HOW TO INTRODUCE DOGS AND BIRDS TO EACH OTHER

- Here is a video on how to introduce dogs and birds to each other! Introducing dogs and birds to each other will require training, supervision, and precautions. Before introducing your bird to your dog, it's important to have a firm understanding of both bird and dog body language and behavior as that will help guide you in the introduction process. If your dog has a strong prey drive, it's essential to redirect your dog's prey drive away from your birds and onto other activities to tame their prey drive. Have someone help you during the introduction process and even consider hiring a dog trainer if needed to tame your dog's prey drive. Dogs and birds can get along in the same household but that will take lots of patience, training, and supervision.
SAFETY IS THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. Please always ALWAYS supervise your pets and if you strongly feel that your dog cannot be around your bird, then it will be better to keep them separate.

I donât even have a dog but i am still watching this video đđ
Ahahhahah me toooo
Omg SAME
i don't even have a parrot lol
I have 2 dogs but no birds so uh
Me too. But... just in case ;)
I have 6 house dogs and Iâm PRETTTTYYY sure a single bird would create chaos between my dogs:( I just admire how smart and beautiful birds are and Iâve watched a million videos about birds which I know is not an easy job especially because I would want to give it the freedom to fly around.. therefore I will will keep watching these videos and living the fantasy of owning a bird through CZcams đ
I think breed matters a lot. We picked our Pyrenees because they are bred to watch over prey animals on farms, including chickens. She was super gentle and protective of my conure.
I was kind of scared when I got my cockatiel because my dog is a terrier and those breeds are known to hunt small animals. We actually got reAlly lucky because my bird is the one bullying my dog. We are always careful when they are around each other but this video will help sooooo many people and birbs. Ur videos are so helpful, Keep doing what youâre doing!
Thanks so much for watching! â€ïž I think we got pretty lucky too! Ava never really goes after the birbs which Iâm super grateful for! There were a couple times in the beginning where the birbs would fly to Ava to inspect her and thatâs when Ava pretty much learned that bird bites hurt! Now Ava would rather much avoid the birbs because she scared of them but sheâll always be nearby when theyâre eating so she can eat whatever falls to the floor lolol
Do you only let your bird free fly time when your dog is outside, or in another room? I have two mutts, terrier mixes.
Thank you so much for the info. I have a baby cockatiel named Jack and a 5 year old golden retriever named Sally. Sheâs a sweet dog but I wouldnât trust her alone with him. Theyâve learned to coexist when Iâm cuddling them both.
I just got a parrot, Paco, Maxximus. I brought him home and introduced him to my 2 year old Cane Corso that I have personally trained. So far there have been no incidents. Paco and Maxximus were both curious at first, and Maxx is super interested when Paco jumps down to the ground. I have leash control with commands whils Maxx is off leash, but I wouldn't recommend that trust to anyone else that hasn't trained their own dog as much as I have. We live in Esteli, Nicaragua and off leash walk all the time. He only ever chases cats.
This is kinda off topic but... Ava is so cuteđ„°đ¶
Your advice came just in time! We've been talking about a dog, but we have two two-year-old cockatiels. I was worried we could never make it work, but your video is giving me the confidence to seriously consider it. We've been working on recall training, but one of my birds isn't very food motivated -- can you suggest an alternative?
Hi did you ever get a dog and if so would you mind telling me how it went with getting them used to each other
We had a dog, Quinn, a lab\pit mix, before we got our pineapple conure, Amie. Amie was clipped when we got him so we were very careful about them being near each other. We have bonded with Amie and have taught him recall. We introduced the two animals slowly. We allow them to be in the same room together. Quinn is a very good boy. He keeps his distance. Amie ignores Quinn. So far it is working!
i'm noticing the birds eat everything except for the broccoli bits lol, really informational video
I had budgies for yrs.And some really tame free fly birds.Growing up though my mother had cats and budgies.Funny enough the cat would often climb behind the bird cage in the window and chatter away at the squirrels and birds outside.Never threatened the birds in the house or did the birds show any fear of them.âș
I have a dog and am planning on getting a green cheek within the next year. My dog has experience with a ringneck. My dog is a hunter, not with birds as much, rabbits are preferred. My bird will stay fully flighted just in case. This video is great and I will definitely implement some of this when I am ready to get the bird.
have you gotten a bird yet?
Iâm on this right now⊠my dog is 5 yrs old and just got a pineapple cheek .. ny dog is very curious,, he hasnât bark at him but he cries because he is curious.. how did it go with u?
I love you, your critters and your channel. Thanks for all the info!
I have two dogs and two birds who I got at roughly the same time. Toby (schnauzer-yorkey mix) almost ate Peridot (parrotlet) today causing me to have a melt down and hyperventilate after I got Peri back in his cage. Went on CZcams to find what I can do to stop that from happening again, so thanks for having this video!
Your dog and birds are so cute! Perfect pets for you!
The way the dog looks at them â€đ
Your Dog is Frikkinâ adorable â€
I have 3 shih tzus and I am adopting an umbrella cockatoo. This video was very helpful. Although containing 3 dogs on a leash is daunting. Iâm only really concerned about one of them having predatory behavior.
How is it going for you?
That was so cute when the bird fed the dog!
I needed to hear this because i have two parakeets and thinking of getting a puppy next week thank you so much for this video advice
Thank you for this! I have a young flighted (agree-thatâs essential!) cockatiel (Ringo) who is quite fearless and 2 older dogs. I got lucky because, from day one, there have been are no problems. I think thatâs probably mainly due to the fact that they are seniors. Doxie-mix just doesnât care and Vizsla (very bird driven in her prime) is sensitive to noises and hates the chirping so she leaves the room when Ringoâs out. When she does decide to stay, she just tries to ignore him. Of course, like you say, I never assume anything and do not leave them unsupervised! BUT, I am getting a mini-poodle puppy soon so I was so glad to find this video. You did a great job in covering the topic! Thank you, thank you!!đđ»đđ»đđ»
Thanks for the video! â€
aww you're birds are really cute :)
Thank you so much this helps a lot
Super useful! Thank you so much!
This is such a well thought out and educational video đ„°

This is a GREAT video. Thank you so much â€ïž
im still gonna watch this even tho i would never put my birds around my dogs since there so small i just dont trust it
Same
If it were for me I would never put my dog around my bird but my family insists that they should be together even with no training đ€Šđ»ââïž
I have had a pineapple conure and had the best puppy ever
Oh my what a stunning video, you have such a cute pets.đ
That's the most and best video I've wanted to see that's a best one that's by one barks all-time even when in cage and he moves and squicks
Very helpful! Thank you.
my dog is a bird dog, and will sorta hunt birds so i canât let her in my room lol! my big dog loves all my birds, and will let them fly on his back and will cuddle them, itâs my small dog that hunts all birds đ€Šââïž
me too except my dog is a little scared of them :)
Same! My German pointer will happily let my Quaker sit on his head but my dachshund will chase my birds 24/7 for no reason!
I have a Jack Russel terrior. They are known for hunting but I introduced my parrot and budgies slowly. Recently my dog was ill and my birds could tell. Our parrot would have come to the vets if he could to see my dog is ok. They all love each other. When I'm out my dog lays in the bird room and sleeps. The birds arnt locked in cage and they are safe. I know I'm lucky and don't rely on your dog been ok cos mine is.
@@KitsFishing well she attacks them. and already killed 3 so yeah no. i didnt ask
@@kelm5610 sorry to hear that.
EXCELLENT tutorial!!! You brought up topics and ideas that I would never never think of. Mahalo for posting such a valuable and informative video! Aloha! đșđđ€
Thanks
Loving ur channel!
thank you so much! đ
I have a cat and plan to get a bird I know dogs and cats aren't similar, but this video just gave me more tips for how to make her not hurt the bird. I have been binging a lot of your videos thanks for the information :)
@Senpa1Rose thatâs amazing good luckđ
I there Senpa. I have a cat too, very territorial, but Iâll have a bird and Iâm a little scared!!!
Thatâs why I came to watch the vĂdeos.
What are the basics that you recomend to me?
Thanks :)
@@dianaborges1545 if you get a bird be . Also good luckđđcareful and keep your bird and cat separated
Girl thanks for making this video. I was about to get a dog (Jack Russell Terrier) and I have 8 birds.đ Thank You!!!!!!!!!
Just curious if you got the dog. Recently I adopted 2 JRT mixes; have one parakeet. It's only been a week; hope I can work something out. The dogs go bonkers when they are crated. But my poor bird needs her flight time!! I miss when she could hang out outside the cage for hours without worry.
Good...!
my cockatiel loves your vids
my bird follows my dog everywhere
My Cockatiel Ash is on my shoulder rn, we watch your vids together
I'm about to go ahead and pull the trigger on getting a medium small parrot. My only concern at this point is how my dog is going to take it. He's a 96 lbs Doberman. He's absolutely a sweetheart, he's never shown aggression towards anyone or anything, and he's super well trained. He's 8 1/2 years old and super lazy, but I don't crate him, so I think I'd have to make sure I put the cage in a room he can't get to while we are out.
I just got a bird, so this was very helpful!!!
Thank you very very useful
My dog is big put heâs chin in the side, beautiful cross, always gets comments, when he was younger he was very playful, a chicken flew in the garden, we new because all we could see was a big wiggly tale bouncing around, the chicken was unhurt & returned safely :) now heâs a lot more chilled been around young children & animals. Iâve been waiting years to get a parrot as thought it would be unfair on the amount of fun energy my dog had Now heâs old but donât have to worry about him accidentally stepping or hurting one, hes still a tad clumsy doesnât relies hes size but think heâd get on beautifully with a parrot now & might even help rejuvenate him :)
here before 200 views
We have a terrier mix that grew up with 3 other dogs. Since the other dogs have passed away, our terrier mix has become dog aggressive..... all 15 pounds of her. When she was younger we had chickens and the dog would mingle with the chickens when I was with them and she was always good with them. She has always chased and killed rabbits and lizards when she could catch them but she is too old for that now. I see that she chases all the wild birds now and barks at them if she feels they are perched "too low" on the trees outside. She seems happy that they fly away and we've seen her chew on dead baby birds that fall out of their nests when they are only a few days old. We get a lot of that during certain months, as we live in the desert and that happens quite a bit every season. We correct her and she listens and drops the birds but I'm not sure if she would still be good with chickens, the way she was when she was younger. She is a very obedient dog and listens to all commands, including "drop it" or simply "no". I'm not sure if it's safe to bring a bird in our home, even though they would never be unsupervised. We're thinking of getting a rescue bird but I want to make sure everything will be safe first. I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks very much.
Best bird advice yet!
BTW, what model Prevue cage is that?
I have a pitbull and an Amazon, they get along well! My Amazon tries to preen and nibble on my dog sometimes
I have a dog called Blessing and i am getting a cockatiel so this was very helpful.
I've just moved into a bigger house that allows pets I've always wanted both a quaker parrot and a border collie and deciding how to choose between them or get both. I've got a chance to get a eight week old collie puppy and a 10 week old hand raised quaker parrot both close enough to collect would bringing them both home as babies and having them grow up together help with ensuring they get on. I'm a introvert and sell online rather than going out to work all day and barely leave the house apart from going out hikes so have plenty of time to supervise and train both puppy and the baby parrot
YĂ yyyyyy new vid I love youuuuuuuuuu
Not in love you đ
But love you fan
Edit
omggggggggg I got a like and reply yesssssss this is the first time one of my faf youtuber has done that
Hehe hi! Thanks for the love! â€ïžâ€ïž
Im getting a pair of lovebirds in a few months and I have a Husky in my room at all times. Sheâs used to birds since I had quills earlier o.o I hope Iâll be able to act accordingly to bond with my birds, even with my Husky around
I plan on getting a budgie or cockatiel at some point, and this is extremely helpful! Iâve been training my dog since I adopted her a year ago, and sheâs done really well, but I do need to tame her prey drive a bit more. She does well in the pet store, as she completely ignores the birds, but she tends to chase them out in the yard. Weâve been working on that though though redirecting and positive reinforcement.
But do you recommend any breeders?
Thanks. My family has a golden doodle who keeps going after my budgie, so much so that I had to put my budgieâs âhomeâ up on a bookshelf in order to keep it out of the golden doodleâs reach.
Thank you so much for this video! I had a dog already, then rather impulsively got a baby cockatiel. I'm very nervous about introducing the chick, as it's still at the breeder's until it can eat pellets. However the chick seems pretty well bonded to me already (it was already preening me on our second meeting) and our dog is super chill, so hopefully everything will be okay!
Hey I'm sorry for asking but I love your vids and would like to know how you teach your bird to get used to a harness. I'm still going through the process of learning my bird to walk on my hand, but he's out of his cage all day so I would like to take him with me outside
Very nice
Thanks this solved my only negativ thing about buying dogđđ
I canât wait to say yeah I was an og i subscribed back when she had like 6k subs
My dog barely knows that my bird exists đ
Now I can show my dad this video and beg more for a brid
Thank you!!! I was searching for a guide like this. We have 2 african lovebirds living with us already for quite sometime now so I'm anxious introducing our adopted puppy arriving on January with the flock. I hope the 3 of them would get along.
Did they get along? Cause I've got 7 birds and introducing a dog so I'm curious about it let me know please.
This is very helpful. đ I have dogs and have been wondering if it might be possible to get birds some time in the future. Maybe one day once my youngest gets over the hyper teenager phase!
Hello Rosa, well I've got 6 pet Birds and just got a dog a few days ago, he's a Maltese Shih tzu mix and they're bonding, my indian Ringneck just gave him a kiss, after some encouragement so they could strengthen their bond from a early age and grow up with each other. My Birds are about 3 to 5 years old but he's just a puppy and will hopefully have a strong bond and be kind too each other.
Two of my Cockatiels are still a bit unsure and scared of the new arrival but a couple of my Birds are warming up too him already, so hopefully they will soon as well.
My new dog is so cuddly, playful, affectionate and very funny and that's just what I wanted, we both get separation anxiety already and don't like being away from each other, if I'm out of the house for a bit, he cries.
Thanks for the vid, we've decided to get a puppy but already have two birds and were wondering how best to introduce them
Iâm watching this video because when I grow up Iâm going to have a pug and a parrotđ¶đ„
this is really helpful since in maybe 1-2 years I will get a bird but the only problem I have is my medium-sized dog
How do I train my dog to like my cocktail as when she starts making a noise he starts shaking and sometimes it's quite a lot but the thing is he was here first and he is an older dog and her cage is in the from room
I had 3 dogs first and introduced my GCC to them. It didnât take very long for them to be okay with my bird, BUT my dogs have a relatively low prey drive, about a month later, my dogs sleep with the bird around and if he happens to land on the floor, there is almost zero reaction from my dogs so I guess I just got lucky. I had almost no training or introduction to each other.
We have a poodle (10 years old) and our male eclectus parrot (6 months old) arrives tomorrow, going to be interesting how they get on. I hope they become friends.
I worry about what will happen when they meet for the first time.
I have 2 sweet dogs but they do chase rabbits and such, I plan on getting a green cheeked conure soon so hopefully it works out! Ones big but I trained him very well so hopefully heâll be easier thsn the little one
I have both and i got bird today that's why I'm seeing this
My family got a puppy last month. He is to small to hurt my birds, but they havenât met. I just donât risk it at all. And how my family and house is my birds stay in my room and my puppy says in a playpen if he isnât being watched because heâs so small. I just donât risk it, period.
Me to
I literally was thinking about learning how to train my dogs to be able to be nice, even if they aren't comfortable around each other outside of the cage!
ok so big thing im doing this in reverse i have a dog and im getting a green cheek conure here pretty soon and im nervous a bit she chases everything thats smaller than her thats not a dog and its really nerve racking for me im sure she will figure it out cause shes very smart but shes also super stubborn but will listen to me if im stern enough thank you for the tips im really going to try your steps
Hi! Thank you so much for this video. Iâm sure youâre not an expert but I would love your advice if youâre willing! Iâm not sure who else to turn to! My bird is 23 & I basically inherited her from my mom, unfortunately her wings have been clipped & sheâs unable to fly. Does this video still apply to her? Is there anything I can do to help w that? Can her & my dog still coexist? Are there any extra tips you have especially applying to a flightless bird? Thank you again! I canât even let her out of her cage w the dog around & itâs really hard to keep them separated so any advice will help!
My dogs have made it clear they would love to eat my birds. We put a cheap used screen door on the bird room/avairy. Blocks the dogs from seeing them and allows them to chat with us when we aren't in the avairy! Attached a bungie to the inside of the door so it will close behind me when hands are full! It may look silly at the end of the hall but works beautifully!
First!!!!!đ
Iâm 3rd
i have 3 dogs, and i really want a bird. they r all a type of greyhound and iâm scared but i will definitely try
I really enjoyed your video. I have an 8 year old jack Russel and looking to adopt a young Indian parakeet... The bird has not been tamed yet and is pretty shy. My jack is well behaved but has got a hunting instinct and will chase birds, rats squirrels etc. I work from home, so I would have the time but not sure if it is a good idea.
I have birds too one is named pip and the other is named Ria and we have a west high land white terrier and we are wondering if we should put the birds near the dog cause our dog tried to knock down there cage once.
I have the same types of birds as you the green cheek conures they are currently on eggs and am planning to train one of their babyâs
I got my very tame cockatiel a day ago. My dog is a cockalier (mix of cocker spaniel and cavalier) so his prey instinct is very strong, we also have rabbits which he gets along with very well. I hope it will be the same with my bird Bella. The breeders suggested, that I should getting them used to eachother, so I'm gonna try your suggestions in this video. Thank you very much :D
My dogs are extremely old and small. They're so gentle. Actually, one of them is actually afraid of birds lol
I can't tell if my dog is aggressive or excited towards my bird. I don't think I'll ever risk them meeting outside of the bird cage. I love them both. đđ Also where did you get that cage? Its awesome and I want to upgrade my bird's cage.
Omg thatâs me right now..
I have two saint bernards ones a year old and the other is 6. i am looking to get a male eclectus but i am so worried my saints will frighten the little guy when i bring him home. i will have my bird mostly in a separate part of the house however the dogs will have to walk by him when going to do there business. do you think there's hope of them coexisting?
can you do this wth a puppy or only with an mature dog
I finally got my dog to remain calm and uninterested around my new green cheek...but now she is charging him. She will jump down and start attacking him and I am worried she will get herself hurt. I want them both to exist(with me) in my study, as he's very attached and the study is where she can e out and about.
I already have a dog and am looking to get a bird. Would these tips still help?
I want to get some sort of bird in the future, my dog is very hyper, Loves to jump but only seems to jump on people when excited, I also have a cat but he does learn to leave things alone, Iâm not expecting them to be best friends but I would prefer them to understand that they are both in the room with one another and them leaving eachother be
I donât have a parrot nether a dog and watching this video đ
I have a little parrotlet and am hoping to get a low prey drive dog breed like a Bichon Frise, however I wouldnât feel comfortable having them out at the same time especially because my parrotlet only stands about 4â and I am very attached to her! Would introducing them to each other so they get used to each other but not letting them out at the same time be ok? I get the making sure they know of the otherâs existence and not keeping them completely separate but I would feel too worried letting them out together even if they were supervised.
i don't have a bird although I will soon, I'm hoping for a sun conure, I do have a pitbull he's very friendly but I'm still scared reason being don't want the bird to get too scared and never trust him or even worse not trust me so thank you for the video and I definitely will do the training measures thank you again
Hi! I have 2 green cheek conures and my pineapple green cheek gets along great family, but my other green cheek will seriously take off at them and try to attack them! When she lands on them she will bit them really hardđą but she gets along with me very well, and doesnât bite or attack me at all! we have tried everything to try and get this to stop! I was wondering if you knew how to get this to stop? đ thank you so much! I love your videos and they are so helpful! đ
i dont own a bird or even a dog but still watching thisđ
Hii so I got a budgie 2 months ago and I can tell he likes me but he still bites me, what should I do?
Will that help me with my two Jack Russells
what was the colorful mashed meal your conures was chowing down on in the video?
