OK - so... here's my suggestion to anyone trying to do multiple things... this has worked for me before, and continues to work for me today:
Step 1: Get a Google Account (i.e. Gmail) - it's free, you probably already have one so go to Step 2
    Step 2: Open Google Calendars
Step 3: Learn how to create multiple calendars
Step 4: Create a calendar for EACH GROUP you want to do stuff with
Step 5: In each Calendar enter all dates, times, and locations (and basic descriptions) for all stuff you want to do
Step 6: Look for conflicts (remember especially to look at two or more events happening on the same day - example: WGI and Senior Recital Rehearsal... you may be in Dayton for one and need to be in NJ for the other)
Step 7: If possible to mitigate or reschedule you can now see what actual times you will not have conflicts and attempt to do so
Step 8: if you cannot reschedule you must prioritize what is important to you and then talk with the conflicting group/party on how you can work with them to come up with a solution
Step 8a: Seriously, have a game plan before you show up... don't just show up and say "I have a problem, I need you to fix it" - that rarely goes well
Step 9: Enjoy your reduced conflict stress life and end up making lots of $$$$ doing what you love
Step 10: share that money with EMC and myself since we both helped you get there... seems fair right?

Definitely save up money before hand. It's really expensive to march. I did my first season of DCI after my Junior year of highschool then ran out of money. I took of last summer and I'll be taking off this summer as well. I am currently marching indoor since it is cheaper I could afford it and hopefully I will be able to keep doing at least indoor but yeah. Save up as much as you can and work as much as you can before you start marching

It's possible, you just have to communicate. If you don't communicate, that's when people start to get angry.
I did marching band, indoor drumline, musicals, plays, dance, and had a job.
My brother did marching band, football, dive team, musical pit, and also had a job.
Both of us did just fine and had a very healthy social life as well as school life. A trick to homework is to not overthink it. That's something I learned way too late in life. Most teachers just want to see that you did it and (in terms of english assignments) that you have an opinion/thoughts. You can do it! Just believe in yourself (that's the hardest part 😉)

I am the same. At uni I trained 6-10 hours a week and competed in archery travelling to matches and competitions, I started piano and got to grade 4, I went to almost every Friday evening rock and roll society event and almost all main parties no matter what uni work I had that week. I also did gym or yoga most days to keep in shape for archery. Now I am a teacher, I do extra courses to boost my CV, I play piano and recorder and have two tiny CZcams channels one for piano songs and one for English lessons and keep up with advanced Italian. Doing a million things is awesome.

I was lucky that my marching band practice was mon, wed, thurs 6pm to 9pm. While my football practice was from after school to 530pm. I never got too play in the half time show, but the band director and drumline coach was ok with that. And then when I did DCA I was in the Army stationed in Maryland. The Bucs was at first not sure about it because every once in while I would miss due to weekend duties. but they were ok with that because they would email me all the changes and I would work on them on the base football field.

I also played varsity football and drumline. took alot of work and I have to sacrifice being lead snare for it but my band director was ok with placing me lead tenor instead. Only difference is football went from after school to 6:30 and band was from 6 to 9:30 so my director wasnt too happy about that but he just got used to it. Perks of going to school in a small town.

I relate to your struggles. I'm a top cross country athlete in my school and in the marching band(drumline). I finish running up to 13 miles a day then carry base 4 around for 3 hours everyday. Thanks to my coaches/ directors for helping me out and letting me skip practices to go to races/competitions. The only way this works is that xc practice ends at 4:30 and band starts at 5, so my sister brings me food to eat in the 30 minutes inbetween practices.

I have the same problem with band and xc. I was lucky to be able to skip some practices for xc meets. It’s about the end of my freshman year and I want to both play trombone for concert and play baritone for marching next year. Not sure how I’m going to do this if I keep doing xc. I might just quit xc and do track since there are hardly any conflicts or keep doing both.

My high school had 3 sports teams Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshmen. For my band I told the varsity coach to put me on JV then play with varsity every other week. This helped with the conflicts. My dumb ass was in choir and band... So I missed 2 games. My team got 2nd in state with 2 losses. Advice is to talk your parents, your directors, and teachers. If you go on trips to festivals either drive or get your parents to drive. Everything works out.

Eric, I really hope you see this because I have no idea what to do. So i am currently a senior in high school and I am on pace to get accepted into either University of Tennessee, or LSU. Both of which I want to do the college marching band. But more importantly, I want to do DCI more than anything in the world. And just today actually I had a meeting with the assistant director who unfortunately reassured me that if I do DCI, not only will I miss the freshman orientation, but I wouldnt get seats, dorm spots, books, and the classes I want. On top of that Id have to go straight from DCI to college with no goodbye. So what am I supposed to do? Im a kid filled with DCI ambition, but I dont wanna be a music major, and im afraid my future is on the line. Any tips?

The worst conflict I had was in high school. There was a robotics (I was the team captain) end-of-year state wide competition and the indoor drumline's (one of only two tenor players) prelims were on the same freakin' day. I did both, because my parents were super cool about driving me from one to the other (didn't have a license then).
Actually, I take that back. Right now (many, many years later) I do both a 'normal' 9 to 5 job, and I plow snow for a different company. In the interview with the 9 to 5 place, I told them "hey, I already agreed to plow again (7th winter) with this company I've been with for years. I can be at work for the 9 to 5 stuffs, unless it snows - will that be a problem? They really wanted me to work there, so they agreed to make it work.

It's a lot easier to do all of the things when you got a solid home life oh, don't have to worry about money food housing calm your family safety or security, etc.
There is survivorship bias in the activity where a lot of people who had success attribute all of that to their work ethic and absolutely none of it too the life they were born into, it creates this sense of everyone being able to do the same. However it's a lot easier to fundraise thousand dollars when you come from a community that has spare income

I had a choir professor who never followed the syllabus and made his students do way more work then they should have been doing. He had required workshops which were just fun and games. What took a weekend to learn could have been learned in an hour by ourselves. I basically constantly conflicted with that prof because I had like seven other classes and three of them also wanted 100% of my time. Solution: Don't choose one, do nothing instead (I'm kidding).
The funny thing is, this prof was likely the most unorganized person I've ever met. When students are more responsible than the prof, there's a problem.

How did it go? Any tips, because I plan on doing dci distant from my college?

@@dalianstopjones3767 covid hit. But even though WGI was a much better experience than DCI overall I wouldn’t do a WGI group 3 hrs away from my college as a music major again. The time conflicts were too much when I should have been focusing on grades and practicing and learning how to college better. This was my freshman year.
It realllllly depends on your professor. Mine did not like WGI so he didn’t encourage or work with it as much. My advice, if marching is important to you, go to a school that values it, or at least understands it.
#1 thing is GO TO AN AUDITION no matter what you do. I cannot stress than enough. If you’re even slightly interested, show up.

@@dalianstopjones3767 I just realized you said DCI not WGI. 100% go for it. DCI is easy with time conflicts. Memorize your packet and know how to play variations of almost everything. And SHOW UP. Get to know the vets and become friends with them and you’ll make it.
      I hope his helps
