Thank you for all the wonderful comments about my dad. He is married to my mom Linda Johnson. Louis Johnson is truly talented and unsung for sure. He is still alive and will be 76 next month, however his health is failing and my mom and I care for all his needs. He is the original singer of the mentioned songs but unfortunately as you have read he was not given much credit for his work. He also sang with the spinners, drifters and many other groups as well as a solo album. He has suffered a stroke but can still sing and he can play the keyboard with one hand better than most with two. Please keep him and our family in prayer. Thanks interim jester for the awesome post and very accurate history.
Your father is both lucky and unlucky. Unlucky not to have had the recognition he deserved, but lucky and blessed to have been such a gift of a voice, and to have his family around him at this difficult time. We are lucky that we can still enjoy his soulful singing.
I have played keyboards for Burt Bacharach for twenty years, and he still does these songs pretty much this same way - you can tell your father! :). I love this version of these songs. Beautiful, and powerful. Soulful. Your dad is awesome.
The song by Lou Always something there to remind me was included in the stage act of my friends who were supporting act to the Beatles on numerous occasions in the cavern club and around Liverpool clubs in 1963/64 Lous version was by far the best. It was also done by a British girl singer of the sixties Sandie Shaw but Lou did it best.
I worked with Lou Johnson quite often 30 years ago and we remain friends to this day. These early recordings of songs that would later become monster hits are great examples of the way Burt Bacharach first envisioned them, a raw and perfectly assembled sonic tapestry. Lou is getting on in age and is not in the best of health. I would like him to have recognition for his contributions but right now he would benefit more from our prayers.
Interim Court Jester my dad has been trying to reach out to people from his past. If you truly knew him please look up Linda Johnson or Chatman on Facebook and we can put you in contact with my dad.
+Interim Court Jester....I'm not sure about prayers (I would have to believe in God first - which I fervently don't!) but I am more than happy to send Lou all my very best wishes and deepest respect. I sincerely hope you will pass these messages on and thank one of the greatest vocalists of our time for the absolute pleasure he has given me and countless other music fans over the decades. Be well Lou - we all love you!
My favorite version of this song (Always Something There To Remind Me) is Lou's rendering! Is he okay? Has he recovered? As to prayer, I gave up on that fairy tale long ago and yet I wish for Lou all the very best. My thoughts on prayer as follows ... no such thing ... pray to the pencil in your hand and you get about the same results in the morning (50/50) ... sorry, but I can't pretend it to be otherwise, no offense. Again, I hope Lou is okay and if possible tell me what was wrong with him. Extend to him the very best!
@@MrAnthonyVance I've seen many answers to prayer. I'm sorry for the way that you feel and for whatever disappointments that brought you to this conclusion. Thank you for being respectful of others . Thank you for you well wishes to Lou. (His wife is my cousin.) Best wishes to you Mr. Learner.
I kept hearing this version of Always Something There to Remind me in a commercial just about every day the past couple of weeks and it was stuck in my head so I searched for it and found this gem. What a fantastic voice!
God I’m embarrassed to admit I’m here from the Amazon commercial. The Naked Eyes version of this song from the 80s is one of my favorite songs ever. When I heard this version on the commercial my brain exploded. It’s so effing fantastic.
You think you’re embarrassed?? I actually thought the Amazon commercial version was some new, excellent, throwback sounding remake of the Naked Eyes song that sounded even better than what I thought was the original! ❤😂
I have to claim ignorance. I was blown away when this song wrapped up Mad Men Season 6 Ep. 8. Had no idea this song existed before Naked Eyes did it in the 80s.
My fav version is one sang by sandy shaw but that sung by him is beautiful as well one sung by stunning and good dusty springfield alive (in the sixtys,I guess)
"Always Something!" THIS is one of the most brilliant performances in over a half century of American Popular Music. What a voice, what a delivery, what an arrangement, what a SONG!! It's not just an opinion. By ANY standard, this is an example of timeless quality. I was a pro musician for over 30 years, worked with a great singer who sold over 20 million records and I've been on stages with some of the greats... Lou Johnson was sorely underrated, to say the least!
Best version ever, what a great talented man thank you for leaving us a great legacy of wonderful music, Oh how can I forget you when you left so many good songs to remind me. 🎹🎼🎷
Lou Johnson never got the credit he deserved but was much respected on the UK soul scene - and obviously. Bacharach and David were enormous admirers. Lovely to see footage of him
I spent 11 years with him, he was a hell of a talent and a very good person. In my opinion, he was a great keyboard player as well. really a good decade of my life. Linda was my replacement when we broke up. Wishing her well, and best wishes to Lou, but I know he's left us all now. One wonderful singer.
But Always Something There to Remind Me is actually a sad song of lost love. The tune is upbeat and bouncy - Bacharach and David had a knack! Kentucky Bluebird - under this title and also recorded as Message to Martha and probably best remembered as Message to Michael.
You're not alone; I'm young enough to have heard this song for the first time by Naked Eyes in 1983. Had no IDEA Mr. Johnson recorded it first or that Miss Dionne Warwick recorded it either.
buddah773 I ain't Ashame He Just didnt Have a Unique style and power like Chuck Jackson or sweet as Sam Cooke or soul as Marvin Gaye. Actually boring to look at dead audience..Funny Dionne Warwick sang the same songs but had bigger hits. Her song was Message to Michael not Martha..but its a Burt Bacharach song who discovered Dionne
When I first heard this version on an Amazon Prime commercial I thought to myself .... Oh that's Tom Jones he must have made a cover of the song . Then after some research I was able to find this amazing artist, that I had never known. Best version ever because of his amazing vocal and cadence.... Love and prayers
I always thought Sandi Shaw was the first to record this song. Someone corrected me on that ,so I googled this guy. What the heck! How come it’s 2019 and this is the first I’ve heard of him. What a fabulous job he’s done with both these songs.
I don't even think he was the first to sing it. Thats what I am trying to figure out Google says before Lou Johnson made it a hit "it was recorded as a deomo by Dionne Warwick in 1963" . I always thought Dionne Warwick's "Message to Michael" was the only version or at least it was the only version that I knew of. This one is great, sung with such feeling.
One of/if not the greatest Eighties remake in music history was “Always Something There To Remind Me” by Naked Eyes. That song was huge in the 80’s, it’s a very melancholy song. Can give you a feeling of love, missing someone, regret, reminder, and nostalgia.
I'm sorry, my condolences to the family of Lou Johnson as he passed in 2019! Thank goodness his talent was captured for posterity on this platform. RIP Louis Johnson.

The history of this song is actually pretty crazy. Interestingly, the song had originally been recorded as a demo for Dionne Warwick in 1963. Her demo was never released. Lou Johnson made the top 49. billboard with his smash hit in 1964. Burt Bacharach and Hal David, a very successful song writing duo, originally wrote the song in 1960. Dionne Warwick rerecorded her original version in 1967 and made the top 40 hit. This is the version used in the Black mirror episode, "Black Museum". Many artists have made covers of this song, but this is considered the original version by the two writers, as they thought the demo version was more of a rough draft.
Actually Lou Johnson hit with it first in the summer of '64 and is considered the original. The Sandie Shaw version came out a couple of months later and was huge in the UK as a #1 song. She never had the success in the US she did in Europe.
Millions of artists did this one but my earliest memory of hearing it is this one. I was like 5 years old. I also remember hearing it in some perfume commercial in the 60s but I don't if it was this version or not.

Glad to hear the new Amazon commercial used his cover of There's Always....
Many artists have made covers of this song, but this is considered the original version by the two writers, as they thought the demo version was more of a rough draft.
So dionnes or lous verios is original? Cause I cant really deduct it from your sentence
Actually Lou Johnson hit with it first in the summer of '64 and is considered the original. The Sandie Shaw version came out a couple of months later and was huge in the UK as a #1 song. She never had the success in the US she did in Europe.
Close to You was another Bacharach/David song that didn’t get to be a big hit until The Carpenters gave it a try.
@WaltGekko Their comment literally says he had the first hit and is considered the original... idk you commented this.
