Everyone in our family does their own laundry. My husband does his own, as do my 2 boys (ages 10 and 14) who do it weekly as part of their chores. I take care of linens (towels, cloths, bedding, etc) once a week and I still help my 10 year old fold/put away his laundry, but he is learning how to so he can be more independent and develop the good habit of starting/finishing this task. :)
Shari Puddicombe One day, your son’s partner will thank you for teaching him to do his own laundry. I taught my son at 10 years old as well. He is now 45 and teaching his 11 year old stepdaughter the importance of caring for herself and her own belongings.
I am spoiled rotten!!!! Since my heart attack in 2009 my wonderful hubby has done ALL of the laundry, including hanging things that need to be dried. It feels good after doing it all for 38 years myself. Gotta love him!!!! TFS. Take care.........
Would anyone else actually like to see the blizzard outside?? :)
yes lol
That dot tip is sheer genius!!
Absolutely!
Please be careful when running a dryer if you are not home or asleep. Our dryer caught fire when we were out one evening bc the timing mechanism broke and it just kept running. We came home to a house filled with smoke and my dad had to rescue our kitties before the fire department could get there.
I am a big fan of your channel!
JandK HARMON This actually happened to a friend of mine. An unattended dryer caused a bad fire. I never run the dryer when I am gone or even when I go to bed. Also had a friend whose toaster oven caught fire so I always unplug that. Unlucky friends I guess🤷🏻♀️
Yes! I am super worried with any electrical thing, since my cats are always home! I dont even leave a phone charging let alone a dryer
I would always welcome a snowy visual!
As a low income person, I don't own a washing/dryer machine. I go to the laundry mat once or twice monthly. Love socializing with fellow launderers. I'm a 54 year old stay at homer.
i read that as fellow murderers i was like OMG haha
Best thing about laundromat washing is you can do three loads in just over an hour if that many machines are available. A wash cycle is about 30 minutes if they still use top loaders, drying takes 45 minutes. I don't think I'll ever own a machine just due to the time suckage
💖💖💖 the idea to put dots on the care labels!!
Washing in the mornings is GENIUS!!!! I recently cleaned out my subscriptions and made sure you stayed on there! I love your tips!!! Thank you!!!
I'm very blessed with my husband worked in a textile industry (part of his job was to write care labels according to different materials) so he knows how to take care of our clothing & therefore, ever since I returned to workforce 15 years ago, I had delegated the laundry duty to him and had never looked back.
I have a 15min load ..so useful!!! And I wash everyday as I have a toddler, but my loads are very small and I never use a longer than 45mins cycle. Usually its 30-45 :)
The dots!!! So genius! Using for sure.
I love how you add humor to every video.
This is most definitely the best you tube channel EVER! Thanks for the great tips!
My husband of 40 years has been doing his own laundry as long as we've been married. He is retired military and from the get-go I wasn't doing his laundry up to military standards/expectations, so he started doing his own and it has continued.
I do laundry every day, usually 1 load a day.
Thanks Melissa you're the best!!!
The dot idea...brilliant!!! I have 3 girls and have been waiting for a tip like this one!!! Thank you!!!!!
Hi Melissa! I hope you can make a tutorial about how to wash a leather jacket. Not the spot cleaning but the entire jacket :) thank you in advance!!
I'm about to go to college soon, and your videos really help me prepare for a clean dorm room and this particular video was helpful for laundry purposes. Thank you.
My routine is I do one load of laundry everyday. If today is a load of my husband's, tomorrow will be one of mine and the day after that will be linens or towels (we have enough linens to go an entire month, and enough towels for a new towel per day per person for a week). Kitchen towels get done every weekend. Pretty much the same as yours in that I walk down stairs, ready for the day, with the load in my arms. Set that washing, wash any dirty dishes left from the night previous, make breakfast and go about my day!
Best cleaning channel on CZcams
Hi Melissa....Love the "dot" idea...would have been handy a few years back.....My routine is this....I wash a load every day....but...I put the clothes or towels or whatever needs washing and put in the detergent set the wash cycle and put my laundry basket upside down on it to keep out cats....then....when son gets home from his gym workout he adds his soaking wet gym clothes and starts machine....he puts all the clothes in dryer....takes his out after dryer stops....and then I take out mine usually next morning...after I clean out the cat boxes. :) Great video and lots of good tips. Hugs to you oxoxox
The dot tag marking thing is genius!!
Excellent video. I love your bold bath towels.
I have a family of 4 and if I don't tackle our laundry consistently, it becomes ridiculously overwhelming. I find myself washing about 3 times a week. Once a week, I wash the linens and towels.
i think that this channel is AWESOME!!! Keep the videos coming.
I am going to redo my laundry room. Being warm here all year round we can dry things outside. Love your videos. You by far get the award, no constant complaining and the really horrible music Keep them coming. Please
Other than kids to worry about, I already do all mentioned here - thanks to watching all your previous vids.
Keep up the good work, post more help for us bachelors, and, give my best to Chad. You guys are great! :)
I really enjoyed the tip on how to sort your children's clothes. I have 3 little girls and the the little ones definitely get hand me downs. thanks!
We added a four compartment sorter laundry basket a year ago and it has been a game changer! Although we've been married for 4 years, I'm still working to establish a routine. This video was helpful and will try to squeeze in a load in the morning when I wake up and put in dryer before heading to work. Thanks!
My laundry routine is to wash everything once a week. That way it doesn't pile up and I'm not washing clothes everyday.
I wash everything one day a week also. Takes me a while but atleast I feel sane about it. Otherwise I feel crazy doing laundry everyday.
I hate doing laundry so at least 6 days of the week can be spent doing something else!!
+CometsAllstarGirl Same! I don't go through enough clothes to do my laundry ever other day. I don't wash my pants after each use either (jeans gets 2 or 3 wears)
I used to sort by colors too, but the whites rarely got washed since there were so few of them, and I forgot something in the whites sorter was damp once and lost a nice shirt to mildew. So, now, I wash everything together and only use cold water. If we get a dingy looking white shirt, I'll do a quick small load of whites with bleach, but it's very rare. I do laundry for myself, my husband and our two teenage daughters. About every other day, I'll get everyone's hampers and do a big load. If there's more than normal, like on a snow day when they change a couple times after sledding, I'll do a load a day. We change the sheets once a week on all the beds, and I wash those separately. Towels and dishcloths etc all get washed with the regular load, unless they're really gross (like if I've cleaned the stove or fridge with some), and I'll do them separately. Now when they're dry, I put mine and my husband's into our laundry basket, and each of the girls' into their own baskets. I do not fold their clothes. They are supposed to fold and put theirs away, but who knows what actually happens to their clothes. They do have to bring the baskets back though so I can put their next load of clothes into them. I take our basket to our room, dump them out on the bed and take our basket back. Then I fold or hang everything (usually not much since I do about a load a day most of the time.) then put it all away.
I used to HATE laundry and let it build into a mountain, but I just got sick of it, and this new routine has become habit, and I will NEVER go back to those dark days.
I love your videos!
LOL!!! 2:57 Grabbing onto the Finial as you walk by the bannister. Still something I do in any house. Never gets old. ;-)
We have 3 boys, all grown now, and I used an 'X' on the label for the oldest, and each boy got another 'X' added when it became a hand-me-down. I also used a blue marker for this as it's easier to see than black, and an 'X' is easier to see than a dot.
In the summer, we wash sheets and towels weekly, and on the quick wash, and then hang them all on the clothes line to dry. In the winter, well, it might actually be once/month that the sheets get done. Saves on times, water, power and detergent.
I love the dresser and your outfit
I'm a busy mom of two active boys. I wash clothing Sunday, (get ready for school), Wednesday (mid week hump) and Friday (get ready for the weekend). All linens are Monday's and towels on Tuesday or Thursday depending on the week. My weakness is forgetting to fold until I have a mountain to take on. My New Years resolution it to use the top of my dryer as a folding station. Folding immediately and forcing me to put it all away before the next load is done.
Now that I am a single empty-nester, my laundry routine is very similar to yours. I am also a stickler for cleaning out the lint trap in my dryer after every load. I just had to have the heating element in my dryer replaced. Since I inherited my washer and dryer when I moved into my house 13 years ago, I had no idea how old my appliances were. When the repair person told me they were probably about 30 years old, I realized I must be doing something right (or I'm just incredibly lucky).
There's only me and hubby doing laundry. Our cat doesn't help but she says it's because she doesn't have any laundry to do. We have a very similar sorter to Melissa's. It located right by the washer and dryer. When the hamper upstairs gets full, we take it and sort stuff. Sheets are done separately or with light colors. I do all the towels separately. I do all denim separately because I don't want to mix it with delicate shirts and stuff. I love the delay feature. Get it ready the night before. It runs and finishes just as I'm getting up. Throw it in the dryer and that way it saves over half the time.
I use those pop up laundry hampers (the ones made of mesh that are tall, square and have handles) in my master closet. They fit under the hanging clothes really well. I have one for each of the types of laundry I do. They are the perfect size for a full load for my washer so when one gets full, I wash! This system keeps everything very organized. I used to spend sooooooo much unnecessary time separating clothes for laundry day.
Loooove the dot(s) on the tag idea!!! Definitely using!!! Love your videos :)
I love the "dot" idea for the kids!Thank you!Jenny from Korsika, with 3 kids!
hi melissa, blessed with sunshine almost the year round i do not use dryer at all. my routine is quite simple. i have two laundry baskets for the two bathrooms that we have and i take them up every other night to sort and wash - usually night coz then i am free and can either watch netflix or read a book till it gets done. or sometimes put it on delay end so the first thing i do in the morning is to hang them up for drying
I wash and dry laundry everthing every saturday, 5 loads, and my son, 18, who always needs money does the complete folding and ironing for 25€ a week. he is pricy, but irons excellent. The only thing that drives me crazy is, he starts his work sunday evening, 10 p.m.
What a lovely, spacious laundry room. In most countries, a separate laundry room is a luxury. It's either incorporated into the garage or the bathroom. Great tips, thanks.
I truly love your channel, I find it really great in every way, there is not even one Item in my home that I can not clean with the help of the videos from this channel. :)
Your shows are excellent!!! 💗❄️
Omg using dots on the label to sort the kids clothes...I remember my parents doing the EXACT same with me and my sisters! We also had our own colors (mine was purple, one sister was green, the other sister was orange). My parents would sew little threads to the back of our socks, glue ribbons to our suitcases, get laundry bins...all in "our" color to distinguish things!
We have one basket in our closet which we both use. Every three to four days we do two to three loads. All towels and kitchen cloths are thrown down the basement steps into a basket at the bottom. My sweet hubby does the washing and I do all the folding and putting away. Just a bit of ironing for his hospital scrubs and that's it. After 43 married years together, we have it down to a science.
We have a quad laundry sorter: mine, my husband, whites, and towels. I also have a separate hamper for my work clothes. We wash once a week. We also wash bedding and throw sheets one a week.
Love Anthony!
I do my sheets and towels every Sunday so I start out each week fresh!
G'day Melissa - You pretty much pegged my routine as well in line with yours. Good show!
Cheers!
~Jonathan
Love your red nails. My laundry routine is simple. Whites every other week; brights and darks get washed together in cold water. I also use ammonia as a brightener for those colored clothes.
My family does the exact same thing! The dot method, I mean.😊
very helpful info.
What's your laundry routine?
+Clean My Space One load a week for the two of us, two if we were wearing heavy clothes. Another load every couple of weeks for other stuff (sheets, towels, etc). ... We live informally and retired, so it isn't like we have to go to the office daily.
+Clean My Space
First:..love your videos. But as an answer, I do laundry as I have to. We are a family of soon to be four + my husband has a very dirty job including very heavy clothes, so I kinda have to do laundry every other day, but double load on saturday or sunday to wash husbands "uniform". :) But I love to do it as I love to clean to + your videos totally get me in the mood to clean. :) Keep up the good work.
+Clean My Space Right now i'm 32 weeks preggo with twins and on bedrest so my husband does all the laundry which is just spending a day every week or two. When the babies are born i plan on doing a load every other day or so to keep on top of it.
+Clean My Space depends on how much time I have :) I usually do a few loads every few weeks because I also separate reds and blues. Usually I also add linens and towels (that are not too dirty) with my cloths.
+Clean My Space i usually do 3 per week or 4 depending on our usage of cloths ,, 2 for whites, 1 for darks , and i may add a load for my sheets or covers :)
I have two kids, young kids, and my laundry routine is I do our laundry on Sunday's. I always clean the dryer lint trap, and I've been teaching my daughter, who is 7 years old that you should do it every time and why. And I say this everytime so it gets in her head. I know she's only 7 years old but you're never too young to learn about safety and taking care of stuff.
ms.meLLisa's and mr.chad's Laundry routine = my routine
in daily base in the house include Linens, Tablecloths , dish towels, Towels, rugs, Blanket and Bred Spread and curtains
very helpful and fun video :) my routine is doing clothes once a week, my linens every 2 weeks (i let the others in my fam decide when they'll wash their linens), my BIG heavy winter blanket once a month (i make my bed frequently so it's never too dirty or messy &i don't sweat), towels every 2 months. i do 2-3 loads a week (lights& darks) & stick to nighttime. we're fortunate that we have space in the basement laundry area to have clothing lines indoors which we utilize far more than the drier & clothing lines in the backyard during summers. i also srive not to wear something only once before washing as that's unnecessary :)
you have helped me sooooooo much I really appreciate you doing these videos. I mean my room used to be up to my knees in random things that I never had the time to clean! so after I watched your videos appropriate to each mess. my life is cleaner(and there are no roaches under my pillow anymore. PS. I'm very sarcastic so please reply to this😁😁😁😁😁i would love it if you did!
I used to write the first name letter of my kids. I also separate the clothes in three different loads. I don't like to fold the linen but I always do it. Thanks for the tips.
My routine as a family of 4 consists of me washing and folding one load everyday. Since I'm a working mom, I utilize the delayed start feature on my washing machine. I'm going to post a video about this on my channel.
We have a family of 6 and I'm drowning in laundry. I can't wait to see your video. :)
Marriage & Motherhood thank you
I agree! One load a day for the win. I use the delay feature that I set at night to start wash so it ends when I get up in the morning. I put that load to the dryer and it’s hung or folded after I get dressed.
We have one laundry basket to collect all the dirty clothes. It's located on our "laundry bench" which has kind of a big drawer. Into that drawer I sort by temperature (30°C, 40°C, 60°C), according to german labels. Whenever one of these piles is big enough, I sort it by color (white and not white).
I never let the washing machine run when I leave the house. It once broke and all the water flooded the kitchen floor and dripped through the ceiling of the people living below us. It was a disaster!
And I would never let the dryer run alone either. Even when you clean the lint filter regularly, it can burn down the house.
Whites, Darks, Towels, Linens (independent loads) each load once a week (4 loads weekly). UK viewer, love your vids clean my space.
Fun tip put a couple of dry towels in with your wet clothes in the dryer. The towels will help soak up some of the moisture from your clothes. Bonus, less drying time = less money and less waiting!!
We do our laundry on weekends too mainly Sunday’s .. lol!!
I do the 3-loads thing also. The evening before laundry day, I'll throw clothes in my machine. One fun twist... I've turned it into a game in which my 18 month old son throws clothes into the machine for me. It helps make the process go faster, and he is nearby so I can keep an eye on him, and it's just fun kiddie playtime goodness. Hehehe!
My laundry routines pretty simple, I gather as I go, I walk the entire house looking for laundry (dog towels, rags, stray dirty clothes cause theres a lot of careless people here) and I usually sort them by colour and thickness so the thick stuff gets to be on the bottom of the laundry hampers then the lighter stuff on top, I always alternate between clothes and towels. So it's white clothes, white towels, then special items like curtains or bedding& sheets if they're white and go like that. ( I usually do it every 3 days or so) When it comes to sorting before they go in the wash, for my clothes I always have a hamper, and I organize them by colour and thickness in the hamper so when I do laundry it's at least partcially done before I even begin, as for the lint trap, I always empty it out, I even save some of the lint for make shift fire starters for camping, and also the laundry caps from the huge tubs of detergent, cause aint nobody got time to grab the other cap from the bottom of the washer.
*PRO TIP #1* If you ever run out of dryer sheets like I've done a couple of times, theres always some used sheets that are semi starched, grab a few of those and reuse them till theyre too soft from lack of starch.
*PRO TIP#2* If youre washing throw rugs or runners, be sure to fold them in half and turn them inside out (if you can) if they have a funky smell from not being vacuumed often enough, i always use a mix of Bleach, baking soda and borax if it's really bad. I have coloured rugs so it's a little hard to do sometimes.
...My ex-husband washed one of my Chanel suits (it was in the dry-cleaning bin - that partially explains the "ex", I suppose!)... Also, I use only crystal hangers...Instead of marking the tags, which are appearing less and less on men's and kid's shirts, I assigned hanger colours to each family member, and they could get them off the hanging rack instead of my delivering them; this was a huge time-saver, and regardless of the number of kids, it was easy to figure out who got what. Thanks for your tips - your home is lovely and your presentation is great!
I do laundry much like like you do.I don't have the space for a cart like yours, I am looking for different ways to store those loads until there is enough. Got any ideas for apartment dwellers like myself? You don't want it in the open to share those loads with everybody. But you need air and space to store them until you have a full load. Living in an apartment means you are paying for each load. So budget wise it is important to have a full load.NEXT VIDEO?
When I first lived on my own, I didn't know about lint traps in dryers. My dryer stopped drying clothes over time and I got frustrated, eventually kicking it once. When I kicked it, the lint trap shot out of the top and hit the roof, it looked like a fuzzy teddy bear was being forced out of the slot, and the screen was covered in inches of impenetrable lint. I felt so stupid.
I still have that dryer after 7 years. I keep it clean and it runs great. I also say nice things to it when I use it, that's the true secret to its good performance.
Trisorter? Smart! I'm from the USA and it's my first time seeing one. I'll have to find one on Amazon.
Very helpful! Thank you :)
Any recommendations for the best laundry machines on the market? Thank you :)
chad's routine was hilarious. :D
Just like you, we each do our own laundry, and I am the one who looks after the "household" items - or else the boys in the house would wait until the linens and towels walked themselves to the laundry room....thanks for the tips. MWA
I separate my laundry out into several sections 1.bedding, 2.work towels and unhappy-for-hair cloths, 3.body towels, hair turbans, and face cloths, 4.general clothes (including a bag for all my underwear so I can see where they all have ended up!).
Due to the nearest washing machine being at the launderette (and so spending more than I would when I own a machine), I wait until I have a minimum of 2 super full carrier bags (bag-for-life) of the specific section (as they get treated differently) before heading down there. I wait until the items are dry before putting them into the bags, to minimise mould etc. Some items need to be separately cleaned before being in a wash (kind of double washed!). I tend to not buy that many clothes that need to be carefully washed, and if they don't then they can't really spend time in my wardrobe. I tend to mend items before washing them to make sure that my mending of them can handle at least a wash or few.
My mom did something similar to the dots, except she would sew a little piece of colored thread onto an inconspicuous area, like the inside of a seam or bottom of a sock. Each one of us kids had a different color
I would love to see a video on shampooing your carpets!!! Like maybe a DIY shampoo with a vinegar rinse or something!
+Clean My Space one thing I use is a Dirt Devil hand vac to clean my lint trap. I also have a "dryer snake" which is an extra long bristle brush but I rarely get anything from it because of the Dirt Devil.
This is why I do laundry soo often.
My laundry is in the basement, so I avoid it at night... Start laundry in the am and this really forces me not to forget a load, since even finished basements creep me out. No set laundry routine, just when I have a full load unless something might run color or is a hand wash type item.
ps: beautiful bracelet!!!
It's just me so I don't have tons of laundry. I use to do it every week but I find I can get by every other week. I always change my bath and kitchen towels once a week and wash my bed sheets about every two weeks. I don't worry too much about lights, dark and medium colors that much. If a particular garment needs to be washed separately I will do that. I play this by ear. I always wash my bed sheets separately because things always seem to get caught in the fitted sheet if I don't. Also, I use commercial machines which cost money so in order to save, I wash most of my clothes on delicate so more can be washed together. I also hang dry lots of shirts for savings. My cleaning rags get washed and dried separately when needed. Other things like bathroom rug also gets washed every now and then when needed. I don't really know why but I have always preferred to wash in the morning or as early in the afternoon as possible.
Three loads once a week on weekends for whites, brights and darks (that's how I sort my laundry), towels and bed sheets on wednesdays every other week. Kitchen towels and cleaning microfiber cloths every month since I have enough to keep going. Bathroom mat also every month or so.
I have 5 stackable laundry bins in the linen closet set out as 3 places to sort laundry. While I always separate whites, colors, and darks, my husband tends to mix darks and colors. The 2 extra bins lets me sort them all out to see if there is a full, or partial load. Sometimes I'll have a full load, and half load of one type. I might wait, or wash the smaller load. That means weekly I do about 5 loads all total for the 2 of us. That doesn't include the presoak whites I do on occasion.
Great vdo
I hate pairing socks after they come out of the dryer. I found some sock rings online so I can clip the socks together as they're going into the hamper. It really helps eliminate the lost sock syndrome too.
I put my daughters socks (age 3, those things are small and hard to find) in a mesh bag throw them in the laundry and dryer. Afterwards all I have to do is empty the mesh bag and they are all there! Saves me A TON of time hunting them down. 😉
+veronoem I shove all the socks into a basket as they come out the dryer and I find them when folding everything else. At some point later in the day I sit down with my two year old and we play 'sock snap!' It's helping him learn colours and big/small.
+Heather Beatty-Eastman I buy 2 packs of several differently designed socks, so there are a total of 4 socks the same. I then *have* to work out which foot they went on, so I can work out the pairings. As there are only 4 socks in total the same, it is much easier.
Thank you Melissa for the great idea putting dots on the clothing label I have multiple kids that I usually buy similar items :)
Awwwww, Anthony Bourdain ☺️❤️
I'm glad your husband does his own laundry. I hate it when the wife gets stuck doing everyone's laundry on top of a full-time job. It's not fair!
3:42 wow, that is a nifty looking washing machine!
So huge and shiny :)
I wash for 2 adults and 2 children in my house. I try to do a load of darks every other day of regular clothes (we all wear jeans a lot), I do a load of whites once a week. Bedding & towels weekly. I have a very small washer so I can't let the clothes pile up or it's an all day event! :)
I use your system for my laundry. I always wash my undies separate from my other items. I use a fragrance free detergent and white vinegar for my undies. I am trying a new trick with the dryer now that static season is here. I use two wads of aluminum foil in the load of clothes to keep the static away. So far, so good.
I like sorting while I fold. So when I go upstairs to put it away I grab a bunch; throw it in the drawer it goes then move to the next drawer or location so I don’t waste time opening and closing the same drawer more than once
I basically do the same but in larger amounts. I also have a specific soap for each type of clothing... I also double wash the towels cause I think they don't get as clean after the first wash... Never heard of the vinegar trick.... Must try!
Mine is pretty much like yours, Only I do my husbands as well. I have a bin in my room with sections. I and I do laundry once a week. Sheets once a week, and towels and dish towels once a week as well, but are removed/replaced every other day.
I do atleast one load of clothes and one load of towels a week linens about every week and a half and scrubs (I am a nurse) twice a week. Every two weeks I wash decorative blankets.
Would love to see a video of how to clean cloth diapers. Your a pretty natural person it seems like that would be right up your alley.
if she doesn't have kids she really cant know much about it
+Jennlewis16 My mom did use cloth diapers when we were kids. She said she put the solids in the toilet, then put the diapers in a bucket with a little bit of chlorine and detergent, let them soak overnight, and then washed them in the hottest load available. If you don't like chlorine you can use OxyClean or something like that. But they sure need to be soaked for at least 8 hours.
Our laundry area is part of our basement, but so it my hubby's workshop. I love that he can build beautiful things from just a pile of wood, I just hate that I end up with sawdust on my W/D. I wish the W/D was separated from the rest of the basement with actual walls. Blessings!
