to many rock types that may have at one time hosted the dike intrusion.
My friend, I saw a lot of them in volcanic areas and I analyzed samples of them. They are really interesting, but the specialists do not pay any attention to them
Expose samples to fire and you will see that they explode due to the intense heat
This means that it is closer to Obsidian
@@cpsd7119 Obsidian is NOT magnetic, nor does it really contain much, if any, iron at all. It is more silicate content. Though it may LOOK similar...
There's a place in Limpopo with lots of these stones, they annoying the people
Why are the stones annoying??
@@chrissgraniteparadise2656 they are constantly underfoot and a real pain in the a__ if you fall on them.
